Nice plants ! Your so sweet Nan !

Nan,

That looks just like the one that I had. That would be really sweet of you to send me some cuttings. It is a hard plant to find but it sure is a beauty.

Thanks,
Jesse

I *thought* that was the one you were speaking of, Jesse, as I've never seen it elsewhere either, and you described it exactly as I would have!

I got mine at the HD nearest me (about 70 miles....can you tell we live 'in the sticks', lol!?) about 3 years ago, and as I said, I've had trouble with it...almost lost it, but thank goodness it was summertime and I put it outdoors and pinned the longest stems onto the soil.....it's hanging in there so far, so if I am able to maintain it until then, I'll send you a few cuttings.

I've ordered Dischidia cuttings from Cloud Jungle before, so I can recommend ordering from them, just in case you're so inclined (and if my plant doesn't survive for cuttings!)

Nan,

I had gotten mine at HD or Lowe's over a year ago. It was so beautiful and getting so big but had not bloomed yet. The first two times I went to CA it did okay but the last time we were gone so long and it died. I tried to save it like some of the others by cutting it all the way down to the soil and watered it but it was just too dry I guess. I sure wish I had one like it again. But I hope to get one again and maybe this time it will bloom. I had one of the other columneas that I think I got at the same time and it bloomed, even though it was sort of scrawney looking but I lost it too. Here is a post that I wrote about it before it died. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/488257/ Some how this year if I travel I have to figure out how to water all of my plants.

Ooohh...that one's lovely, too, Jesse!
And one I've not seen 'in person', but I wonder if that's the one that Michigan Bulb used to sell as 'Dancing Dolphin' vine....I've heard people mention that before.

I guess some of these gesneriads are quite sensitive about their watering needs.....that one I mentioned (that you lost and I almost lost) in particular seems to be *very* sensitive to drying out.....I think that's where I went wrong....I'd also read that it needs rather 'cool' conditions and it was in a warm part of my house.....I've tried to correct both of those conditions since bringing it indoors this past fall, and it does seem to be doing better, as long as I can remember not to under-water again!

Nan,

Right now Michigan bulb has their Dancing Dolphin Vine on sale for $3.99. I want to order one but they have such a bad reputation in the Garden Watchdog so I'm not sure whether I should order it or not. But it is not a bad price so I might just risk it. They have one other thing that I want too but I'm sill sort of afraid to order from them. I just wanted to let you know about the Dancing Dolphin Vine in case you were interested. Here is the URL for it: http://michiganbulb.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_68593_A_Dancing+Dolphin+Vine_E_

Hey, Jesse, thanks for that 'heads up'.

I've had both good and bad experiences with MB.....if the shipping is low, I'd go for it.

I'll check into the shipping prices later....gotta go do my grocery shopping....see you Monday!

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

The shipping on my whole order was only $7.71 I think so that was not too bad. I am just hoping that they send everything and it is in good shape. I purposefully used my DH credit card since he is a pro at getting things that he wants from companies like this. So if they mess up the order, it is up to him to fix it. LOL

I see this is an old thread, but on the off chance that anyone is still interested... I purchased 3 "Dancing Dolphin Vines" from Michigan Bulb (before I read of their reputation) mid-Jan 2005. The box was so small! When I opened it, the plants were very, very tiny. Less than 3 inches. Nonetheless, I planted all three and kept one, gave one to my Mom and one to my sister. Their vines struggled. They would grow and then not grow. Finally, after about 8 months they just croaked and never flowered. They didn't do anything different than I did and I potted them, so the growing medium was the same. Mine grew like crazy. It's quite large a year later and at one point had over 40 blooms. The flowers are quite large for the size of the plant. They are about 2 1/2 inches long. It bloomed for the first time in July 06 and has bloomed twice since then. I'm pretty happy with the way mine turned out and if it gets to the size of that plant pictured up thread, I'd be ecstatic!

Very interesting. I am looking for some companion plants for my avs. This looks like a real possibility.
