Technical update on the servers

For those who are interested and following the progress of our servers, here is the update:

This morning I switched over the database from spirit to lion and changed spirit to a slave. This is the new permanent situation that I have been planning since last November. Here is what it looks like:

lion: hosts the entire master Dave's Garden database, and handles all updates and most selects.

spirit: slave to lion, handles -SOME- selects (those heavy pages), all business logic.

temple: slave to lion.

lion is a AMD64 machine with 1.2TB of RAID 6, using four SATA-150 disks, plus 4G RAM.

Currently all the regular files on the system (scripts, pics, etc) are hosted on lion and shared via NFS to spirit and temple. NFS isn't known for performance, though, so the next step is to replicate local copies of DG onto each server so that they can serve them from local disk.

This May, I project that DG will serve pages to over a million unique visitors; we have reached a point where a single server is nowhere near enough. With this new configuration that I have, we can scale up to serve multiple million people in a month, and I couldn't be more excited. :-)

Dave

I notice that the whole system is much faster now, too. :)

I may not always understand it, but I'm ALWAYS impressed by it! I'm sure all the techno things are responsible for DG just getting better and better!
I do love your garden, Dave.

now, does this update have anything to do with the forums in homeTalk being unavailable??? i waited 30 minutes, & still getting the same error...

Yes it does, and this was the first report I've seen of it. It's fixed now.

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

I'm like pattischell, don't understand all the technical stuff but sure glad Dave does and keeps everything up-to-date and more.

thank you Dave! sorry, i would have said something sooner, can't b elieve i was the only report LOL...

You're welcome, and thank you for the report!! It's funny that sometimes there are a dozen reports, and other times nobody reports anything. It's a strange anomaly.

I keep getting this one ........ mainly trying to get into this thread.

What happened to the poor old Lamb?

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

Dave fed it to the Lion?

mg

A customer of mine is using lamb right now, but they are leaving soon and then I'll have that to use for DG also.

Did Something Just Happen with the Server at 5:30pm(PST) or...
am I Fighting Something Trying to Takeover My System?

The Site Slowed Down to Nothing and I Couldn't Get on and it Lasted About 5-10 Minutes. Couldn't Even Go Through the Web.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

same thing happened to me so I don't think it's your computer. I had no trouble getting on other websites so I think it was something here.

i kinda thot it sounded like we were in narnia, indy

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

Dave, I know that you are fighting overloaded server(s) problems at this time. We probably have many of the "normal" internet routes in the south (ie from the hurricanes) not restored yet. However I have another perplexing problem for you.

About a month ago I started useing VONAGE (voip) phone service. since then
there has been a great disparty in the amout of time that it takes a page to load here and I have not been able to use the "chat room" at all.

Is the problem because of the VONAGE or the servers?

I can do without the Chat (though it was fun on occasion). The VONAGE cut my phone bill from 100 a month to 27 w/unlimited long distance w/in the states.

as always Best Regards - Dyson

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Dyson, we got Packet8 when we moved. It is pretty much the same thing you have. We had a problem with the internet disconnecting whenever the phone rang. Hubby adjusted something and it works fine now. You may just have to tweak something but unfortunately I don't know what.

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

There is a setting on the VONAGE to reduce the amout of bandwith consumed - done that w/no avail. Not loseing sites when ringing just slow in some cases w/o ringing.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

We use vonage, too and it usually drops my internet connection during a phone call. However, our porblem is not the bandwidth, but the fact our phones and internet wireless network don't like each other :o(

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Vonage? Packet8? Low phone bills? Can someone start a thread on this, please? I'd like to hear more.

Dave, thanks for the updates on the servers. I'm always interested in those topics; it's actually an education for me!

Shoe.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

We're playing with Gizmo and so far we really like it!

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

Terry, I use a wireless network also, but alas my phone is wired to the modem provided by Vonage,

the only thing I can suggest if you must have everything wireless is to switch to phones with operateing frequencies as far as possible from that of the wireless router -

ie. if you are running a 2.4Ghz wireless router, there are wireless phones available that operate at 900Mhz.

Just an idea.
