Unknown Lipstick Plant

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I am posting this here since it is a Gesneriad, the same family as the AVs. I know that you all know about more than just the AVs so I wanted to see what you think about this plant. It is called Lipstick "Rasta". I have not been able to find anything about it online and was just wandering if any of you had ever seen one. What caught my eye is that as it grows longer and longer, the leaves start to curve around making it look similar to a rope hoya. That is what really got my attention. Anyway, I was just hoping that some of you might know something about it since it is a Gesneriad. Thanks so much.

Jesse, do you know if it came from the grower that uses 'angel's' as their name.

It does look like hindu rope hoya! Very cool.

Oh, begoniacrazii, to answer your question about angel being a part of the title, it is an Exotic Angel plant. They have the hardest time getting thier name tags right. I have written to them, answered their surveys, and anything else that I know to so do get them to get their name tags right but they have not responed. And they have not updated their website in over 2 yrs. So who knows what they will do next. But at least the plant has been found online, thanks to Rose, on another site, other than Exotic Angel. http://www.hobbyodlaren.com/aesrasta.html

om gosh...exotic angels are the hermann nursery in apopka fl...i gave lorry and allison's pieces of their lipstick plant...one is named "mona lisa"...aeschynanthus radicens...comes from the himalayas....lol....that is the exact plant cuttings i gave to them...it is just listed as the "lipstick" plant...the "mona lisa" mentioned above has the ROUND LEAVES ABOUT SIZE OF QUARTER...it is very easy to root

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

jesse interested to know how much you paid for your 8inch hanging pot of that?

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I paid more than I usually like to pay. I paid $14.95 which is a whole lot for me. I usually buy a really nice expensive plant every few months. This was something that was really appealling to me since I do have a rope hoya and I thought they would look good together. And I buy one really nice book maybe once a year. That way I can build up my collection of both books and plants without going broke.

JesseK

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

well jesse that's not too much..as ;you literally can make 100's of plants from that..and the more you cut it off..the more you'll get....very easy to root....the angel series has lots of tropical plants including the hoya....hermann nurseries are one of the largest in the world....when mr hermann came to u.s...he had nothing..and started as a hobby...now several acres of greenhouses...amazing..

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Wow, that is amazing. I do love his Exotic Angel plants but I wish he would get his name tags correct. Most of his plants are always in good condition and are really pretty. I will keep buying from him, even though I wish he would get his tags straight. He does have some beautiful plants.

I have a lipstick plant that fell over and two branches broke off. How do I propigate that?

I also had one last year that was really strange looking and it was my favorite plant. But my trip to CA killed it. I will post a picture of it here to see if anyone else knows what it might be. I know that it is in the lipstick family but not sure which one.

well that one is another variation..the mona lisa one i mentioned is more round leaf..but maybe same family....i just put the pieces in some soiless mix (i use fine vermiculite) put plastic bag over and it roots very quickly..usually under 2 weeks...depending on humidity with the covering on it..

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I have not been able to find it since mine died last year. Our Lowe's and Home Depot get in a really nice shipment but if you are not there on the day that they come in, everything gets picked over and only the basic types of plants are left. I was so happy that I was there the other day when I got my Aeschynanthus 'rasta'. It was the only one in the whole shipment. I will try what you said and see if I can save those pieces of my other Lipstick plant. Thanks for the advice.

I have a fetish for the Hederas offered by Angel plants. They are all winter hardy, as they are at least eleven times better outdoors. And they are so darned unusual.

All of my EA plants have been lovely, mismarked, but lovely.

The hoya I bought (in Kentucky, they don't hav EA out here on the Left coast) were nice, but you could feel the collective 'eyes rolling' in the hoya forum when I posted them. Seems that they hear it all the time.

Denver, CO

I mentioned "true-to-nameness" in a survey for EA!

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

when you see EA's place...hermaanns nursery..apopka...it is so huge that i can imagine some slip up...jesse after our message last night i concluded that your second plant is what i mentioned as the MOna Lisa...and , yes, so easy to plant...Kenton..the Hederas huh?...lots of diffrent ones here...their WAFFLE plant (purple) is really neat...but PLEASE..don't get me started getting any other plants...although they have some that look like they should be episcias...but aren't....

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Bob, I bought the purple waffle! I love it! I have already started babies from it. It's a trooper. I let it dry out and it looked like wilted lettuce and then I placed it in a container of warm water and it bounced right back! good little house plant!

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

laurie..those waffles are really nice...i do like the rex begonia E.A. has as well
....jesse..here's the pics of our lipstick plant i just took...i'm sure you have the mona lisa like i have..here's the pics of the mona lisa

Jesse your plants are so beautiful ! Do you have windows to hang those big beauties Bob yours are sensational too :))

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Mine was not a Mona Lisa. Mine had tiny little leaves and each leaf was varigated green. Inside the oval shape leaf was a bright green surrounded by a darker green. All of the leaves were like that and they were very very small. Here is a photo of what they looked like up close.

very pretty ~

uh oh, I might need one of those... Thanks Jesse! love the variegation!

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

It sure was a beauty, my pride and joy. But when we got back from CA it was too far gone to save. I tried cutting it back and watering it but I could not save it. And it is the only one that I have ever seen. I would really love to have one like that again.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

jesse were the blossoms like i have pic above?

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I am not sure because it had died before it got chance to blossum. I was just heartbroken. It was one of my favorites since it was so different from anything that I had ever seen. So I'm not sure about the blossums.

Jesse, have you ever gone through the Gessie sticky gallery web sites? I wandered around today trying to find a photo of yours. But then got sidetracked (wow, there's something new! LOL) just a thought..you might find it.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

jesse..well a suggestion is to contact the Hermann Nursery in Apopka Fl...they are the growers of your plant...and all of the Exotic Angel line...do a google and see what you can find

No, none of those are it but getting pretty close. The leaves on mine were not fuzzy or hairy like some of the other lipstick plants. They were sort of just plain, except for the interesting color scheme. As beautiful as this plant is, it looks like there would be a lot of them around. They are so beautiful. I am thinking of either calling or emailing exotic angle to see if they know since they were the ones that were selling it. Thanks for all of your help so far. I really do appreciate all the help that you have given me so far.

jess i ID'D yours in another thread...look for it....bob

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I have finally ID'd this plant and it is a Columnea Cascading Beauty and can be found here. This is identical to the one that I had. http://www.gesneriads.ca/colum188.htm I am so glad that I found it. Now I need to buy one. I will probably never be able to buy one as large as the one that I had, but a small one is only $6.50 so that is not too bad.

Jesse

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh my goodness Jesse beautiful plant ! It's better to get small anyways it will adjust to your home enviroment easier ! Plus I bet it grows fast. WOW

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Wow....Jesse...that is a *fabulous* plant and I don't blame you a bit for splurging on it!!

I think I've seen that one (really small plants, though) on ebay listed as 'Curly Lipstick Plant'.....I had one for a short while and it bit the dust....I don't think it was very well rooted when I bought it, though.

I think I have the *other* plant you mentioned that you lost, but I've had trouble with it.....I'm thinking that maybe I'd let it get too dry.

I was thinking (had to do a lot of research too, and I, too, have taken their survey and let them know how I felt about their tags and no-names, even though their plants are fantastic!) that it looked like the one shown here, Columnea Broget Stavanger....but I've seen other photos of plants with this name that look like they have *white* variegation rather than the light green.....

http://www.cloudjungle.com/eshop/product.asp?intProdID=707

That's the one, isn't it?

If so....and *if* mine lives that long (lol!) I can send a few cuttings when I send you that Bloodleaf banana pup.
