Very nice. I have a friend in Hawaii who had a nice collection of them also Dr Brown I visited a few years ago in Florida he wrote a wonderful book with great pictures of them. He had quite a few nice forms as well. I got a very nice pastel colored form from a freind a few years ago. It was extremely rare but I think it has sense been put into TC and will soon be easy to find. It is manly a light pink and blue color.

Are those the variegated gingers or cordylines? They are all gorgeous. I can't believe you bought JUST ONE. LOL

in Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Kell, You must be a really strong women to walk away with only one. LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Gosh, I am going to run back and get the pastel one. I have no clue what I was thinking!!! I must have had rain stroke. LOL. Thanks for bringing me back to my senses.

I was looking again online last night and to buy just cuttings of the stalk, it would cost me more than to buy these. I need to explain this to my DH how he is saving so much money because I bought these.

The Red Sister was a lot like the one I bought at Home Depot last week for half the price. So I really only need Pastel now. LOL

Susie, do they grow well where you are? Do they have them in nurseries?

My HD find. 2 gallon can.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Kell, yes they have a few here, mostly the one like you got at HD. I have two of those. They do well in part shade for me.

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Of course you have to go back and get "Pastel"! After all, it would fit perfectly in your PINK garden!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Kell...they are gorgeous!!!! Tonight I will put some pics up....I took a bunch the other day, but haven't sized them yet. For a carefree spot of rich color they are perfect!!!!

Carol

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Silly me...I had already sized them....so here are some planted on the property. This one is Lipstick.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

This tall one is a seedling...and the sun thru the leaves makes it look like it is on fire. The smaller bushy Ti to the right are Olaa Beauty.

This is one I use for backgrounds in plantings as they grow really tall and full. Hawaiian Boy

The Orange/Rust colors in this one, Orange Sister, is almost unique to this very old Ti....

Boy, they really liven up a border. The sun loves to play witheir colors, I see. Lipstick is calling my name. LOL

THANKS Carol!!! All are just stunning. Is that seedling from you cross pollinating??

I understand these can be easily grown from a stem section. I am wondering whether to cut mine back and try that since they were shredded last year by hurricane Wilma and don't look very nice. Anyone have experience with growing these from stem cuttings?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Carol does! She even sells Ti plants which are 10 inch stem cuttings, no roots. I have her online site on my to buy list now for spring. Though it may be spring now, I can't decide.

Carol, what is the best way to grow these from cuttings? I have 3 small ones under lights I got from ebay which have not died but have not budged either.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

o u t s t a n d i n g. I have one that I bought last fall, can't remember name out, planted inground, part sun. It's a little ratty right now, hope it recuperates. Compared to y'all's beauties, mine rates very very very low. hee hee.

edited to correct myself. not planted inground, rather buried in a pot for easy retrieval in case of cold temps

Kell and Dutchlady1 - Ti grow very much like Brugs....but they are a bit slower.

1. lay the cut stem (trunk) horizontally on the soil and push it in to reach about half way up. Soil should be loose...I plant them in lava cinders with some peatmoss and orchid bark. Drainage is VERY important. All of those rings around the stem are growing points for roots/eyes-shoots. They will appear...fear not. Keep them warm.

2. stick the cut stem about 1-2" into the soil/potting mix. You definitely will get one stem growing out of the top....sometimes more.

The smallest I ever cut is 4". Horizontally can be slower, but you get multiple plants.

If you have a Top with all the leaves, you need about 3" below the leaf growth to stick into the ground.

Slug LOVE young Ti...so take precautions with alum. strips around the trunks.

Alas...that seedling just appeared for someone who had the wit to save it. Ti seeds are seldom very viable and produce uglies (I am told) ----. I love to cut the 'flowers'...they make very interesting arrangements with their purple, red, pink stems...

MOST of the Ti with cream in the leaves like shade better than sun...some of the deeper red leaves can grow in the sun, as well as the all green ones. Filtered sun works great for all of them...even my tender ones that get an hour or two of early or late sun don't gripe about it.

Here is my baby, planted in part sun, inground. I do hope new leaves soon grow over the ugly ones

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Looks like it got cold or dry. No worries... You might want to give it more shade.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Thanks for all the info, Carol. I really appreciate it!!

Gee Vossner, yours lived all winter in zone 9A outside with no protection? Must be tougher than I thought.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Oh my, I need to move to Hawaii! sigh...
So Kell, will I have to sell several of my prized daylilies to afford one of those in the first pic? Need to know this before I head over the hill to take a tour of Armstrongs. And only plant in shade right?

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

I love Exotica, too!

I've tried a few of these indoors....they just plain don't like it there!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Sue. I t was $23 in a 2 gallon pot but listen. I was at Walmart the other day and they had this one also!! I bet much cheaper; I coudldn't find a price on it. . Now I will say it was half dead but I notice HD is carrying some different ones for $12, the same size or bigger. So this is my take, a local grower must be growing these and I bet we will gets lots of kinds by summer around here. In your heat it probably will only want early morning sun, but here I bet it can take more.

Oh Nan, too bad. I have high hopes for mine but watch me kill them. They get mites so easily!!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Mites? Here the only pest is slugs...I will bet you can keep them clean with good aircirculation and lots of water. By the way....they LOVE water and fast draining soil.
