Pansy Violet and Violetta Forum?

Dave

I don't know how much interest there would be in this subject but there are a lot of people growing something Violaceae out there and many threads with mentions of Viola out in the forums. Despite Viola being a well grown genus there are some more complicated issues (and no I'm not going to try and address the differences between pansys, violets and violettas again LOL) and is a large genus that can be found almost world over as well as thousands of cultivars.

Is there anybody else who is interested in seeing this kind of forum?

ME!!!!! Sweet little wild violets were my favorite childhood flower and I fell in love with the "antique shades" pansies the first time I laid eyes on 'em in a Park Seed catalog 20 years ago. Who can't help but smile when you lay winter-weary eyes on a perky little Johnny-jump-up in early spring?

: P You KNOW I'm interested!!

Me, too!! I have been trying to grow Viola 'Etain' for 2 years now. It is beautiful and has a wonderful scent. In the process of researching it I have discovered many beautiful plants that I would like to grow. So count me in.

I'd love to visit about violaceae, but I'm afraid I'd be asking Baa to explain the differences for me again!

Violas grow so well here that I grow lots and lots of them. I'm too cheap to buy plants, so I grow them from seed. Maybe some day I'll purchase some of the wonderful fragrant ones like Etain. I also have several types of our local violets now, some from the mountains here. I love them all!

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Me too! It's not the newewst chic thing, but I don't know anyone who doesn't love a good pansy.

Violas are such self-seeders and cross pollinators that they bring me such nice surprises every spring!

I think I'm #9. Sign m up. There is a lot I'd like to learn about this plant group.

I too am interested. I have been trying without very much success to grow violas from seed.

Thanks everyone for your support :)

Rutholive, have you been excluding light from the Viola seed?

Count me in too! I have common violets, downy yellow violets, johnny-jump-ups, and just ordered some viola 'Etain'. --Ginny

I am all for this ideas too :) I have been trying to grow pansies from seed.
Baa, what is the difference?? LOL Really I don't know, and would like to

Hahaha! I'm not even going to contemplate another attempt right now.

Here's the thread where I made my attempt at making it conscise but please bear in mind the date, a lot could have changed by now with the DNA testing and the fact it is very generalized. I refuse to be held responsible for errors and omissions, the thread (below) should be treated with a big pinch of salt ;)

Warning! You are now entering Baas Folly Zone! *G*

Baa , forgot which thread I was reading, I followed the directions on the seed packet, which came from T & M. As I remember the seeds germinated well, but lost them after transplanting. Think I mixed up a too rich mixture for seedlings. So will be more careful from now own.

Even if there's not a forum created, here's a wonderful site from the UK ((((Baa)))), that identifies some of the oldest of the viola species - such a smile it brought to my face today during this bitter weather we're having.
