Does anyone here have a pre existing health condition and yet they've been able to locate affordable (say under $200/mo family) health coverage? I may have two potential job offers but neither offer health coverage. I am currently under my hubby's insurance, but if he were to lose his job we wouldn't be able to fall back on my employers coverage, because there wouldn't be any! Is it possible to get (affordable) coverage if you have a pre-existing condition? Thanks for any and all help!

Private health ins & pre-existing condition - Help pls!
Most likely, COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) insurance would be available to you and your husband should he lose his job and the company still maintains an insurance program for their employees. However, the coverage (which is the same as your current coverage) would only be available for a set period of time - like 18 months. The premium will be the same plus a small administrative charge (2%).
Based on my knowledge and experience, it would be very difficult or impossible to find medical coverage (family) for under $200 per month in the open market. Certain states have insurance programs (Wisconsin does) that protect the individual should they not be able to get insurance anywhere because of a pre-existing health condition. Even then, you would pay a lot more than $200 per month. You can keep the monthly premium down if you are willing to accept a higher deductible.

My parents are having this same problem, Seedsower. Dad is self-employed and Mom has diabetes. The only affordable option they have come up with so far is for Mom to go back to college. The student insurance is very reasonable and will cover pre-existing conditions. Mom wasn't too thrilled about going back to college at age 62, though! She did it last year, but isn't going now, so they are back to paying full price for her health care right now. :-/
Please let me know if you find out anything useful!

Sandy, it's been a while since I looked at this thread, but in addition to the very knowledgeable people who have answered you here, there may be some more in this one: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/576010/
Marilyn one of the reasons I put off going back to school myself was cost of insurance, etc. - had no idea the two could be combined - thank you.
Will be very interested to see what y'all come up with here, too.
