Fast draining soil, hmmm, not here in the San Jose Bay Area. Clay. But there are always pots right Kell?!
Guess what I bought?? I am doing the hula!!
You could plant them in a hole with sand in the bottom...and then lots of rocks, gravel, cinder(black) and orchid bark in the soil.
Kell, I have two in the ground. Nothing bothers them. I have lava rock stuff for mulch in the area, I think that cuts down on slugs and snails.
I bought one today while shopping with Cheryl, it is so dark it is almost black, no pink on it at all.
No PINK?? What kind of plant is that? LOL
It's an accent plant.
I have three of these. At first I thought the dgs were calling them
gingers. Mine has big leaves one them. Dont see too many of these on the market. I cant recall where I got the first one but must have been at a yard sale. But those colors in the first three on the thread is really beautiful They grow them in full sun here a lot of times.,
I have some of the big ones that I would trade but how to get them in a box is something else. I just cut them off and stick them in the soil in a outdoor room off our masterbedroom and they root very fast. If anyone wants one you can send the postage for a flat rate box and I will trade for another one of a different color. Also these bloom. or I can send a cutting of a smaller part of the plant. the leaves are about 14 in long and round and its flowering right now. has pink spickes. Not sure if it smells or not. It ususally blooms in the winter here in January. Grows in part sun and some shade. Sun brings out the color and yes the slugs eat on it and i have had a few mites or some other bug but mostly they leave the along. Fran
What kind of accent plant is that with no PINK???
Fran, sounds like they love it where you live. The jury is still out here.
Kell...want me to send you some so you can try them out in the ground?
Kell, you need other colors to make the pinks stand out.
And then there is my orange garden.......purple and orange go well together but not pink and orange, lol.
Kell, I don't know how to make this into a hyperlink, but type this in and you'll see lots of pics of ti plants. Looks like you got really good buys!

They seem kinda pricey....?
Ti plants are beautiful. I had one in Lakeland, FL that grew to be HUGE without any pampering at all. It got full sun and plenty of clorine water (lol) because it was by the pool. The more I ignored it, the prettier it got.... I only occassionally pruned it to keep it from taking over the diving board. I don't know how it would do as a house plant but I'm sure people 'smarter than me' could do it. I don't have much luck with house plants.
I use them a lot here for eye catching spots of color. DH built a long narrow flower bed and in it we planted a mess of Ti...with contrasting colors and textures of the leaves...will take a photo and post it. He calls it his Ti Mosaic. We never touch it except to feed it occasionally and cut some back that get too high. They are bald for a short time and soon the new growth comes back and they are marching right along. I use the leaves in flower arrangements too.
Yes, definitely pricey on Aloha Tropicals. Just liked the link to show some different plants.
Oh Carol, post pictures!! I am going to be first in line to get some from you as soon as your Ti website is up. I just love all the colors on these.
Carol, I love it! Gosh, I wish I could see your whole garden......sigh........maybe someday.
Be sure to let me know just before you come so I can weed!!!
It IS gorgeous,Kell...a very very slow grower so don't get impatient. But I like the slow ones....you can plant around them and not have a monster in a couple of months!!!
Carol
Kell, you find the neatest plants. I wish our nurseries would have a better selection of plants.
Kell that pink phormium, is that the one named Jester? If it is, which nursery did you find it at. I need one more of that one, and I can't for the life of me remember where I bought the first one.
Oh Patricia, the pics in this thread are cordylines, Ti plants.
The last time I saw Jester it was at Navlets in Fremont. They had a few. They called it Redheart though. I notice several nurseries are calling Jester that now. So you like them now?? Remember last year I was telling you how great they were and you felt they were just freeway plants??
Goo dit isd a slow one Carol.
Ada, there are too many neat pants here!! I got this begonia yesterday also!
Ohhh, where you find that one? Love it!
Isn't it too cool Sue? It was at Orchard Nursery & Florist in Lafayette. They only had this one and it was a ridiculous price. But I have been looking at begonias on ebay and decided to bite the bullet.
.
That is one nursery I haven't been to, I had heard that the prices were a bit steep, probably considering it's location.
The couple of begonias that I bought at the Oakland nursery are doing so well in my house, blooming off and on ever since I got them, I want more, they are so neat.
Ok, this is the tropical forum, back on topic. I think I lost just a few plants, probably from too much rain, I neglected to put the potted ones under the eaves. But I may be surprised and have them return after all, it happened before.
I have been so happy with the weather this last week. My back yard is still mud though. I hear it may rain later in week again!! ICK!! Were the plants favorites?
I love Orchards, but it is very expensive. They have a great gift and florist shop. These were in there not in the nursery.
One was the Alocasia Lutea I got from Enid. I haven't really checked to see what's below the soil yet.
I do to do some major cleanup out there and take an assesment of what needs to go and what did fine. Too much work inside for me lately, I need some serious time outside.
Mine from Enid also died a terrible death. I am over my ear fling I do believe.
Unfortunately alocasias can't handle wet feet, the rot very quickly. I've had them for years, but this year I left for a weekend, and it rained and filled their large pots. 2 days of soaking is all it took to kill them. Very sad....I think I'll stick more with my colocasias which can take a great deal of water.
Had a freeze for the past 2 nights, so not sure what I'll find out there this morning. I tried to bring everything in, but my bananas, papayas, etc, that are in ground, I'm sure took a hit.
Wow those are pretty! Can I move to Hawaii? Please...
Those are great. I am going to try propagating thanks for the info. I would be happy to share with you the secrets of propagating crab grass, we are famous for it in Houston, LOL.
But of course. LOL
OK, I have been drooling over these photos for too long now. They are few and far between around here, can anybody recommend a good online source for cordylines?
Either that or Kell will have to turn into a plant broker; she finds all the good ones. LOL
Kiwi is a lovely miniature. She does not grow FAST which makes her perfect for more permanent plantings or arrangements in a pot. Shade or filtered sun with those whiteish or creamy stripes.
Carol
I am about to place a large order with Carol here
http://www.bigislandgrowers.com/products/catalog_list.php?g=35
The shipping was high so I checked with Carol and she said she would fix it, I guess it is a program error.
I want one of just about all of them. LOL They all look so good.
