Very fruitful trip to the plant sale
It looks like really frilly...it is definately not frilly dealy..so it must be mislabeled. i don't think it is really frilly either since the flower looks purple
Did you still want a baby from it? I also have some of buckeye fiesta if you want one
I'll still try a baby of Frilly who-ever-it-is and I'll pass on the Buckeye since I have an order coming from Pat Hancock with a lot of buckeye's (they get so big and I want space for the green edged gals) but hug hug thank you for offering. I know someone here would like it.
Lorry I would like any Frilly you have :)) Green is even better please :))
I have Ramblin' Midget Vintage variegated trailer by Champion pretty hard to get and Electric Cowboy, and anything else you'd like to trade :))
Ok Laurie..one frilly for you :) Frilly unkown LOL
and one frilly for Allison..Frilly unknown :)
I would LOVE ramblin midget and electric cowboy though you dont' need to worry about trades lady :) anything I have is yours for the asking..You should know that :) Which of my russians don't you have? I can also send you leaves of those!
I will save those two plants for you and more Lorry !
Thanks :))
Lorry, what a *haul*!!! lol!!
I'm in love with the coloring on that 'trailing bromeliad'!!
I think your 'spikey' cryptanthus is actually a Dyckia, but I could be wrong.
The firefern is Oxalis hedysaroides 'rubra'...I've never tried it in a terrarium, but I hate to say I don't think it would do well in one.
It needs a lot of sun.
Your other pretty fern looks like one of the Selaginella to me (does that really have 'reddish' undersides as it appears in the photo?)
The plant with the nice orange coloring is Chlorophytum 'fireflash'....it's being called a few other names, as well, but it is, indeed a Chlorphytum (relative of the ordinary spider plant!) and it's gorgeous!!
lol!! I'd like to go plant-shopping with you, too!!
Nope it is a cryptanthus, a new species of them actually.
I don't have any Dycka (too nasty on the hands) So I prefer the kinder, gentlers cryptanthus.
Thanks for the info on the fern. The lady said it would but then again they are not always reliable..perhaps I should put it in my yard instead then. I do have two halogen lamps on my 20 gallon long terrarium. Should that be ebough light for it you think?
And yup the ferns underside is a deep burgundy red color :) it is a real stunner. The fern actually feels like silk!
Firflash..YES! That is it! Thanks so much :) I love it..I had never seen anything quite like it before but the lady said it likes to be wet and in shade So I bought it for the expensive price of 1.00 to put with my philodendrons :)
Well Lieu has this sale each year :) So all of ya mark your calendar to be in FL at that time and we can all go together next year!
nan, I thought it was a Dykia too, but I only have a few so I don't know much about them.
Lorry, the fireflash is called 'GreenOrange' (TM) here on the west coast, I pulled a tag at home depot yesterday for you. now I have lost it. But how NON creative is the name 'GREEN ORANGE' c'mon cant they do better than that?
LOL..they called it fireflash and Leiu gardens :) and I agree..how unoriginal is green orange :) It is a very pretty plant though :) I love it..and now that you guys told me what it is..I can figure out how to propogate it :) thanks so much!
Lorry
Wow! I'd have sworn it to be a Dyckia, but then again one must never assume, right?!
It's amazing sometimes the new varieties that are introduced to the plant market.....that's one *funky-cool* Cryptanthus.
I had a few of them in the past, but your 'enabling' me to start a collection again with all your great photos!!
Here you go....Selaginella erythropus....definitely suited to growing in your terrarium.
I have a C. 'Fireflash' too.....the moment I saw one I *had to have it*, dontcha know, lol!!
I'm not sure I agree with keeping it wet, though....but I suppose that will depend on the growing conditions.
I could be wrong about the Oxalis, Lorry....I do know they demand bright light to flower, and they enjoy the 'fresh air', (mine doesn't do too well indoors during the winter) so maybe you could try it in the terrarium.
I guess you can always do a search on it and see what the most commonly listed cultural requirements are.
You really got some beauties, there....I'm envious!!
Lorry,
You got some real beauties! Congrats.
Sharon
Well Nan I would not have known what it was if it was not for the guy at the bromeliad society :) He said they are a species that has just recently been recognized! It has some pups starting and you are welcome to one if you would like. I can just add it to you wishlist.
They are not hard and nasty as the dycka :) they did have Dyckas though at a really good price :) But those aren't my thing :)
Oh wow..thanks for coming up with a name! I LOVE this fern and figured a fern would do well in the terrarium :) I am going to split it to share with April too :)
So you don't keep yours wet? She said they like ALOT of water..but I would rather go with your experience :) I agree about having to have it! I seen someone pick it up and I was in love. When I found out it was one dollar I was further smitten LOL
Nan..if I have anything you would like some of..please let me know :) Most of them are large enough to split up :)
No, Lorry...I keep my C. Fireflash quite dry.....*but*.....mine has some pretty limited light during the winter indoors in WI.....so that could make a difference.
Yours would most likely get a lot more warmth and light than mine.
Are you growing yours indoors or outdoors?
Yea, Dyckias do *bite*, don't they? lol!!
I once had 3 or 4 of them (they're among the plants lost when my son was ill) and one had the most beautiful pinkish/greenish cast to it.
I *am* becoming 'smitten' with Cryptanthus...but I hope I didn't imply that I expect you to 'gift' me with some.
I'd better go slow! (They do really well for me outdoors in the summertime....not so hot during the winter!) Besides....we've gotta build on *your* wishlist!
I plan to send you part of that Aeschynanthus when the weather warms up again and will be on the look-out for others, as you'd said you don't have any (yet!).
Hey, does the photo above show all the Cryptanthus you have?
If so....you might *need* the one I have (if I can get it to survive 'til trading time, lol!) as I don't see one that looks quite like it in your photos!
I'll try to get a photo of it for you in the near future....I've been working on getting a better camera and I might have it this week!
Simply Goluptious, Lorry.
I am glad we can count on you to post pictures when your project is planted. How big is it, since you have a decent number of plants for it?
Kenton
Catching up here... Lorry, I would love 'Buckeye Fiesta', and a spare leaf or two would be great!
I know I haven't been keeping up here as well lately... and that'll only get worse as my garden distractions increase with the warmer weather, LOL!
Nan
It is outside (sort of) it is in my FLorida room by my philodendrons....So it gets some light but is covered.
Sorry to hear your son was ill :(
They had some Dyckas at the plant sale ..I almost bought some until I felt them (ouch!) I may end up with some at some point though but my cryptanthus won out!
Actually Nan..I do have LOTS of babies off my red cryptanthus (the middle one) So it is really NO trouble if you want one :) I didn't think you were implying you wanted me to gift you one :) But I don't mind sending you one. I would be over run with babies if I didn't share them :)
As far as growing inside..I don't know..Mine live in the FL room year round and seem to do quite well there..>They are a bromeliad and Laurie says that she has problems with bromeliads inside..perhaps a humidity tray will help? They don't need a huge amount of light and actually burn in full light or so that is my experience.
Nope I don't have Aeschynanthus and would LOVE some :)
and no..I have a few others not in the photo. I have a green and white tiny one..a pink and green tiny one,,a multicolor green, another redish one and the spikey one in these photos which I picked up the last time :)
I am always on the look out for new cryptanthus but you keep yours :) LOL...If it ever pups..keep me in mind :)
Kenton..it is a 20 gallon long which is about the length of a 30 gallon tank.
I also bought a really cool terrarium off of ebay for any stragglers :) who won't fit into this one :) and I may buy a second one from the guy on ebay :)
If you seen anything in here (the bamboo grass, fern or whatever) that interests ya..let me know as I should have plenty to share..
Critter..I can do you one better then that..>I got two suckers off of fiesta and I will put your name on the really nice rooted one :) and not to worry :) I have been only popping in at work LOL..I have beebn repotting and reorganizing everyone :) SO also short on time as my housekeeping as of late will attest to :)
Woohooo! Thanks, Lorry!
I have to find some time this week to go through the plantlets I've been up-potting and match them with the wish lists I have from y'all... I know there are plenty of plants that haven't been bespoken, but I don't know which ones! I've got a few newer leaf pots popping up ears now too, so I'll have fall trade AVs also! :-)
Me too we shall have a large Fall trade to help us threw the Winter.
Lorry, those 'Lipstick' noid I sent you are Aeschynanthus, I sent like three different kinds, can't recall. Did they all croak? If so, I'll root some for you again. LMK.
Critter are you warming up enough for me to send some goodies? I have a nice scented geranium that hopped into my cart about a month ago. Been giving it steroids so it's nice and plump when I send it. var. is called 'Peacock' (oak leaf looking with burgundy center & veins) I'll post a photo later. If you have it, let me know.
Sorry to say Lil Rich Girl leaf croaked (boo hoo) wish I had that one for you. And I think you wanted Blushing Bride wandering Jew?
Oh I didn't know that is what lipstick plant is (LOL) Then I guess I do have some :) I thought they were nemtanthus! Silly me..I need to reread the non AV descriptions :)
LOL and nope none of them croaked (at least not yet)
We all learn somethin' new every day, don't we?! lol~~
I can still send you a division of this Aeschynanthus....if you already have one it'll just make your pot-full *bigger*!!
It sounds like your C. 'Fireflash' is in a good location....now that you mention 'Philos'....mine is in growing conditions similar to those of my Philos.
I'm sure you'll do well with it.
If your Fla room is quite warm, then 'moist' might be OK...but I'm just not sure about 'wet'
IMHO it's easier to give it less at first, because you can always give it 'more' water but you can't reverse root-rot.
My Cryptanthus is yellow and green striped and blushes a nice rosey pink....and I *think* it has pups but they've no roots, of course.
If you have an 'overabundance' of the red one, I'd love to trade, then!
Ok I dont' have that one :)
On the roots of the cryptanthus no worries..Just pull the pups and send out like that..this is what I do and they do just fine :) It takes a long time to root but they can live away from mom long enough to ship :)
I agree about less and move up :) that is usually what I do when I am told they like to be wet :) since wet is a relative term :)
And yup over abundance is the word for it LOL......It has been pupping like crazy! So I would LOVE to trade :)
Sounds good! We'll keep in touch, then...spring's coming!
We're expecting another warm spell beginning this weekend, but I've got so much going on this weekend that I can't even begin to think about trading!
Should be getting a new camera within the next few days....if so I'll take a photo of both of those for you.
Pictures !
Lali, it's getting warmer here, but we won't be past average last frost date until late April... and anything coming from CA will have to fly over the Rocky Mtns... It's hard for me to be patient, LOL, but I don't want to risk frostbitten plants.
Oh WOW... You have a Peacock Geranium!! That's an absolutely gorgeous one! I think it's rose scented, too.... yummmmmm! Can you tell I'm quite excited about it?? I'm afraid it doesn't look good for my 'Lime' SG... am trying to salvage one remaining shoot... but I should have some others, and I may be able to pick up a Lime one if/when I head down to DeBaggio's this spring.
Nan... looking forward to seeing photos when you get that New Camera! What fun!
Lorry how long does it take for the little cryptanthus to have some Pups ? I just love my little adorable colorful pup you sent me :))
I honestly dont' know how long it takes them to pup. I am sure it is a while though since they need to be mature. The only one I have now that has pupped is the red one I sent you :)
I have a couple of my varieties in a mixed garden of them..if any of the others ever pup..I will send you more of them :)
Seems I have extra Selaginella ..I know April wants some..Did you also Nan? You seemed to like the red undersides :)
Actually, Critter, I have peacock just for you. I was at our garden center and they sell for like $2 so I got this one. they have lots of others, but this one stood out as a beauty among the scented. I can get tons more when the threat of frost is gone. I like to mix them in my big containers for added ooomph where foliage is concerned.
Another that I love and I cant think of the name is the thread leaf one. It's a beauty, do you have it?
Oh what is plectranthus? Me likes! Can it live outside here? in terrariums? how big does it get? LOL give me the skinny girl :")
Cryptanthus are bromeliads Jesse :) so either answer is right but that is a cryptanthus :)
They are very pretty too!!!!!!!
These are true ground dwellers though...unlike many bromeliads
Oh my, I'll introduce you to the world of plectranthus. !!
The one you see above is common 'creeping charlie' but I have many others. Here's a shot from when I did plant trades last year.
I have some that are real beauties. I keep mine in the house or greenhouse during the winter. It's not frost hardy. Propagates like mint, (same family) and smells wonderfully medicinal.
Allison has a beauty in front of her house. Hers is green with creamy white margins. I have lots to share.
One p. purpuratus is enormous. it blooms so beautifully!
Oh they are really pretty! Creeping charlie I have heard of but many of the others I didn't :)
I would not complain if some of them made it into my next box (wink) If there is some to spare!
consider it done!
Awesome :) thanks!
