Hi everyone....Just got back from the city (Saginaw, Bay City)....had lunch today with Dori (notmartha and Pat (tootsie). Dori took us to this Hortmark place in Munger, just southeast of Bay City where we all bought potting soil in bags...Got a great deal.....tootise bought a garden statuary, a donkey, but that's not what she called it....we had a great day today.....weather was perfect, low 60's....tomorrow its gonna get colder again....Yikes...will spring ever get here....
Here is a picture I took at the restaurant of Pat and Dori
Deann
Lets yak part 2
Raining like crazy here, it's supposed to turn cold again ugggggg!
Paul
Raining here,also.
Did get 8 more flats started in the greenhouse, yesterday. That makes 22 all together.
I`m going to get caught up on house work ,today.
I also have a full sun flowerbed to plot out . It is about 130 ft long and 8 ft wide. Hubby has a bunch of saws to sharpen, so he will be in the garage most of the day.
Everyone have a Great Day!!!! Aleta
Morning all!
Rainning here and puddles everywhere, they said we could get 1-3in of snow-But then next week in the 60s.
Honestly there was NO beverages consumed at lunch but water and Ice tea-we just look like 2 drunks! lol It was a very fun day and I spent less than I had planned, more money towards the co-ops!!
I got my orders from eflowergarden and touch of nature yesterday too. When i got home i mixed the soilless mix with some garden soil and got them all potted and in the GH. Most of the Hosta's had leaves already and since i dont even see an eye in the hosta bed, figured Id better keep them safe n warm for another week or so.
aleta you sound busy too! ya its a house day(weekend)for sure -we got narnia movie to watch this weekend.
well my FIl is here to visit and i have to get busy soon-so cyaz later
hugz
dori
Hubby said LET`S GO FOR A RIDE.!!!! Went to Bay City ,it was snowing there. Did a little window shopping. left there went to Linwood Corners and as we got closer to Omer it got brighter and partly sunny, the closer we go to home the brighter it got. It`s 42 out and sunny right now. Oh well it was a nice ride. Aleta
we have about 1 inch right now-but im not looking out the windows anymore!!
my sis in alabama is buckling down for tornados tonight!
some time you will have to stop by!
linwood corners-yummy
dull, dreary, cold here, BUT will be close to 70 deg by next week (so they say)
Has this been a long winter or what??? I'm really in a funk with all this crappo weather...
sue i know what you mean-told dh even with my cold i feel 100% better being outside than sitting in the house-it seems to give me more energy. am i crazy? I just feel so much better when the sun is out and its warm(50ish even)
i looked out and the snow has melted back i can see grass again-happy day!
going to put narnia in and watch it-kids said its good!
Today rain and mild-yesterday high 71 wasnt that a wonderful day!!! I have blisters from tilling all day-3daylily beds and 2 iris beds and some areas in the big garden. Potted up some more plants in the GH-really need to do lots more the rest of the week!
But man am I sore everywhere-the backs of my legs OH MY bending over pulling the old daylily fans off before tilling-why do i have so many daylilies-and still buying more!
I lost about 10 to crown rot-grrrrrrr, going to stay away from them evergreen types and stay with dormants for the most part-no matter how beautiful they are.
I have hyacinths and crocus blooming and green foliage everywhere-it truly is spring.
The grass is turning green and will need mowed in a few weeks-get those blades sharpened and mowers ready. I see growth on most of the roses too
Today-clean the house, get seed trades and plant trade in the mail.
keeping track of the co-op Im running and snailmail robin. That should keep me busy.
Hope everyone is doing good in your neck of the woods.
Rain here too - good thing as my fingers are swollen from weeding and man oh man the backs of my legs are screaming!! I put some 10-10-10- down in the flower beds, so that should give them a good start.
My hellebores are in glorious bloom! Hope they seed and spread! Mine are all pink tho - wish I had some other colors. Daffys are blooming and grape hyacinths are about to bust open.
My favorite two greenhouses have grand openings this weekend - 10% off too and wouldn't you know it - it is DGS first soccer game and DIL invited us to an early Easter dinner on Sat. Guess what is gonna win out?? Yup - I'm going to the garden centers, skipping soccer, and then showing up late for dinner. LOL
I'm still potting up things...need to get into the dirt.
Had rain this morning, then sun came out for a few hours. It is getting ready to rain now.
Like everyone else been working outside. It got up to 74 here yesterday. Hubby got my front flowerbed worked up yesterday. We have ordered 2 loads of topsoil, so will get them when the road restrictions go off. Have to take big truck to dads and get some horse manure(13 years old) to mix with it . It is so old it looks like muck.
I sure do have Spring Fever. Well, beter get back to house work . Cliff`s son and family are coming for the weekend. They say 55 tomorrow and partly cloudy, but no rain so more yard work will get done.Yepee.......Aleta
I did get out yesterday it was the nicest day we had fish are even starting to come up in the pond but still groggy and don't want to eat much yet.
Crown rot is discouraging I think its wet springs that do it. I have a couple that got crown rot already I mix a 20% solution of bleach water and douce them with it. Skinwalker got it this year I had 5-6 fans and I'll be lucky to save a couple I think.
Finally have some bloom here too. Crocus and daffodils I'm soo glad I was really getting the winter blues here. The daylilies are only up a few inches here but I watch them daily no signs of hosta or many others yet but at least I know its coming. The Iris multiplied like crazy here this year some went from 1-6 couldn't believe it. Did pull a few weeds but today is stormy and no chance to get out just hoping the weekend is nice I'm in real need of some therapy here lol.
Kim
Hello all,
I'm fairly new to all of this so probably made alot of mistakes but here goes.
I put bulb fert around all my budding bulbs a couple of weeks ago, as well as slow release fert, in all the other beds.
I loosened the leaf mulch a bit- just to make sure it wasnt matted, and the fert, water, and air could get to the soil.
I trimmed my roses (brand new last year) that amazingly had very little winter damage, and sprinkled rose food and bonemeal around them and scratched it in a bit- ground was still a little hard then, even though there were leaf buds on the roses-albeit very small.
I put that little wire fencing around beds to discourage the dogs from trotting thru- i caught my 125 lb yellow lab- Sandy- sat on the hyacinth sprouts and later on the sedums. All the empty spaces in the beds and she always manages to sit on the few plants!!! LOL
We went to Lowes and i picked up some Pearlwort, i think its called. OMG the color of it practically screamed at me to buy it!!! And a 7' Crabapple 'Dolgo' for $10!!! I looked it up- Its a messy one but the birds will love it.
Also fushia's for the hanging post. And a lovely Jap. Painted fern. (Dont you just love ferns?)
I am so inspired by pictures of the Mountain Contemplation Garden at Foxfire Gardens!!!! I MUST find out what type of stone they used! I am going to put a garden like this in here!
The pic is 2 over and 5 down. Here's the link:

Anyway have a GREAT day!! And any feedback on what i'm doing wrong is greatly appreciated!
Ness ;-)
HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE!!!
What a beautiful day here . Started out cloudy , but got sunny in the afternoon. It is 77 out right now.
I have been out side all afternoon.Cliff`s son and family will be here about 7 or so for the weekend.
Going to cook a big ham tomorrow. They will have to leave Sunday morning to go home.
Ness, I know all to well about a dog and flower beds. MisTee thinks they were made just for her. I can`t wait to see what she does when we get a pond. She already finds every ditch and mud puddle and dives right in. The good thing is she loves the tub when it is bath time. She is a lab and retreiver mix???? A pound puppy . She was 6 weeks old and walked in the door and said this is my home, and has been boss ever since.LOL .....Aleta
OUTSIDE its beautiful today!!!!!!!!!!!
ENJOY!
Wow its the middle of April already-i sure hope the summer months slow down! I have been busy with family and gardens this weekend. The boys go back to school tomorrow and i can play cleanup catchup!!!
I moved all my daylily babies and tomato babies to the GH-i have one more kind of tomato to plant and have recieved several kinds of dl seeds in the mail-OH and some coral bells(heuchera)that im going to try to grow.
I have watermelons sprouted and one lemon cuke and even a canna popped up
tonight we will plant the second row of peas as the first row is an inch high now. luv them peas!!!!
I have tilled more of the garden but dont want to get to carried away-thats how I lose stuff in the spring-Oh ya there were lilies there OOOOPSZ! I need to get out and take some more spring pics.
I have tons of Holly Hocks(mixed) lambsear, yarrows, anthemis, and ditchdaylilies to get out of areas in the garden-so if you want any of these-give me a YELL and i will save them
hope everyone got to enjoy a great weekend and this coming week should be a above normal week-may we keep this pattern all summer!!!!!!!!!!!! i luv it HOT HOT HOT!
Just got a shipment of daylilies!!!! YAHOOOOOOOOOOO~

53 and sunny here in Glennie!!
Had 100% germination from Totally Tomatoes seeds, again this year. I will transplant them to their own little pots this week. . We are still working on new garden plot and the new flower bed.
Boy ,I sure wish I didn`t ache so much ,but this is part of having Fribro. I have a shelf full of pain meds I can`t take. Oh well ,the sunshine will make me feel better. Everyone enjoy this sunshine ,suppose to rain after wednesday. Aleta
sunny and a balmy 51 and im heading back to the GH to transplant more tomatoes -great germination here too, and i still have one more purple kind to plant! lol 28kinds of tomatoes am i silly!! DONT answer that!!!
I hope your days are all full of sunshine and FUN
dori
Sunny but chilly here with a wind that just won't stop. But it is toasty in the greenhouse! I didn't start any tomatoes- there's always next year!! I did do peppers for the firs time- I am mainly a 'flower' girl!
Have some moonflower seeds soaking - never had any luck with these= but I keep trying!! Also some heavenly blue MG - they are such a show stopper here.
Need to rake off the leaf debrie on the strawberries - I see their heads peeking out. Alas, I have so many weeds in the strawberries. I probably should just rototill them all under and start over, but don't have the oomph!!
Time to get my butt in gear!!
The apricot trees are blooming too!!! i sure hope we dont have any heavy frost/freeze (tonight will be cold 37 but not to worry) may have yummies this yr :)
Sunny and 6l. Beautiful. I just come in, have been moving some daylilies to make room for the ones I have coming.
Not too windy either, a perfect day.
Would be fairly nice here if the wind would quit blowing hoping it will warm up a bit. I am also digging and moving daylilies here and working on some trades . Most of my orders come in the end of the month so something has to go. I did get an order of foxtail lilies, ot lilies and asiatics I'm working on planting and did get most of the pond wed out. I think the weeds grew all winter I've got some with very long roots they are so agravating.
I love apricots and apricot jam Yummmmm
How i wish i had a green house Hopefully by fall but have to wait hubby just bought me a trike which thrilled me so have to be good for a bit.
Kim
We had 72 today!!!
What a beautiful day. We got more yard work done.
Going to Saginaw tomorrow. I need an outfit for my youngest son`s college graduation. Then he will be moving to Miami to be with his wife. She has a job there, after spending 2 years in Irac, she will enjoy being with her husband and 2 dogs. Aleta
beautiful weather so far this week-the first row of peas are over a inch high now and the second row was planted last night
Mowed the lawn for the first time this yr. Tilled a small bed on the south side of the GH for some tomatoes and daylily seedlings.
Got two shippments of daylilies yesterday and will be planting them today. The ground is still a tad wet for tilling but i did till some areas-hope they arent to clumpy all yr!
transplanted all the tomatoes to bigger pots-they are looking good and the hostas i got from eflowergarden are getting so BIG already! they will be flowering before i get them in the ground LOL
I have some stuff i transplanted from the garden to the gh and they are growing great too-even have flowers on the purple Lamiums.
since chat is down Im going to head to the gardens early.
have wonderful dayz where ever you are,
dori
missing the peeps that arent posting!!!!!!!
I tried posting yesterday, but my posts went to never never land.
I hope they that live there understand them. LOL.
I am finally gettting up and back on my feeties. I have been so
sick with the pneumonia, and now I have gotten sick with a cold
again on top of all that. I am coughing, and tired. But, I am still
outside when I can, planting....
dori- I promised you a rose...garden! LOLOL I dug up the Reunion HT
today, and transplanted it to a light bed so I can dig it up again for you.
and, keep it watered and everything till I get it to you. It will probably
bloom before you get it. Huge honkin perfect looking dark red one to
a tip, longest lasting in the garden, repeat disgustingly, fragrant and
glossy dark green leafed nice big thorned, rose.
I replaced my cl golden showers and this time dug it in down by the
mailbox and will train it up a post and then onto an old umbrella, .
Our mailbox is about a 1/4 mile down our driveway, so I won't really
have to look at it or deal with it in my rose garden or landscaping. But,
I do love the golden showers, and thats that. Just not in my backyard. LOL.
I got two Hananechloa (everytime I try to say that I think of PeeWee Herman
doing the "honi honi maca loa" type chant) and WOW, were they EXPENSIVE.
I nearly died. Blew my budget. forest farms finest. two tiny miniscule pieces of
grass in one inch pots for $35.00. $18.00 alone for the shipping of these
two little weeners. It took longer for me to unpack them then it took to grew
them.
I am still looking for a rose nursery that won't cost a zillion dollars and then
add a zillion dollars of shipping onto it. DH asked me what I wanted for
mothers day, and I would like some climbing roses. I had better hurry up then!
I would like a cl Eden and a Zepherine Drouhin.
Does everyone here know we got 2 (TWO) chickens? we did have 3, but one
ran away. so we have mr and mrs. Bucker. She has laid 14 eggs in a pile thus
far. But, she is not sitting on them. God help us if any of them break! PEEE-YUUUU.
It looks like it *might* rain. which we need. got my fingers crossed, and
my eyes also!
Regards to everyone
sheri
We had a little rain last night. Need more. It is sunny and 60 right now.
I am going to spend time in the yard today. If it does rain I will be in the greenhouse transplanting my tomatoe and pepper plants
Boy went to Saginaw and gas was 2.89 here and it got higher on the way down. 2.95 in Standish and below. got home and it was up to 2.99. They say maybe 4.00 this summer.Boy, our tourist towns may suffer this summer. I also heard the shop in Tawas where I used to work is talking about closing its door . It has been there for over 50 years. If the rumor is true 65 people will be out of work . Not Good!!!!!! So say a prayer that it doesn`t.
Have a GREAT DAY!!!!! Aleta
Spent most of the day getting crazy on the hosta co-op! MAN, is that ever addictive!
This whole site is addictive! I seriously need rehab.
Vanessa ;-))
AFDolly: I will say a prayer. I love it up there in Glennie. I used to have a parcel of land btwn Glennie and Curran. We went camping there all the time. Gosh, I cant remember the name of the assoc. or whatever it was called now. This is going to drive me crazy all night, i just know it! 5 Lakes?? no, maybe..DARN!!!
LOL anyway, Have a good one!
Vanessa
Vanessa, I think you may be thinking of Lakes of the Green.
Got to 77 here today. I did get some flowers transfered from one bed to the other.Load limits are off,so can order to dump trucks loads of top soil. Gotta get the veggy garden ready. Guess we are going to have a cool down next week. Aleta
AFDolly,
Thats it! Lakes of the Green! Yes!
It was driving me nuts.
Is it still nice there? Its been about 10 yrs since i've been. I loved going for an early morning swim and watching the deer come down for a drink.
I wonder if there is any lots for sale there or nearby?
I miss it terribly.
Ness ;-( sigh
Today I picked up my order of trees and bushes from the Arenac Conservation Dept. I kind of went crazy and ordered over 100 thinking they would be tiny sticks that wouldn't take much to plant. WRONG!! They were really nice trees. Some of them were 4 or 5 feet tall with huge, healthy root systems. My son was helping me plant. We only got the 25 white pine, 25 red oak and 25 silver maple and 5 hybrid poplar planted so far. We still have 25 white oak, 5 hazlenut, 5 trumpet vine, 5 fountain grass, 5 pampas grass, 5 high bush cranberry, 5 elderberry, 5 ninebark, 5 red osier dogwood, 5 forsythia, 1 bartlett pear, 2 new york plum and 2 redstar peach to plant tomorrow! Whew! I hope they all take. He was getting kind of tired and sloppy with his hole diggin toward the end. Ha!! Most of the grasses and bushes will go down by the new pond.
Weather couldn't have been more perfect than it was today.........warm and sunny! Hope everyone is having fun digging in the dirt and getting some of that fresh air and sunshine.
Brenda
Ness, yes there is still property for sale there and all around here. I live about 3.5 miles east of Glennie on F30.
It is dreary out today. But boy ,didn`t we have a great week for playing in the dirt. My body is feeling it , though!!!!
Everyone have a GREAT DAY!!!!!! Aleta
HOLY SMOKES its cold!! my hands are freezing and i had to dig out my heavy duty socks today.
I dont know if we will have any apricots after this cold spell-happens every yr!
Yesterday I dug and potted more stuff for the plant trade, lots more i want to do but not today! i sure hope this passes by quick i saw south dakota got 9in of snow yesterday-for heaven sakes it better head straight NORTH!!!!
Everything in the GH is looking great and cant wait to get more done!
Brenda----wow thats alot of trees to plant-LOL it will be beautiful in a few yrs
talk laterz-gotta get busy-wasted the day online again!!(rolls eyes)
Cold -windy here too - gotta haul the heater out to the greenhouse. Cherry and apple trees in bloom and a freeze coming tonight. I have several new clematis up and I'm going to put pots over them...grrrr This is ridiculous...
Awful here today, cold and windy. We are expecting a freeze tonight. Had to bring my tray of daylily seedlings in the house.
Yes ,going to have a few cold nights. we have just been getting spoiled with the nice weather we have been having. The poor plants don`t know what to do.
Hubby is going to order the topsoil for the garden tomorrow ,and then we have to take old truck over to Dad`s and get some 13 year old horse manure, It looks like muck it is so rich, and it is free
I get to go to the Dentist tomorrow and get this tooth pulled, then we will go to Tawas and do our monthly shopping.
With the gas prices ,the way they are , we are we will be staying close to home this summer.
We have lots to do so that won`t be a problem.............Aleta
Got to 55 here today. Going down to 25 tonight.
It is going to warm up and they say be sunny for the next week or so.
Haven`t been doing much in the yard this week.
Black dirt will be her the first of next week so will be busy then. Aleta
Hey Brenda ...Blocks is opened and they really added on..if you go wear some comfortable shoes...Lots of good prices too and a good selection...
Loretta...
Ooooh thanks.
Hi Loretta,
Thanks for the heads up on Blocks. I just found out today. My old neighbor from Garden City called me from Blocks and asked me what I wanted. I gave her my must have order and she bought them for me. I'm not sure if or when I can get down there. I live in AuGres now. If I can't make it my husband drives right by there from his work so if I give him a detailed list he can pick it up for me. :)
My friend said they weren't that busy which is very unusual for Blocks. Sure do miss my favorite nursery. Found a couple nice ones here in AuGres but the prices are much higher. I have mostly perennials now. I will only plant annuals if they're cheap since I can't enjoy them that long. I've been planting lots of trees and bushes too.
Going to Blocks on opening day was a yearly tradition for me but I will find new places up here to visit. Four Seasons has a nice selection of healthy looking perennials and annuals. I bought 5 catmints there today in gallon pots for $9.95 each.
Have fun at Blocks!!
Tomorrow is their Opening Day but since everything was ready to go they opened it up...I was out grocery shopping and ran into a friend and she said it was opened..I'm sure glad she told me or I would have been there at the busiest day of the year..They had a nice selection of coralbells $7.50 for a gallon container...All their prices are great and nice healthy plants...They have a ton more greenhouse also...
Loretta...
