Donna, it will make a big difference as to whether you have sown these seeds under artificial light, a greenhouse, or outside. I just noticed you are in a warm climate, so you've probably sown your seeds outdoors. I agree with Georgiaredclay under those circumstances. Your only other concern could be heavy rains washing away seeds, but I don't imagine that is an issue either.
I grow all my seeds under fluorescents in the basement, so too much light is never an issue. I do winter sow some in domed flats on the porch, but it's cold out there. Leaving the domes on too long is more of a molding issue than a heat or light issue!
Seed Snatchin' XVII...Making More Seeds
Hi, My name is Susan, I'm a compulsive gardener and when I try to explain this to people they have no idea, but you, my garden friends, you know the truth. :)
Sidney that was a great time.. I just wanted to offer just about the only thing I had at the time to everyone there since I really didn't have much and felt bad about being such a newbie and taking without giving back.. that wont be problem this year! And you still remeber they were Zinnias!? Wow, your sharp!
Jim, I wish you lived next door too! I had to take the boys in today and give them some yellin so the neighbors wouldn't think I was out of my mind. I'm sure they hear me yelling down the street.. Like when one is hiding and not answering me.. That's one of my favorites..Those boys will drive a momma crazy if you let them... Like trying to run each other over with the toy jeep and my youngest dragging the oldest when his feet were stuck in the jeep and his body was on the dirt.. is it any wonder I love the peacful tranquility of plants and growing them?
Nicole, if your not going to the round up, I will ship you back some plants you didn't start!
So long as I have wide open spaces, i have room for more plants and thats final!!
Here's my covered pots... and after finished sowing and covering them up, I went on to propagate the heck out of these two sedums I got at Home Depot today. They said no asexual reproduction on the tag, so somebody will probably arrest me soon! I will cover those with plastic as well so they can stay humid. I paid just under $5 per plant and so far I've made 40 more plants from one and 20 of another...(before it got dark and I had to quit) NOW $5 is a much better price:)
I told my husband that I like this much better than having a green house and that if I did have a greenhouse, it certainly wouldn't be large enough to do this!

Oh why didn't you tell me you wanted sedum. Mine has already put out this year big time. I moved it last year to be with the hosta's that you and I purchased at Winterberry's Farm. Sure hoping the hosta's come on back
BTW Susan that is a great job on the pots and the covering.
All that great young energy she has Jim. I'm almost certain your Hostas will be really nice this year. Mine are.
Sidney
Hey Jim, one of them was Sedum Angelina and I liked the way it looked and I'll have to look on the tag for the other one... I just liked the way they looked! The hosta will come back :)
Thanks! I don't feel youthful this morning... feel like going back to bed!!
Susan
Yeah we know how old you act.. LOL Just wish I still had the energy you have. I saw all that work you did in your yard.
I've been busy wintersowing and now that March is here, I plan on doing my tender annuals and veggies/tomatoes. I like the wall of water idea and might try that.
By the way - here is an excellent artichoke recipe.. http://whatscookingamerica.net/Vegetables/StuffedArtichoke.htm
Thanks Jim... I will admit, I have shoveled more dirt and horsey poo than anyone I personally know!..... But I did fall back asleep this morning!! So I DO get tired!! And I can see that were starting to have things bloom and it appears that my daily Claritan habit is in full swing for the rest of the year. Most normal people would not garden with allergies, but we already know I'm not normal!!
Welcome to seed snatchers Anita!!
Susan
Try 'Nasalcrom' too Susan, once morning and night. You sure are going to have a pretty yard, or are you doing the driveway plant sale thing?
I have a lot of yard work to do. May get called to work tomorrow. Keep ya'lls fingers crossed.
Sidney
Thanks Sidney, I am going to be planting as much as possible in my yard. I have huge beds. This is not the best picture to show it, but this bed is 180 feet long (except for the driveway) X 10 divided by a fence and that is my full sun bed, then I have another new full sun bed to one side where I'm doing Dahlias this year. I have another mostly sun bed on the west side where I have foxgloves that are due to bloom and I hope to give them some balsam impatients as bedfellows. i am creating huge beds that are shade/sun mixed on the other side fothe house and back.... So, I certainly have lots of room to put them. i will also be sharing of course!! I would like to earn some cash and why not with my passion? i have recently met some folks that make money out of their yards and I'd like to build up to that one day.. It sure would help support my habit.
In another thread, I was about to respond to hopw crazy i am about gardening since that seems to be the case with many DG'ers and it was so long I had to start a thread, so here it is. http://davesgarden.com/place/t/579842/
Susan
Susan that is such a good picture.
Susan I love that picture!!! WOW!!! I also love the way you made your 'greenhouse.' What material did you use? Just PVC and the plastic tarp? I could do that!! LOL!!
Send me back my plants I didn't start! That made me laugh out loud! Ha! Ha! I am going to start a few things this weekend I swear I am!!! Just me and the boy all weekend and I should be able to dig in....
Glad to see everyone's progress!! Hi Jim!!
Nicole
Great pic... including the little sunflower!
Hi Nicole, We have been talking about you on the brug forum. I posted a picture of the AW Begonia you gave me a cutting of at the Ga roundup and everyone is wanting a cutting. I know it wasn't a brug. LOL I posted a picture of it wishing someone a happy birthday.
It is really nice. Thanks again for the cutting.
That's a truly beautiful begonia. Some plants are just as beautiful without the blooms, and this is one of them!
Thanks all! Yes Nicole.. I got the clear plastic at Home Depot. I don't think you would even have to use PVC... do you have a bamboo grove anywhere nearby? I got the PVC for free since I told my husband to bring it home from our business. I know that we pay for it, but it just feels free.
That IS a great plant right there!
Susan
I've got approxamately 14.2786 tons (not really) of bamboo it's taken over the southeast corner of the place - if someone wants, needs any - just let me know.
Hey, I would love some bamboo, but somehow I don't think it would love Minnesota.
lol Dyson.
I'd love some, can you bring it over?? LOL!
Susan
Watch out Susan!!! that is one you had best not wish for. Even the gardencenter bamboo stakes have been known to take root. FF's folks have a hole side yard in ElPaso that they can't get rid of. I will never have any, even ornamental.
"Beware Gardener Notice" Kinda like a public seervice announcement.
Sidney
Sidney's right! Even up in my neck of the woods it can be a very invasive plant! Once it takes hold, you can't get rid of it!
What? It can take root from a cut piece in the ground for staking veggies? Even if your not trying to grow it? WOW!! Thanks for the info. I guess I'll have to wrap the ground end with duct tape real good. I like the look better than 2X4's and it's free and I like that too. I would NEVER ever plant this stuff.... even the ones that garden centers say are non-runners... I keep away. If I saw a neighbor plant it where it could get to my property in a few years, I would jump the fence in the middle of the night and rip it out before it took hold. If I couldn't get it all and saw it coming, I'd trench and put down the hard sheets to keep it out. I have met a couple that don't enjoy their back yard and wont go out there for all the bamboo that has come over from the neighbors.. sad, sad, sad..
I have seen pole beans grown on bamboo T-pee's with one part left open for the door and I plan on doing that this year for the kids.
Susan
Where my son moved from had a forest in part of his yard. I used it and never had any to root but it was taking over the place.
this is going to crack many of you up - My better half (bless her heart & good intentions) is always buying plants that never get planted. She intends to plant them but it does not happen. I will notice a new plant on the front porch approxamitely every two weeks. The plant will eventually die. At this point I will normally render same to the compost pile minus container ( anyone need containers ?). This spring I noticed a very large and very dead appearing plant on the porch and in the few moments I had added the contents of the basket that it contained it to the compost pile, then proceeded to work not to think of it again.
Turns out the the plant in question was Bamboo and not dead. - can't get to the pile anymore- need to buy a bigger chainsaw and start over - Dyson
LOL- you might need to rent a panda bear!
Oh c'mon guys! You can't tell me you don't lust after that black bamboo they are selling at Wayside for 60 bucks a plant? What if I put it in a pot on my driveway?
make sure it's strong and the roots/runners won't sneak out the bottom..
Ivy, black bamboo is the bad girl at school that guys just loved to look at and have fun with, but not bring home to momma and keep "in the garden" for the long haul.
Susan
I'd like to have some clumping type bamboo myself, maybe the "umbrella" one. Not sure if would put into big pot or into the side yard. ~ Suzi :)
You guys are funny! I too admit I lust over that black bamboo... I always thought it would be cool to get a long and wide CONCRETE planter and put it on my deck to plant it in. I want to have a black bamboo screen! Still haven't had the courage (or the cash...) for it though!
Jim that's cool about my begonia! It's famous! LOL!! I bought it oh goodness probably 7 years ago. It's never been repotted and I've never amended the soil in that pot.. I do put fertilizer in my water though. Anyway, it grows so large still in that pot I constantly have to cut it back! I have it in several spots in the house. I love plants that want to live!
Nicole
On 14th street in midtown Atlanta on my way to the Botanical gardens, I saw a new highrise with a huge windowed lobby that is growing exceptionally tall bamboo in about 4 different beds surrounded by tile. My first thought when I saw it...Now that's the PERFECT place for that stuff!
Susan
oh I bet it was beautiful. For those that are interested [I'm included], I found this website - very informative http://www.jademountainbamboo.com/html/info/northwest.asp

You go girls!
Sidney
On Wednesday, I seeded my tomatos. Have 32 varieties and 288 seeds. Okay so I went overboard. We give away a lot of them, but have 100 plus in the garden. I have 4 new daylily from seed, mexican hat, corepsis, some columbine, a variety of peppers, hybiscus, can't remember what else. Lots more to do, I have two new beds to fill this year plus the 5 existing ones.
Defoe, you have mail!! WOW! My husband thinks that I grow way to many tomatoes!! Good for you! My wintersown seeds are sprouting and doing well. I just love staring at them.
Nicoles seeds are coming up already!!! WOW!!
Susan
I've started on my Week 11 bag of seeds (11 weeks til last frost). I have already transplanted lobelia to 4 packs, as well as leeks 12 to a pot, and hardy geraniums to 4 packs. I wish I had room to plant everything to 4 packs and save a step later on, but I don't, so I've begun transplanting dianthus and petunias to 6 packs. Between the newly planted seeds and the transplants, I have 80 flats going in the basement. I potted up my begonia bulbs last week, and yesterday, I potted up the dahlia bulbs. All the light racks are lit up downstairs, and by next week sometime, I'll probably have to turn on the big halide light and set up some tables. The race is on!
