Shoot; or should I say toot. Tube steak and beans for dinner. Tomorrow I'll turn over a new leaf, I promise.

Well everybody knew it was methane... or was I the only one?

You're a stones throw from the Mississippi? Send me a note in a bottle. I live on the Great River Road in Louisiana.
I am not sure spring is early here because we did not have much of a winter. The river birches are already leafing and the crepe myrtles are already in full leaf. However, the true harbingers of spring, the pecan trees, are still snoozing heavily.
We will have coat weather for the next few days which is fine with me. Warmer weather means that awful humidity and the dreaded HURRICANES.

Hi liveoaklady,

Nice to meet you. Around here I measure the last frost when the Quercus palustris begin leafing. Yesterday evening it snowed about 1/4" and most melted by the end of today.

Again, nice to meet you. And the weather, well I hope it's a showy Spring!

Take care,

Hey Liveoaklady I just got back from alaska. I was on Kodiak Island and the wind blew steady for 3 days between 75mph and topped at 110+. No body said a thing on the news. Trailors blew over my truck almost tipped over and all the eagles blew 200 miles down wind. waves were swelling over 30' and the windward part of the island was pounded. Not news in Alaska.

I have some oaks, maples, and Osage oranges that have fully leafed out. The temp is supposed to get down to 33 degrees, should I cover them? How cold does it have to get to damage the foliage?

Illinois, IL(Zone 5b)

33 should be OK unless you have them in a frost pocket. If they are in a propagation area, an oscillating fan can keep the frost from settling, or setting out a lawn sprinkler over them will protect them.

We were down in the teens last night, but most of our stuff is still pretty dormant. Those early species that have broken buds (like Ribes and Prinsepia) and the early bloomers (like Cornus officinalis) are used to this stuff.

Dropped to 15F last night. 6-8" of snow. Ugly. Now it's 45F, and much of the snow is already gone.

I saw a few Silver Maples in bloom while walking the doggies this morning....
