We are being very patient, waiting for Spring to roll around.
Just killing time when can we plant?
Love your snow people! I never plant before May 15. What zone are you?
I'm in zone 7 and can't plant anything that likes a lot of sun until May either. But cool weather "stuff" I like to plant early because when it gets hot here it happens fast and lettuces go to seed.
Neat snowmen! (Sorry, traditional name.) I've learned not to put tomatoes and peppers out before the middle of May too. You wouldn't believe how cold Memorial Day can be!!! I'm in zone 5a.
Billy,
Reminds me of last year-spring in our area. A couple nice warm weeks in March and April- people were planting annuals and vegetables like crazy. I tried to caution so many of my friends, but nooooo. They just knew spring was here to stay.
Of course the garden centers loved it-they got to sell all those tender annuals and veggie plants twice! Remember the freeze in early May? The last frost date in our zone (5) is supposed to be April 20, but seems to me it's 2-3 weeks later in last few years.
Our forefathers general rules for planting times just don't seem to apply anymore. It seems to me that the seasons are gradually shifting. I don't think the planting guides on the back of seed packets have kept up with the times, but that is just my own opinion. Anyone else notice the "shift'?

Yep, I think so too. Killing frost May 3rd & 4th. Most of the tree leaves grew back, but not the blossoms. I was really worried about my new grapes, second year for them, but we even got a few bunches. They didn't get bee stung or pecked much either. I'm putting in two more Concords this spring, and replacing the pear tree that didn't make it. I haven't cleaned off any beds yet either. With age comes wisdom!
It's so hard to wait when we get a warm April. I try to do heavy things like bricks and compost turning while it is still cool.
I just came in from planting my peas and beets. I'll wait until mid to late May to plant most of my other veggies. Zone 5b but we've gotten late frosts in the past. Twiddling my thumbs!

I don't dare turn my compost till the toads dig out. I've forked them before and felt so bad. My pile is hand scoop only in the spring.
Billy,
Bless you for not intentionally harming the little toads! I love having them around, and have a real "soft spot" for them.
I rarely see them in the city. On the farm, they were plentiful-seems so long ago. Who am I kidding?! It was ages ago! Ha.
Deanna
We don't have as many as we used to. This spring I'll settle the top of a birdbath in the ground for them, and the little birds, to bathe in. (We don't have too many feral cats any more so the little birds are safe.)
Jacquie./..that is too cute...
I have been trying to get in touch with you to get your snail mail address...please send it to me so I can send the seed I promised...Jo
Deanna,
My son was born April 11,and we were driving from Davenport to Iowa City in a blizzard. It sure wasn't California!
But I did love the winters there, I'd go out walking at night when the snow was falling and no one else was out, so peaceful. And I miss the lilacs and peonies, I hope you have those...
Sherry
