I have never used the pretreatment soak, Mary. I know the PH is supposed to be off, but I have never had a problem. My seedlings are fat and sassy!

Corte Madera, CA

kell, the first time i soaked it in that pretreatment schtuff, but been too lazy to do it again. my seedlings are not so bad.

Insect Spray: In one gallon water stir 8 ounces (one cup) refined white sugar and 5 to 8 ounces of 3% H202.>>>>

Kell, I do NOT know, but I suspect the sugar is to get the attention of the insects (for a lethal cocktail). I had a thrip problem after Rita blew them into Arky, via OK, and my guru told the to use a concoction that included Code Red Mountain Dew, to draw the thrips to the Thiodan. Work so unbelieving quick that I could not believe my eyes and the guru told me that the mixture did NOT work well without the Code Red. Who knew??!! Whew.

Except we are not giving it a lethal cocktail like you did to the thrips. We are just spraying it the leaves with H2O2. Seems like a lot of sugar too! I wonder if they get sticky.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Kell, if it is an insect spray, wouldn't lethal be the purpose? Maybe sticky is to hold them while the H202 does its work. Hey, I don't have a clue and, yes, my word, it seems like a ton of sugar, and risky in the event the concoction didn't kill them, they would be stuck on the plant, ready to eat, huh??

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL. And the ants would come. So who should try it first, Sherry? You or me??

Corte Madera, CA

do we have a volunteer?

Corte Madera, CA

whew. ok, i did it. but i also ordered a fresh shipment of rockwool. RW is just way too easy and doesn't take up much room.

i had a little fun.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

The main reason I like rockwool is because it works and the second reason is because if it tips over, there is no mess, which means lots to me, I hate soil spilled in the house...

Corte Madera, CA

right on, sherry. when i did this experiment earlier today, i was already saying that, too! no mess with RW.

i'm very low tech and i like the way i can put RW with seeds in ziplocs and place them on the window sill.

i learned my lesson.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Kell loves the plastic bags, she blows hers up and, I think, and ties them (I cannot swear that is correct) and, obviously, it works well for her. I cannot find the right bags, I tried ziplock / Hefty but neither worked, they can be blown up, but they won't stay, and kell's do. So, I use the tinfoil loaf pans, with plastic tops and they look like little green houses. Gretchen is the one that suggested the pans, and I have a window ledge, with southern exposure, that holds 8, with 24 seeds in each pan, in rockwool, and I can squeeze in more if needed.
No big deal if they get knocked off and I can watch their progress. Yesterday, I planted a loaf pan of zinnias, Envy, and put any number in one tiny cute, I hope they sprout...

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I bought the bags at a bag store online. I got about 1000, I am on my second box. I use them for cuttings also. I like them because I can leave the seedlings in there for awhile if I am lazy and they can grow as tall as they want to.

They do not stay up for me either Sherry, after a few days they collapse. It doesn't matter. But I just pull them staight up when I want to look and see how they are doing and they stay up a few more days. .

Wow, that makes me tired, kell, just visualizing a thousand bags and now you are on the second thousand, so much work involved!! I'm liking my little loaf pan greenhouses better and better, I use them over and over too, I sterilize them in my dishwasher. Also, they have not come out with lotz more styles, types of tin foil pans with 'high' tops. I cut my rockwool to size and I like them more each time I use them, they are easy to store too. Just one good thing about this forum is, learning different ways to do the same thing.

Corte Madera, CA

kell, have you ordered stuff from ULINE? they have awesome things.

sherry, i guess part of the reason ziploc works for me is because i don't have many seeds to start.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I hate anything I have to wash and sterilize, etc etc. I am a lazy gardener, Sherry. That is why I love the plastic bags. I try to keep everything disposable if possible.

No Annapet, I got them at Associated Bag. http://www.associatedbag.com/default.asp
There are so many venders! I get the glassine envelopes too online and buy 1000 at a time! Now, they come in a tiny box. I love them so much for pollen collecting. I guess I have made long term commitments. LOL

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Yep, kell, normally I'd hate the sterilize part, but the size of these little loaf pans is very easy to work with, AND (this is big for me!), I can get them any place, even here in town, AND they aren't expensive, so I wouldn't have to take out a loan if I replaced them each time. Hey, that's what I intended to do, but they are so easy to store that I'm using them over and over. I really hate sterilizing in big pots on the range top, ugh, I would rather take a beating, and I'd never sterilize soil or other flower pots, which I very seldom use for brugs. I'm a lazy gardener too, kell, I spend more time than I should trying to figure out easier ways of doing stuff. I waste so much time, if I didn't, I'd have a show place. Oh, well.

Corte Madera, CA

another lazy gardener here. lol. the jiffy greenhouse was a lot of work for me already.

speaking of glassine envelopes, thanks again kell. i'm using the ones you sent me with the pollen and seeds today. jean pasko and candida double white are still blooming.

the foil loaf fans i use for no-drip on the shelves, sherry. i have a chrome shelf.

Sunset Beach, NC(Zone 8a)

Kell, duh! I didn't even think about potting up the ones that had grown too tall. Consider it a senior moment. But I got it done yesterday and all is well. Thanks!
Barbara

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Barb. Now you sound like me. The worst is when my DH discovers a duh- to-me deed. He gives me that look as if he is imagining how I will be in 10 years and it is not a pleasant thought for him. LOL

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Speaking of potting up and lazy, I will never pot up seedlings, after the first rockwool in a cup, ever again.and if I try to, please remind me that I swore off seedlings, rootings, etc, in pots. This year, first cup, and I'll let them get root bound in the cup, then plant them deep - worked like a charm last year...and it was an accident...

Corte Madera, CA

sherry, i'm with you on that one. i've noticed the difference of planted seedlings and the ones that graduated from 4", 1g, and 2 g pots.....etc.

from 4" and rose bands, they are going to be planted!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I agree that is the way to go if you are going to plant in the ground. I have decided I am anti planting in the ground though. They just get too big and messy. Plus I have 4 huge ones that need to get dug out and my DH has informed me he is retired from digging anymore plants out for the rest of his life.

Corte Madera, CA

lol, kell.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

hahahaha, tonight on Dancing with the Stars, one of the stars had a
'dinner' party and they toasted with, guess what, RED plastic cups, they must have gone to kell's to pick them up, lol!! I hope others from this forum saw the toast and recognized the red cups!!

Corte Madera, CA

hubby's aunt and uncle will probably want to watch that, and we'll catch it later. i'll keep my eyes peeled for kell's costco cups. i have to get those!

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Hahahaha, lol, careful, Moonglow, the dancers, in question, were 'children', and they were serving, in the red plastic cups. Costco??? If that's what kell has been using all this time, I've been on a different page, no wonder my seedlings weren't up to kell's zone CA!!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I just started some seeds in that kit. After the pellets were soaked, I tore open the top of the pellets then put the seeds in using the h202 and superthrive. That was on Tuesday..so will report progress. They are on a heating pad. I will remove ones that grow faster than the others.. I haven/t peaked at them today yet..
I wonder how often I should be adding water if any?
I was using baggies before - and this seem a bit more effecient... hope it works.
Rj

Corte Madera, CA

my son would love it then!

sherry, i'm almost 100% sure kell's are costco cups. i could be way off also...lol.

Corte Madera, CA

rj, we cross-posted.

oh, you are so tech-savvy. mine didn't get presoaked. no heating mat or h2o2 either. just a drop of superthrive mixed with the water to fluff the pellets.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I have run out of H2O2. I must go get more!! Esp after Sherry said her seeds germinated while soaking! I usually do not soak mine, but I will try!!

I just got my 2 heating pads from Parks, Rj. So I need to use one for 3 very special plumies I bought on eBay a few months ago which have not rooted yet but the other I will try on my brug seeds just to see..............

Yes, COSTCO's cheap, red cups. They are so inexpensive and disposable. Plus they are deeper than 4 inch pots. Brugs alway put out that long tap root fast.

I just turned on the dance show late. I love to watch them move it.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Is the store Costco or is the cup brand Costco?? I'm pretty sure we get the same red cups at Kroger...I thought I had a photo but those were terra cotta cups...we used to use the red cups for kid parties, until we got the Party Store, that has every thing in the entire world in paper...

Corte Madera, CA

hmmn, i have to check if kell doesn't get back to us. lol.

i haven't checked on the experiment. i'm hoping i'll forget about it and check on it one day and everything has sprouted.

i should though.

....

nothing yet.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

The styrofoam cups were so ugly, and tipped over so easy, but gave me a yard full of beautiful seedlings, that I think I'm going to use them again, maybe they are lucky!!

Ooooh, I love the dance show kell. I'm also addicted to American Idol, I LOVE all three judges, Randy and Simon, tho I tried to 'hate' Paula and have decided that the bad press last year was a publicity stunt, by the scorned loser, whatever, the judges are as much fun as the performers (all my grands watch and we text each other and email all week about it) and, real fav is Project Runway...I'm double dog addicted to it, it appeals to lots more of my addictions...

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Well, not so tech..Im using an old heating pad, the ones your suppose to put on your sore back....hehe.. I had no idea what I was doing - But it had that nifty bottom tray so I just poured water over the pellets and watched them get fat.. - I checked today and the morning glories are sprouted. Speaking of the lazy gardener...thats why I tore the tops of the pellets...To use the 3 seed program per pellet..:)
I put more water into it today...it seems like the water evaporates a bit more even witht he lid thant he baggies do. How often do you guys add water ?? I may give baggies another whirl.
You sure can tell your in a gardeners house when you walk in ... I have a leek growing in the kitchen in a little glass that I saved from the lettuce drawer - seed trays all over the kitchen into the living room..on the rail of the front porch where the older ones have graduated..hahaha....Its so much fun!!

Corte Madera, CA

oh, cool! you are so inventive and resourceful. i should start using my heat mat. i did buy one after all.

right on about a gardener's house. my folks cannot believe i caught the bug THIS BAD. my folks both love to garden, and growing up, i didn't show any interest. took 34 years. lol.

on my kitchen counter i have brug cuttings that have rooted. some branches fell during the last storm, and i just couldn't throw it away. perhaps another newbie would want a cutting...

have a great weekend, everyone!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

haha..yes..I cannot throw plants away...consequently...I have a back section of the garden - that have 15 feet of boards accross two saw horse-- full of potted plants. It was a good thing- When I started landscaping the new front flower beds today..I walked to the back yard..and hauled out stuff like I was walking out of a nursery!!..

(Mary) Poway, CA(Zone 10a)

I like these to store pollen in. You can even throw the whole anthers in there. No smearing in the mail system. A lot of the Lily people use them.

In my kitchen, you have to reach between Culebra rootings and a Susanne to turn on the light. Oh, well, they (my family and guests) catch on quickly, they used to have to walk puppies before they made it to the kitchen...
