I walked out in the yard today, I found 2 daffodils blooming. Yeha! Plus, a few crocus were in flower. Spring is here! Happy dance!!!!!
Are your daffs and crocus starting to show green? (Part II)
Sorry tabasco, not that ornithogalum, i got some seed from Sth africa last year of another, not sure what I have got from them yet.
This year will be my first with O, nutans, Tabasco, sorry. I will probably post a picture when they bloom next summer, so you remind me then and I'll allocate some for you.
K. James
Sorry Tabasco - I have never grown those :-( Though they are very interesting looking!
sorry T, I didn't know the plant and was lazy to look it up. How rude of me!
oh, I just saw where you had posted a link. Pretty plant. never seen it before. Sort of looks like pineapple lily.

Tabasco- wait till "Brent and Becky's" has their summer bulb sale (or don't wait, if you choose) and pick up a bunch of them cheaply to experiemnt with. They mark things down 25%, then 50% off, and they store the darned things so well that they are in perfect health so late in the season.
K. James
Kenton - when do they typically have their sale?
kenton and everyone-- Thank you for your advice and offer---I did buy some O. magnums last season and planted them.
Now I think they are coming up and I wanted to plant something around them-- maybe peonies or poppies? Well, we shall have to see...will have to go by 'trowell and error" method and see what's in the garden center when they are blooming.....
sale, sale did anybody say SALE?????????????
I can't remember, Tammy. I know their fall sale of 50% is starts the day after thanksgiving.
My first order from them was thier sale last year- I was tremendously impressed. Now they are my favorite company. But what Post Office gremlin ate my catalogue this year?
K. James
Kenton, I have'nt recieved my B&B spring catalog either. Oh, and the flu has left me (hurray!), so I'll be digging your primula this weekend.
I made it all the way to the bottom! Whew! Long thread but great pics. Love that Iris reticulata Pauline and the Cream Beauty crocus - those were beautiful. And Wallaby - those beautiful Cyclamen coum you grew from seed.. I think I would have very loving feelings toward those little guys to wait 5 years for bloom. We are having a very windy spring morning - they say 35-40 mph winds - I'm not going out to test it and try to take pictures. But my hellebores have been in bloom since January, and narcissus and crocus are all out of the ground, as are a bunch of allium christophii for some reason. And what I think are last years Easter Lilies. The 3 polyanthus primroses that I got in the ground from last year are packed tight with buds - one bloomed white in January so I know what that one is.
Hi alyrics, yes I thought the day would never come for the cyclamen, I thought they would remain stunted forever! All 3 are now fully in flower, must take a pic while they are, should get a lot of seed!
Interested to see your hellebores, mine have opened at different times, the Queen of the Night first mid january, now Ashwood Garden hybrid has fully opened. I have had a polyanthus in a pot blooming for some time, it's a bit tatty but nice. Slugs like it.
The Ashwood G hybrid
Stunning, Wallaby.
So good to hear, Neal. I am rearing to work outdoors, but currently watching the fluffy but wet snow descend upon the ground slowly and relentlessly. What of Spring break, dangit? I don't want to compact the new soil.
Arylics, may I invite you to post pictures onto the part three thread in this forum?
How perfect Kenton, you'll get to see the primula bloom this spring, and can divide the clump afterward and have plenty to work with. They respond to quickly to a few warm days (huge grin!!!). Just came in from basking in excitement from all the new growth I'm finding. I can see the tight buds of Muscari azureum, and hyacinths, and lots of daffs! All these hellebores are just awsome to!
Neal
Janet, very pretty hellebores!
I wish I can dig this weekend, Neal. Well, I can, but I'll be soaked. It snowed today, too. Weird. Remember, this is 10a.
So, like Nery said, "SALE???"
I got my B&B catalog about a week ago.
I'm happy to hear you are feeling better Neal.
And I've got bloom! I'll be out with the camera tomorrow
and posting by Sun night. It was so warm today I didn't
bother with a coat. I think spring is finally coming...
Tam
How dare you two (Tam & Neal) say "growth," "buds," or "bloom" without posting a picture. Do you realize the dose of curiosity that administers? Unsafe levels.
K.
LOL
OK I'll fill in with some 'growth', well I'm hoping anyway!
Thanks all for your helleborus enthusiasm!
Mg snow in 10a????????? We are expecting it here the next 2 days, and who know when else? 35/36F too, when they were telling us we were going to get some warmth around 50F for Sunday! And days after that, complete reversal! What is happening, cold in warm, warm in cold, doing my head in!
So much affected by this I had to buy a pot of bulbs in flower today! Welll it was cheap, and there is a primrose with white flowers and a green eye, all the other white ones were a mustard yellow eye. Some Tete a Tete and a blue Hyacinth waiting to open, ~smile~
Sorry to work up a dose of curiosity, will take a pic tomorrow!
Perhaps you subsrcibe to the wrong weather service. You go to BBC, or Weather Report. I go outside and look at the sky; it's never wrong. Except of course, when I want it to be warmer...
The freeze and snow didn't actually damgage anything here- pictures are a-coming.
Perhaps I should hop in my tardis and look for myself!
it's very rare that it snows here. a light dusting...then mostly hail. it burns right away in the daytime, and hasn't killed any of my plants just yet. tonight will be another cold night. we'll see how my brugs do.
oh, make sure you take photos and post them please!
on another developing story, i was just telling neal that i bought half a dozen DA roses.
=)))
DA: Please solve this acronym for this Rose ignorant person.
Ed. to change "antonym" to "acronym!" At least MG knew what I meant.

david austin, kenton =))).
Now I'm more ignorant.
Hi, again, I'm back lurking...
Please explain. Antonym of what? I am lost.
Now, new topic question--if you don't mind-- speaking of cold and weather--
What if I have some bulbs that sprouted and then a cold snap turned them into brown mush? I think they are one of three kinds of bulbs-- a kind of giant allium, or white camassia, or my ornithalgalum magnum? (Lost the labels)
Will they recover? Should I be covering the survivors to try to save them from other cold snaps (sure to come?).
Thank you again. (-:
They look like this (can you make out the elongated brown stalk in the low center of the pic?):
I mis-typed, Tabasco.
I'm thinking Allium tentatively; The bulb is going to survive, but those leaves are clearly screwed. It may still be early enough that it could send up more leaves to replace them, which will set it back ever so minimally. I'd expect it to still boom, really. My Allium tips are toast. I don't know why they come up so when they can't take it!
K
snow in forecast tonight and tomorrow. worried about my lilies, daffs, and tulips. are they going to be ok? just overnight of light dusting...but so unusual.
Annapet, take a gander at the recent pictures (mine, I boast) in the pt 3 thread.
Tulips that don't close tightly are at a small risk of being overwieghted, but that's a far cry from anything relevant...
tabasco, It seems like any of the larger alliums I've grown ended up with cruddy looking leaves by the time they bloomed, but they stayed closer to the ground and were'nt an eyesore, and the plants seemed unbothered.
Annapet, I think your babies will be fine since the temps are'nt that low and it won't stay cold for long. They tolerate a lot worse than that here just fine. The lilies would be the only concern, but only if it gets well belowe freezing (in the 20's).
DA, antonym for David Austin roses. David Austin, Sr. developed the reblooming, English roses with old garden rose form and fragrance, but on reblooming plants. There are other families of hybridizers working toward similar goals to.
Moonglow,
I had a bunch of lilies out a couple of weeks ago and the temperature dropped to 24 a couple of nights, and there was no damage to any of them. I was surprised since, while the bulbs are hardy, the emerging shoots are NOT. The hyacinths and daffodils were open but were unfazed. Good luck! How cold is it supposed to get, anyway?
Oh Kenton... I've got even more bloom... and I won't post the pictures til later ...
(said with that incredible maturity us gardners always have hahaha).
Glad we sent the cold & snow elsewhere for the day! Its glorious here... gotta
be at least 60F already and maybe will go up to 70F. Sunny too. I'm heading
out right after I log off to take pictures. And PLAY IN THE DIRT for the first time
this year. Woo Hoo.
Tam
great for you, tam!
it's almost 9am here and warming up already. 34F at the moment, and i haven't gone outside. snow is gone though, but a 30-car pile-up by the golden gate bridge, 10 miles from me. the snow earlier, and a drunk driver.
steve it got hi-20's in the wee hours. we're not used to that kind of brrrrrr.....i will check my lilies because they are out there.
neal, i think it's time to review brent & becky's catalog to pair them off with lilies.
=) thank you all.
I see, 'Acronym'. Got it. A little slow. Too worried about my bulb sprouts....I like 'D.A.' roses but don't grow them here. So romantic.
Thanks for your opinions on my (possible) alliums. I hope they are alliums because as you say, allium leaves are alway scruffy and since they are members of the onion family I would think they would be tough and survive, but I don't know why I think that! They really look pretty dead. I wish I had labelled better so I would know what to be worried about (mourn for)!
Do you think I should go get some straw and put it over my other shoots for a few weeks (Zone 6a--Last frost date around April 18)? I did cover my eremurus. And I'll put my lily pots back in the garage if it's too early for them to be out. I basically thought that if they were shooting up they would deal with the weather well. Sob.
Moonglow, I can't imagine any snow you would get in Corte Madera would be hazardous to your spring bulbs. (Although if you lose some we can have a 'memorial service' together for them!)
I think we need to see more pics of 'growth' 'bud' and 'bloom'. All I have are close-ups of my maimed alliums/camassias/whatevers.
Oh, maybe those are on Part III. I keep forgetting about the sequel.
See you over there. t.
tabasco, your last frost date is April 18?? Lucky you! I am only a couple hours north of you in zone 5b and my last frost date is May 17. That extra month makes a BIG difference.
I'm in zone 5b, too, but I use May 1st as a good date for me. It's easy for me to remember because it's our oldest daughter's birthday and I remember years past when I planted before that, and most times, it was okay, but there were a couple of years when I had to cover things for a night or two. Generally, though, it works.

kylee, t, noh2o....party is continuing!
