Hey Gita~~~My icecicles are bigger than yours! My son lives near you and my grandaughter goes to "the mall" every Friday night.
How Much Snow Did You Get???
Luke,
Oh, mu gosh!!! ^Your Camelia is already bloomong????? I have one by my frond door. It faces north and never gets any sun. Last year it bloomed so pretty. This year--be still my heart!--it is covered by buds, however, none of them are showing color yet. Mine is a double red--pretty common!
Yes! YOU WIN in the icicle wars! As I look out my bedroom window, mine are getting longer and longer as they melt and then re-freeze. NOT going out there to take another picture!
Send me a D-mail if you plan to come this way. In the summer, you're welcome to stop by and sit a while on my porch swing. I am 5 minutes from the Mall.
Here's a picture of mine from last spring.
If you want any 'woodland" plants this spring..come and git um. I have ferns, woodland phlox, wood poppies, stella daylillies, etc. etc.
Mine faces east and I have had it for years and still very small..Yours is gorgeous. My son lives on Rose Haven Road off Bucks School House road.
Luke,
I know where Bucks....is! It is such an interesting road to drive on. Then it dumps you out on Putty Hill and it is back to reality. I presume your son does not live towards ECC but the other way?
I live practically nextdoor to Perry Hall HS. on Ebenezer Rd. Been here 36 years.
Thanks for the offer of your woodland plants. I have no "woodland" to plant them in! What are "woodland phlox"? also--"Woodland Poppies"? Got any pictures to post? I have some ferns and more Stellas than I know what to do with. Love them both! I need to dig up my Stellas and divide them.
I really don't know all that much about Camelias. My Camelia is now about 4' tall. I have had it for maybe 5 years. Is yours in the ground or in a pot? Do you feed it "acid" type of food? Like, Cottonseed Meal? That's what they like.
Here's a couple more shots to "dazzle" you:
This was taken in end of may. The buds are about to pop.
Gita, Lovely is the word!
Wish I could grow them up here.
Andy P
Andy,
I bet you could!!!! You just have to make sure you buy the perennial type of a Camelia. It is the one with the bugger, dark green, and very shiny leaved. There is another one, usually sold right next to the perennial one. It has smaller leaves and not so dark green.
I do know one thing, Camelias do not like to be in an area where a lot of winds will whip around them. Even though mine faces North and never gets any sun, it is in a protected area.
Thanks for your kind words!! Gita
Oh how I envy you Zone 7's your camellias. I almost bought one at the state arboretum sale last year but the seller actually talked me out of it when I explained my growing conditions which are very windy in the winter. :( That is a real beauty, Gitagal.
Gitagal...Are you near Maryland Flower and Foliage~~~~~off of Ebenezer road....they are a whoelsale place but sort of anyone can go there and very very reasonable. I get most of my annuals there and some perennials.....Vincent Farm Road I believe. The woodland poppies and Phlox divaricata can grow in sun. And yes, I think most people have tooooooooooo many stellas! It seemed that everyone ran out and bought alot of them because they were reblooming and to me they never rebloomed very much. Happy Returns is a better color. And you must be near Babikow Nursery (also wholesale and a little more strict).
Luke,
I live on the "other" Ebenezer rd. The one between Belair Rd. and Honeygo Blvd. The two are often confused by people that don't know there are two Ebenezers. I suppose years ago it was all one road. same as Joppa road which got chopped in pieces by progress.
I know the nursery you are referring to. I have never shopped there, but have driven by there. I often wondered what they sold. All you ever see is bushes and evergreens.
My Stellas do not really re-bloom eaither. maybe a sporadic flower now and then. Then again. they are in a bed literally FULL of Silver Maple roots! Like, this 30 year old SM is about 4'-6' away from the bed! YES!!!..............I planted it myself! We were (then) in a new development and everyone wanted quick shade. Now I am kicking myself! Becuse of the two trees in my small back yard, I cannot really dig anywhere to speak of. It is a HUGE effort and chore for me to even dig a couple of inches deep.
Babikow Nursery is on Babikow Rd. DAH! It is HUGE!!!! They provide perennials to a lot of retail stores. Yes, I know that they are wholesale.
13 years ago I worked for a grower in the Cub Hill area--Clifford Egerton Greenhouses. Back then, he was mostly wholesale too. Last year I thought I would go back and check them out. Now they sell to anyone that comes by. Money is money! They grow all their own stuff. It is good quality! So, I bought all my bedding plants there in one fell swoop. I also patronize my local farmer's stand on Belair Rd. (Hubers) and Richardson Farms on the "other" Ebenezer Rd. in White Marsh. I do not buy a lot of bedding plants at my HD where I work (The White Marsh store by the Cosco) as I do not think they are as good quality. Pushed too soon by too much fertilizing to bring them to bloom so they can be sold. The root systems suffer....They are not as hardy....Oh, I buy enough there b/c it is so convenient, but I prefer other places.
I have a few interesting seeds to share. Drop me a D-mail and I'll tell you all about it. This is becoming too much of a you and me conversation on this Forum. Might get boring to others..
Ciao, Gita
Great pictures here! I can't believe I didn't get outside to take any, but at least I can enjoy all of yours :) We got 7" of the soft, fluffy stuff here. Although by Monday with the increasing temps, would have been great for a snowball fight!
Dea, sorry to hear about your pump. I can certainly empathize with you. When I lived in a rural area in the northeast, we could depend on the power going out with every storm and the pump would be down for days - the year of the ice storm, 1998, we lost our 'facilities' for two weeks! Hauled alot of water and melted alot of snow to take care of our "business" :)
Gita, good for you for not buying those plants "Pushed too soon by too much fertilizing to bring them to bloom so they can be sold"! This has been a complaint of ours for years. One of many reasons we got out of the wholesale business because all the garden centers wanted the plants "forced" - blooming and ready for sale earlier than their natural cycle.
Andy, Sarah looks like she adapted very well to the northern climate :) We had a similar experience with a dog with a "broken leg". She was a sweet little Springer Spaniel that had damaged some of the ligaments in her leg while trying to crawl over a fence that had been set up to keep the litter confined to their room. The breeder was trying to find someone to give her a good home because they couldn't sell her since the vet told them she would always walk with a limp. We had another Springer at the time and thought she'd make a good companion so we grabbed her. We exercised the heck out of her when she was young and by the time she was a year old she could run circles around our other dog!
I am new to the whole Dave's Garden, I do have to say I am having a BLAST! The forum's are great and the people are so helpful, and the information- WOW, I had no idea....I am trying to improve my gardening and I want to make a Hummingbird/Butterfly garden, not your usual one, I want to be different, I have butterfly bushes and I would like to know about different plants to attract birds, hummers, butterflies etc....this whole area I can see from my kitchen window, so I would like to make it as colorful and whimsical as possible....suggestions, I am all for them......I really can't wait for the spring now..
rcn, Sarah has adapted very well. When I found hew she was 15% overweight, frightened of kids and very shy. Not to mention the stainless steel pin in her left femur, from knee to hip. I had the pin removed after a bump was noticed on her butt, irritation.
She used to limp when tired or cold. But I haven't noticed any limping this winter at all.
She gets her almost daily walks and a big yard to play in and of course her "Cookie Toss", rain or shine.
I got her at 14 months, she is now 6.
Good food, exercise and a little loving goes a long way, as I'm sure you know.
Glad to hear about your Springer, dogs are great.
Here is a 'raw' pic from today, notice how the snow has receded.

Geez, Andy!!!
You blew me away! The whole time I have seen your name in all the different forums I thought you were caring for (possibly?) a wife with serioud physical and mental problems whose name is Sarah. as you are "Sarah's keeper".
Today, I found out it was your dog. I don't know what to say?????
I have never had a dog. I have had many cats to keep my two growing daughters happy. I have loved them, tolerated them, wished they would go away, gone out at night with a flashlight looking for them, cried as I had to call my daufghter(away at colege) that her cat had been hit by a car and killed, wondered if I shoulf freeze it in my food freezer so she could say her final godd-byes when she came home, cried when my favorite cat, Hobo, a big, orange tabby disappeared for a week (given up for dead) and then re-appeared one night on our doorstep--his back end paralyzed, but he had come home. HOW? I have no idea! Then, having to put him to sleep b/c the Vet said he was too "gone" for any hope of a further life. Talk about "love"!
I took this cat in after he had sat on my doorstep for 7 days--all mangy and dirty and full of ear mites and his paws infected from being outside in the wet woods for who knows HOW long? We had started feeding him, so, of course, he was not going to leave! As he, slowly, wore down my resistance, i decided to adopt this cat but first I took him to my Vet's and had all the necessary "things" done. Only then was he allowed the comfort of our home.
And so-- 5 or 6 cats passed through my life. The last one, a huge, black cat my daughter called Mina, was adopted by her from a shelter. This cat sure was independent-- and SOOOOO regal! She was NO lap cat! NOOOO!!!! She owned YOU!
Eventually, my daughter moved to Colorado and swore she would come back and get her cat. Yeah! Right!
So, I cared for Mina for 2 more years. Then, when I was going to visit her, I decided to take the cat back to her. Of course, she had to have all the shots and a physical to clear her for travel. I also asked for a sedative so this cat could survive the 4-5 hour trip by plane to CO.
My daughter mailed me this carry-on cage that measured about 8"x17". This cat weighed in at almost 17 lbs! I had to literally stuff her in the carry-on box, and then they made me take her out at the security gate at the airport!
Flying her there cost me another $50. So, she spent the flight at my feet under the seat in front of me--sedated. Not gonna bore you with all the rest.
To make a long story short, "she" turned out to be a "he", hence the size! Now he resides (still) with her in Seattle, Getting old.......
Andy! WHY did I get into this huge story of all the cats that have passed through my life? I think to illustrate that we all DO have this love for all the pets that pass through our lives. Do I ever want to have another pet? NO!!!! Too taxing on the emotions and on my free time!
I DO understand why Sarah is oh so special to you.
Thanks for "listening"! Gita
Gita, That's a great story!
Years ago a friend told me I needed a dog. I didn't know if I was around enough to keep one 'happy'.
As I got older my 'wild & crazy' ways subsided and I figured it was time.
I grew up with dogs and cats but hadn't had one in 30 years. Sidekick Sarah is my second and I couldn't imagine this house without a dog.
Like the first, she was a rescue. The difference was I 'shopped around' the second time. I hit every shelter within 50 miles for weeks. The odd thing was, Sarah was one of the first dogs I had seen and she slowly grew on me.
So here I am with the best dog I ever had.
I should have named her Velcro. She sticks by my side, never jumps on furniture, absolutely house broken, generally quiet, clean, smart and tries hard to please.
Now I'm the one that's running off at the mouth, LOL.
Sorry if I didn't make her species clear at the onset.
Here is my favorite pic, from last July..
