While the cat was away having his big Super Ball day

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Really?? I can/t wait for mine to grow into big plants...! I/m trying all sorts of new plants.
I have been successful in propagating 2 more seed types from seeds my mother collected in Liberia West Africa - 1976... I have no idea what they will be...I hope I can keep them alive!

This horrible cold front started clipping in this afternoon- It/s miserable.

The temp yesterday was in the mid 80's, then last night the wind started blowing. It was 46 this morning! Geez, talk about a shock! It warmed up some, but the wind is blowing.
Kell, I bought a baby New Zeland tree fern. I'm going to give it a try. Will it grow in a big pot?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes...its really been blowing here.

I kept mine in a pot all winter. I put it back in the ground a couple of weeks ago. They grow much better in the ground has been my experience.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

OK, it's in a pot now but I can plant it out in a day or two. I also got a mother fern. It has little babies on the fronds.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Your kidding?? that is cool. IF you happen to have camera- that would be interesting to see!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I have a camera, it's remembering to take the pictures that I have trouble with, lol. I will try to remember........

Oh Linda, I am sorry. I got side tracked! It is Longs in Oakland. I will look up the address later. It has a huge nursery. It is fantastic. I had them special order me 2 of those Pink Princess plants.
There is another nursery a few blocks over that is great also, in an Ace hardware. I want a corkscrew vine too! At least I think that is the one I want. Maybe it really is the snail vine I want.

Susie, I see them here in the ground, but the nursery told me a big pot would work fine for years! The last one I bought, the guy told me to just root prune and put it back into the same pot. They are drying out too quickly though. I will need to move them up soon.

Gosh Rj, seeds from 1976. That is too cool. You will have to let us know what you get.

I was at a restaurant last week and they had planters with this fern in them. They all had baby ferns on the fronds. I thought it was so neat. Does yours look like this Susie? See the babies sitting there all along the frond? I have no clue, but it looks like a big mother to me. LOL

Yes, my fern resembles that one. The little babies grow just like that on the fronds.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I never saw anything like that! Thanks - So the Austrailian, new zealand ferns will have pups like that ?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

No, that is a different fern, called a "Mother fern", if you google it, you can get more info.

OOaaahh...okay..I was confused .

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

So how many babies did you pluck.....to save, of course.....?????

Susie, did anything freeze last week?
I had a few leaf casulties - but no total losses...that was the worst one so far this winter for me.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Just leaf casualties here too. One spot in the garden, an area about 10 ft wide by 75 ft long is the only place that had damage. It was along the west fence.
Of all the damaged plants, my Goldfinger banana looks worst, but it will put out new leaves and be good as new by summer.

That's good- hopefully that's it for the year!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Oh no, its cold again. The temps fell 10 degrees in one hour! The wind is blowing like crazy. Only supposed to go to low 50's and maybe some rain.

I know dagnabit... It's because we've been moving gingers Susie... I got too cocky and planted the gingers.. Speaking of Gingers- I bought one today I'd never heard of ...It's a Black Ginger..it's very stricking.
I know I will be getting the frost cloths out tomorrow night...*sigh* I thought last weekend would be it...They started out with forecasting 50's - but here - they've been talking 38's and 41's...and near freezing tomorrow night..

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

A black ginger sounds pretty. My gingers I moved are sprouting, wonder if I should cover them with straw? If it keeps this cold business up, my shell gingers won't bloom this year. I didn't get flowers on them last year because of the danged snow.
I need to go check our forecast, it has not gotten to 50 yet, hovering around 46-48 with misting rain and wind. Brrrr......my toes are cold!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

aah..I have spent most of the morning tossing things back in the green house- The forecase is for 33F.. My shell gingers bloomed surprisingly after the snow last year. I had some starting to throw out a bloom until last weekends freeze. The gingers and the EEs survived last weekend..so Im leaving them alone- except I watered them pretty good - even with the rain-.

Yes..the black ginger is that blackish purple look. Never seen anything like it. That ones being safe harboured in the kitchen tonight. I also bought a Sea Onion...never heard of that one either..but it is interesting looking...I love the diversity of plants!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I haven't heard of a sea onion, I'll have to go look that one up.
