Suggestion about too many forums...

Westford, MA(Zone 5b)

I am new to DavesGarden. I hope this is ok to post this here. I came over from Gardenweb. I must say I am impressed with all the features, great posts, photos, and especially all the friendly people here !

One comment I'd like to make is I hope not too many forums are added in the future. What happened over in Gardenweb is there were a lot of very 'specialized' forums that didn't have much traffic or postings. So I fear that this could happen here -- spread too thin. Too many forums may lead to this problem. This is just a suggestion but thought it was worth mentioning.

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

Sedum, I have similar concerns.
I've only been here a few months and never posted on GW but with all the specialty forums it's hard to figure out the best one to post a question for widest exposure.
Dave and his crew have done very well managing all of this.
I hope it doesn't get too scattered.
I can only speak for myself but how many forums can one 'watch' ?
(Terry, Please, if my comments go against the grain, Don't 'delete' me. DM me and I'll take care of it.)

Oh, feel free to post it anywhere it fits. So many of us hop all around everywhere and when a forum has too many areas of interest things get lost and pushed clear down the page, not that this is a mega problem of course but there is room for growth. (all of this in my humble opinion) With forums organized under title/subject heading you can't go wrong if your question pertains to that forum and you can post to other forums as well with the same question if it's under that subject. I love jumping around but that is just me. I know many stay with just a few forums and miss some of the new stuff going on. With the new search engine that is just going to ROCK when the bugs get worked out, we'll be able to find so much info plus some! I love the specialized forums!

Gamleby, Sweden(Zone 7a)

And if you happen to post it in the "wrong" forum!! psst we dont havem here !! onle places you may not get as many anwsweres for your particular question.
you will probebly get a friendly helpfull hint on the best place for it, as time passes you will easily find your way around.

Awwww, Andy - no worries. Your comments are safe ;o)

sedum, I think you might find this recent post from Dave helpful in allaying your fears: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/572525/

I joined DG as member #689 or something like that. I was excited to see us reach 700, then 800 members. 1,000 members was a HUGE milestone.

As the months and years rolled by, the milestones have grown bigger - 5,000 then 10,000....50,000 then 100,000. We recently passed the 200,000 mark and barely blinked.

Like many others, I liked the "small town" feel of DG, and I rejected the notion that we needed regional forums. But let's face it - with 200,000+ members, and 5,000 or so subscribers - that's a lot of people to squeeze into a few general forums. Many of the regional forums now have as many "regular" posters as our general topic forums did just a few years ago.

I think many members will continue to "run rampant" (*grin* - you know who you are) across nearly all the forums, while others - with limitations on their time and/or interests - will focus on a few forums and occasionally pop over into other areas.

Terry thanks for the link -- I think this does clarify things! I do like that there are the Home forums as well as the gardening ones especially the Vacations and Travel forum -- I am a travel addict as well as a gardening addict so I can now feed both addictions in one place!

Culpeper, VA(Zone 7a)

I have to admit that I'm definitely a member who "runs rampant" through the forums. And I do enjoy it.

Not only do I learn a lot about different things that normally aren't in my areas of interest, but sometimes someone has a question that I might be able to answer, even if the forum isn't one I normally frequent.

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

sedum, if it's any comfort, I'm having a little trouble adjusting to the wide ranging forum set up too. I miss a lot of the posters I used to run across. Oh, well... It'll all work out, I'm sure. t.

The term running rampant brings thoughts of a younger life.
Having been 71 for one day now I can 'fess up. yep I do!

I like the [Watch Thread] & the [Skip to New] Is that fast tracking lol.

Welcome sedum37 from a native Texican that has enjoyed your State.
tabasco T Has a point, "It'll all work out, I'm sure"

Depending on my mood, how I feel a certain day, I may try a forum new to me.
Most of the regulars I've met, know from the forums, I know where they live so there's a chance 'I can follow them' (Ya can run but ya shonuff can't hide) Lol.

Have a beautiful day.
Its mid 40's here /wind advisory high 20's tonight, not a cloud in tha sky.

Culpeper, VA(Zone 7a)

Are you taunting us HeyCharlie?? Lol!!! It's cold/raw, snowing & sleeting here at the moment, & is supposed to continue thru tomorrow.

Alexandria, IN(Zone 6a)

Hi Charlie...I'll be 71 in about 3 weeks. That's not old but just getting older. Now 80's man...that's ooold.

40's daytime.....that's not much better than here!!

My baby sister is wintering in McAllen where is stays warm most of the time.

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

Hey, heycharlie, We are under a Blizzard watch for tomorrow. I don't think I will do much outside except shovel after things settle down.
I like to cook in bad weather, how about apple pie and beef stew.
Back to the thread subject..... I have lost track of a couple DGers since the big change.
I still think it's getting too spread out, but obviously I'm in the minority on this. C'est la vie.

Those of you east of Cincinnati: Thank you for taking my winter storm. As of yesterday a.m. they were still predicting 1-3 inches of snow here. But the storm went southeast of us and we didn't get one flake.

Hey Breezy
you're pulling my leg:
http://www.visitculpeperva.com/ not a snow ball in site lol.

In 1956 after I got out of tha Army at Ft Bragg, moved to Alexandria Va. Worked at the old Wash. Nat'l airport.
My youngest was in diapers. Hand wash them, hang them on tha line, wait couple of hours and bring them in. Shake a few times hang them back up and in a short you had fluff dried diapers.
She will be 50 in June.

Hey Indy
Happy birthday in advance!
"Now 80's man...that's ooold". Haha I bet DonnaS up Wa way might not agree.
Her next will be 80. ruthalive may be her screen name.
(little oldtimers here ya see)

I live jus north of a little town called Shepherd Tx on Hwy 59.
Thats appx 60 mi north of Houston and about 450 north of McAllen.
Bet your snowbird baby sister passes in front of our place.
Haha I have to laugh when ya say, "stays warm most of the time"
-
In 1983-84 it froze tha oranges and grapfruits off tha trees in McAllen.
I had taken a load of odds and ends to their flea mkt.
Wow! Nobody was ready for that.

Advantage of our age is what we remember, selectively of course 'smile.
As a kid living in Houston I recall it froze Galveston bay.

I kid you not. Right now it's snowing so hard I can barely see my barn, which is only about 75 feet away. Six to 12 inches by tomorrow morning is the current forecast.

San Jacinto County, TX(Zone 8a)

Haha I believe you.

Stay warm.
That area is such a beautiful place.

I may have to buy and drive a bigrig to see some more of our great and beautiful country.

Charlie,

Thanks for tha garden slideshow. Even with all the tractor tools it shore looks like lots of work!! I love gardening, but .....

I was wondering a couple or three things. What do you do with all the vines and such in the fall? Your field didn't show any residue.

Also is your soil kind of sandy?

And is that motorhome in the background yours?

San Jacinto County, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey Indy
Soil is sand ie like sugar when dry.
I till most vines, stalks back into the soil. All beans, squash, okra, corn soforth.
-
Older tomato and eggplant don't do so good so I pull and burn.

Much of my property is on a slop. Besides tilling residue (healthy foliage) back in I add 20-30,000 pounds of mushroom compost each year.
I have many pictures I need, should add to the others.
Pic show why its easy for me to till. Tractor and Tiller is 42"
-
Yes to the motorhome but its seen its last mile.

More forums, yea!!!

Looks good, Charlie.
My sis and husband summer in northern Indiana on a lake next to some Amish farms. They head south through Texarkana and usually go through Victoria. I once spent some time at Fort Polk, La,...across the state line from you. It was ALL sand there.
Anyway I have a small farm tractor. I raise several plantings of sweet corn, lots of sweetpotaters, tomatoes, cantaloupes, fruits and my favorite crop....watermelons...really love them best of all.

My concern in the new "Home Forums" is people don't go there and questions don't get answered.
I had an urgent electrical proublem last week, so rather than chance an eventual answer under "Electrical" over there I posted it under the old faithful "Handyman" here.
I also have two new Threads here http://davesgarden.com/forums/f/homexfer/all/ that I don't know if anyone will ever see.
I do hope everyone will eventually get to those other Forums, but I like many really don't have time to check them out.
Sidney
