While the cat was away having his big Super Ball day

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

The mouse was up to her usual evil way!
But I had such fun!!! LOL. And I figured I have been so out of control this month, the cat can only hiss so hard so why not just go all the way. Hopefully he won't bite.

I have been wanting a Tasmanian Tree Fern and I wandered across a very pretty one that was too nice to walk on by. And it was a deal I thought for it had a trunk of about 2 feet

Luckily I had bought the coolest little round wagon thingie that fits down narrow paths and you can pull it behind you!

It was perfect for the 15 gallon pot that was a squat one. It was so heavy and had just been watered when I bought it. I couldn't very well ask my DH to sneak it into the back yard for me........

Then I went to HD to get some dirt. And what was there but a Rhapsis Lady Palm that wanted to come home with me. I have been looking at them but they are so $$ I have been displaying discipline, but this one was so perfect, I got it. It is a very full pot. Hiss Hiss Hiss

I love the stalks. I sure hope they do not get mites as easily as the other palms.

Oh, Kell, you've been up to shopping again! You do really find some good ones. With all the advice and help you give all of us DGers, being married, shopping, etc., when do you sleep?! LOL.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

oh to funny Kell

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Kell...I have Rhapsis inside...and every so often I take them out and hose them down.....helps with the mealies...and bugs. Imidocloprid is also an answer!!!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Some great finds,if I lived there I'd be following you around!!!!LOL
Even my lady palm gets brown tips, and it's in the greenhouse with humidity around 60%,and I mist it every morning and nite!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I am going to keep my Rhapsis inside too. I hosed it down when I got home. It is sitting in my courtyard. MY DH came home from his party just now, so I have to wait till he falls asleep to go get it. `

It has no brown ends, it looked the best of all I have seen for awhile now. I had to grab it when the grabbing was good. LOL Well, that is my story and I am sticking to it.

Tropicman, you would love it here!!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

LOL!Kell,I'd have to work 2 or maybe 3 jobs just to take care of my habit!!!!
Quitting smoking after 30 yrs is easier than trying to slow down on my plant wanting!!!LOL
Good thing I did,I couldn't afford to buy ciggerttes now!!!
Oh! Goodluck on trying to hide that big lady palm!!LOL
Thats why I buy the smallest I can find,I can say ole thats just a cutting I'm trying to root!!!LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL. Oh the stories we tell! Sometimes I reflect on why I have this need, but not for long. LOL It is dark out there. As long as I do not leave it till the morning he won't have a clue. Unless I put it in the living room. He would notice it in there. LOL

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Oh goodness, that reminds me, there are plants in my car I need to get out! I forgot all about them!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

You must have the best HD ever. We rarely see anyhting decent at the big boxes around here. Green with envy here.

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

I live just over the hill from Kell and I never find these great plants at my two H.D's in this area.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Kell, no wonder you need that narrow wagon, you must have to walk sideways to move around your garden. It must be absolutely jammed by now. I wish I had your HD.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Kell, you bad girl, you make me proud (tears of mischief trickling down my face)

stupid, stupid me. I bought a lady palm and planted it outside. Deader than a door knob! They are pricey here but I found one about 1/2 the size of yours, Kell, and it was less than $5. Everybody here grows them indoors, I don't know what in the world got into me. Well, I will find comfort in remembering I paid $5 and not $50.

The tasmanian tree fern is divine. I have Australian tree fern (cooperi) planted outside full shade. It gets pretty ratty in the heat of summer but it has grown taller and thicker, slowly but surely. I love the fiddle heads on it.

Kell, you have a dmail

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I have no room Liz, that is why I think I may be nuts. My husband is so good, but he thinks I am nuts too. My problem is I am an equal opportunity lusting lover. I can get fixated on any or every plant known!

Oh Vossner what a deal you got. Now you need to find another one for $5. I won't even say what this one cost. They must be slow growers to command such a price. The pots are so full though, it makes me think they are fast to grow.

Susie what did you get?? You always get the best things.

Patricia, the HD in Pleasanton has lots of the Rhapsis palms. I was there last week drooling. But at HD you have to buy them quick before they kill them off.

Have you been to Armstong? It is becoming my favorite nursery around here. I got a huge Australian tree fern from there a few weeks ago. It was such a good price for such a huge size I grabbed it. Then when I went back last week to get a 60 in tree rose, they had smaller ones for much more. So I asked about the high price and they said the one I got was mismarked. It was $69 and should have been $169. LOL!! What a deal.

The Tasmanian tree fern I got yesterday was not from HD but from Evergreen Nursery. He usually has a nice selection of larger tree ferns. I always am looking at them. Th eowner is also so nice.

Vossner, the Tasmanian Tree fern is supposeldy more forgiving than the Australian one. So I had to have both. LOL

This is the Australian one I got a few weeks ago for only $69. A deal!!

KelL, I got angelonia, salvia leucantha, a celeste fig and calla lilies(of course). The fig is hidden now behind a huge scheffleria tree( 6ft tall, I had it laid down in the floor board of my Explorer). I guess I could tell him the little cutting I had started had a sudden growth spurt(honest sweetie, it was that rabbit poo I put on it that made it grow so fast)

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

what kinda callas, Cala?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

They have spotted leaves and yellow flowers.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Susie,
That rabbit wouldn't happen to be named Harvey by any chance!!!!LOL
Boy!I don't feel so bad after hearing your all stories!!!
Kell I've tried both those ferns, killed them both deader than a doornail!!!
Looked great for a couple months then just dropped dead!!!
Yours look great!
I heard you should water them with distilled water,I think it must have been my well water, hard water, too much iron!!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

What made you hot to get a fig?? Looks like a good one though.
http://www.paradisenursery.com/celeste.html
I love them with hot goat cheese or with pear and balsamic vinegar.

When I moved here we had a big calimyrna fig tree. What a mess, the flies love figs!!! And when you break even a leaf off it puts out this milky stuff that made me rash so badly!!! I decied I woudl buy a few figs each week at the farmers' market when they are in season.

2 or 3 years ago I planted a few angelonia when Liz was hot for them, but they died over winter. And the colored calla lilies do not even come up here. I planted over 100 of them a couple of years ago and not one came up!! Woe was me. Yet the big whites are weeds here. go figure!1

Tropicman, well if they need distilled water I just wasted all my money! I will do lots for my plants but I am not lugging distilled water out there all the time. Did you water the trunk well all the time? There are roots in there and they need to be watered.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Whoah, nice looking fern! But I like the cart you are carrying it in!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

WOW Sue. You are back!!! Yes that cart is going to get a lot of use. I can put all sorts of things in it and zip it to the back yard easily. I started with a red wagon years ago, then went to a wheel barrow. Then got a black plastic 4 wheel garden cart. All are cumbersome to get down my little paths. This just whips on down and around. I just found them at Orchards last week. Do have an Orchards down your way?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Kell, I love figs and it was cheap, 2 gallon pot for $6. I looked for some of the large white callas(my favorites) but I couldn't find any anywhere.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh I bet I can find some bubs for you. I wonder if they sell them in fall though. I do not recall seeing them with the spring bulbs recently. I may have finally dug all mine out. I will look around. They kept coming back. I have a fancy spotted one from Ada though.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I have an Orchards 5 min. away, as soon as I am done with all my work projects, (yeah right) I will have to go take a look see.
Oh boy, are we having spring time this week!!!! 70's, yeah haw!

I would love to get a zant. Hercules, but I guess those are like the holy grail of callas. I would really love one of those big boys!

That was a bargain on celeste fig. That variety is top rated for our area.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I have fern envy Kell! As they say...good on ya mate! My australian fern is back in the dirt- trying to recover his former size from last summer!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Roots in the trunk???
Just when you think your too old to learn something new!!!
Nobody told me!!!
Never read that before!!!
And I visit with a lady from down under everyday!!!
Thanks Kell
I might try one again,if I ever hit the lotto again!!!

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Rare Secret garden has the Tasmanian Tree fern for 19.95 on e-Bay. I have ordered from him several time and gotten great plants

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Hey Rj, you were the one that started me noticing these tree ferns everywhere I go. I have a few right on my block. People plant them under their roof overhangs around here and I bet few water them much less their trunks.

I killed one too Tropicman years ago! The trunk sure doesn't look like roots does it?
"The trunk is actually a bundle of roots and this should be watered daily in dry weather for maximum growth. The centre of the crown forms a well which can be filled from a hose and allowed to overflow and run down the trunk."
FROM:

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Thanks Donna
Kell,I might try again, now that I know the secret!

Concord, CA(Zone 9a)

You guys are my kind of people. I have never seen a plant I don't want. I find myself leaving work early or skipping lunch to go by HD (there are 3 HD on my way home, sort of), Orchards, Annies annuals, and even Walmart just to look and see whats in. One day I'm addicted to cannas the next its ginger or ferns or anything that catches my eye. Right now I want a philodendron pink princess and every burg I can get my hands on of course I have never grown burgs before(lol).
Kell you must have the best HD in N.Ca. I have 3 Richmond, Pinole, Concord and never find the plants you do.
My DH lets me have plants and I let him have car parts for whatever he's restoring so it works. I do hide plants everywhere and when he asks I just say I've had it forever. I have a greenhouse that more than full. Can't wait to move some out and plant in the ground.
I am sort of new to tropicals and have all sort of dumb questions and this forum is a giant help. Thanks for the information and chuckles.
Linda

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

You are me, Linda!! My only ambition in life is to go to every HD ever built. I drive my husband nuts where ever we go when we pass a HD. And he rarely stops. Breaks my heart.

The best one I think is the one in San Rafael. It is huge. I like the one San Ramon also!

Wait till Lowes gets near you. We have 2 here and I have to stop in there now too.

I have been going to tons of HD this last month hunting for a mini rose I found at one just as they put them out. It is the most beautiful rose. I want to put them around my ex pond. The only trouble is I am broke from looking even though I have yet to find them again.

I need this rose.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I am fickle too, I flit from one plant to another, wanting them all though but having no room for any.

So how much will you give me Linda to know where to find this size Princess Philodendron for $15???

Thumbnail by Kell
Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Oh you tease Kell!! You must tell her!
I LOVE mine and it is doing real good, adding new leaves. I am happy at how easy it seems to be.

Concord, CA(Zone 9a)

Kell
How about if I beg and plead? Maybe shed a tear or 2. They are so beautiful. Calif_Sue is right you should tell me.

Thanks for the tips on HD both are fairly close to me. Maybe if I leave work early and don't tell anyone where I'm going, oh never mind I'll just get busted.

I was just looking and saw a corkscrew vine now I want that also and a red jade vine and ect. The more I look the more I want. My husband thinks I'm nuts too but my kids just tell me I'm weird.
They may be right. Think I'll go look for the closest Lowes
Linda

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I only wish I could grow mine as tall as they get there! Eve of the house eh?? hmmm..now theres an idea.

Im the same way...always finding new plants to fall in love with. The latest is clerodendrums, and although I have not yet seen a full grown plant except in pictures - Tecoma Stans- I bought some seeds and they are merrily popping up in my nifty seed kit. Philodendrums have really been catching my eye lately too..

We are suppose to get pretty cold this weekend. Guess winter had to come sometime. As long is only lasts a day- I can handle it..but can the plants? I planted the Beaumontia grandiflora in the new front landscaping last week. It is doing pretty good- but guess I better cover it up -- suppose to get to 31F- although we are always about 5 degrees warmer in the down town area.

Rj

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

They are saying mid 30's to 43 here Saturday night. I'm glad you mentioned the beaumontia, I need to cover mine.
The tacoma stans make small trees here and bloom almost year round. I love them, they're such a cheery yellow, they brighten up the garden.
