I'm so excited one of my Russian plants grown by leaf blooms

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Last year I had ordered some Russian leaves from Bluebird greenhouse ! One I order and really wanted ( Had green in the flower) they were out of :( So instead of a credit I asked them to send me any other Russian leaf. At the time this one was not selling on their web sight.

Never did I know how pretty it would flower ! Ek-Snezhnyi Bars (Elena Korshunova)
"Snow Leopard" progate with grace and the leaf gave me two beautiful plants and sense then many suckers :)) I had dumped the plant a few times messy. And it needed transplanting . I was out of 3 inch pots so it's in a 4 inch doing terrific ! It's full of large buds. Gosh I wish they could all open at one time.
The bud is large and I could see what apeared to look like Strips !
Well last night it opened and I saw it and was WOW ! It has Stripes. I could not beleive how Simple, plain and bursting with beauty .
I woke up this morning to go see if it was still there. lol You never know it could open up wide and the Stripes would be gone . Well there are Stripes now and I am so excited !
I'll be taking pictures when the Sun comes up better for taking good pictures !
You can see pictures on the AVSA russian pictures. and also here ;

It is one of the most beautiful AVs I have seen.

Did you send Libby a photo?

Do you think it is a chimera?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I just sent Libbie a picture ! I'll tell you what looks more like some of the Chimeras in FC :)) Now to see what the other blooms look like. Will it be stable ? I have a few suckers down of it already !

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Oh wow Allison that is a beauty. I can see why you fell in love with it. I followed directions in stickys and other posts and repotted my 3 noid av's and they are happy and I see little blooms trying to come on one. Keeping everything crossed for blooms...Lauri

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Thanks Laurie ! Hope you get lots of bloom too :))

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

WOW! That is absolutely gorgeous... even better than the way it "should" bloom, which is also stunning!

I got a first bloom on 'Rebel's Splatter Kake' today.... will try to get a photo later! It's also WOW! :-)

Congratulations, Allison!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

THanks Ki;; ! I would have loved it the other way too but surprises are fun ! I could see stripes in the but but you never know. It jas a lot of buds can't wait until the other ones open ! Hope their all the same.' Can;t wait to see your 'Rebel's Splatter Kake'

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

oohhh, lovely!!
It would be lovely if they all opened at the same time, but then there would be nothing to look forward to in the near future!

I'm interested, too, to see if they're all the same.....keep clickin' that camera! lol!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I know Nan wish they all open together. Most plants they last a long time so though they open separate soon you have a whole bouquet full ! I can't wait for the others to opem ! I'll be clicking !

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

I only have two russian plants. I would email her and ask first if she has enough for the special that you don't already have :)
You have quite a collection of the Russians :)
Once mine come in ..I will let you know what she sent....and if you want leaves from them..of course they are yours :)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Lorry I counted they have 15 plants I don't have ! I ordered two Russian Monday I think as I did not know about the special. She says they have already been shipped out. I'll probaly get them vt Thursday. I order an Ann African violet plant to give to my Mom. Iy's hard to progate.
And I ordered a trailer, Amandie Trail . Not in FC . She said it's very small but will grow out.

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh Allison, you must be so proud! That is a beautiful flower.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Thank You April ! Now I grew it by leaf and if it's sporting Chimera iwould be like WOW :))
I was holding my breath if it would still be here in the morning. Now i Now I have to wait for the others to open !

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

OK....Ms. "I collect plants and have a whole lot of them but very few AV's and need to learn more about them" (ME!) needs to know what your AV-ese means.....please explain 'Sporting Chimera'?!! Ü

TIA!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

See the "sticky" thread at the top of the forum for explanations of Sports & Chimeras.... so many good links in that thread, and lots of "AV-ese" too!

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Oh....duh....(!?) I always forget about the 'Sticky Threads', even though they're right there on top each and every time!

Thanks, I'll check that out!

Drumheller, AB(Zone 2a)

Allison...I am really partial to purple and I love them both! Beautiful photos!

TFS!

Joanne

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Thanks Joanne I love the way it should be blooming but I like the Stripes best. The other blooms like my Mom said you can see the stripes. If so I will try to progate to thire generation:)) It will take a long time but if I can do it will be worth it.
I left lot's of links about Chimeras in other thread .

Chimeras are Sports, Mutations.
What's a chimera? According to Webster's dictionary, a "chimera" is a "living structure or organism in which the tissues are of varied genetic origin". What does this mean? Unlike other violets which, when propagated by leaf cuttings, will typically produce plantlets ("babies"), identical in appearance to the "mother" plant, this cannot be done with chimeras (the babies will look different than the mother plant). Why? because the tissues are of "different genetic origin" for each leaf, or plant part.

http://www.robsviolet.com/standard_chimeras1.htm
And I have always dreamed of having one show up on my plant stand :)) Although they say if you get enough Fantasy flowering plants someday you'll get a fantasy ! Also for every hundred leaves you put down one will Sport. That's a lot.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

All this makes Chimeras cost more . They can take a long time to progate. Lot's of them are rare.
