Have a great day,

Merrimac, WI(Zone 4b)

I've been so busy this weekend I've missed a whole thread - again! (What's new!) DSIL and her DH are here visiting, and they brought along DS's new girlfriend! We also had friends over for supper last night and again tonight.

Hope everyone is well, or getting there!

Take care, all!

Morning everyone - what a load of gabbing went on yesterday...sheesh....and here I was cleaning...

DGS came over on Fri evening to work on a school project. Sat, DH was out in the barn, so I went out to see what he was doing and he had been working on the project himself for 2 hrs. I had to read him the riot act and tell him he was NOT to do the project - DGS was... DGS did come over and finish it and it turned out deligthful!! Now DH had a zillion of MY projects to get done, but those weren't important - pass the 2x4.

Grumpy DIL came over - she was OK. We went to the grocery store to pick up some odds and ends and they all stayed and had dinner with us. She NEVER cooks, and did ask for the recipe for the meat loaf I made - it is a never fail one and always turns out good. I continue to be on pins and needles with her - I never know when she will blow...plus we have little in common - doesn't like anything I do - she's only interested in belly dancing and having those stupid home parties (ugh) It's real hard to spend a day together as we run out of things to talk about.

My brother called me yesterday and never mentioned me 'house' sitting. We talked out our mom who is going thru some crazy times. He did say his wife was in a 'depression' - I think it is the problem of having to find someone else to kid sit. Oh well!! (thanks for giving me a backbone everyone!!)

Man, that is some pool!! We have a dog leg shaped one in our yard -been there 25 yrs. I want to fill it in. We need a new fence etc. Just a money pit to us now, but the boys have asked that we keep it open for the grandkids (they better get going on producing them then!!)

FC - I'm impressed with your picture posting- I still cannot figure it out...But when I do - watch out!! Cute kids (haven't reaching the wonderful teen years yet - LOL) Where the heck is Cayuga? I go often to visit my sister in Indianapolis -(but the drive from Mich is a killer - boring...)

tgig- man oh man, come here for a visit!! You need to give me a hand or a boot in the fanny to get some things done here!! I"m impressed. If I clean off a table with a pile of papers, I'm happy!!

Oh Maria- quilts....I love them. I've made several of the 9 patch ones for my kids when they were younger, but never anything complicated. My dear old aunt is making me one (she has been working on it for two years) and I will treasure it. I just can't do the hand quilting part of it...hands cramp up and I am miserable. If you have any you don't want - I've a good home for them!! LOL

I'm thinking pancakes would hit the spot....off to the kitchen...I'll make extras!! (by the way, this morning I couldn't find the cat, but could hear her...she was laying on top of the stove!!! - I'll disinfect things before I start) good thing I was the first up - DH would have a fit!!

Gravois Mills, MO(Zone 6a)

Sarv Pools can be money pits allright. I do not know how many motors in this one but he they built another complex last year that has five seperate electric motors up to 2 hp. The electric alone for the pool complex hit the owner in the pocket book pretty good. Well if he can afford something like that he should be able to pay for the electric.

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Well, I am up and moving. Feel better today, but still not on top of this "bug" thing. I did manage to eat a grilled cheese sandwich about 11:00 last night, and it settled well. Since I had dozed so much yesterday, I was afraid that I wouldn't sleep, so Mr. B and I camped on the couch last night. I woke up several times, but always went back to sleep. Mr. B knows that I don't feel good, so he was by my side all day and night yesterday. What a sweetie!! I elected to skip church today, as I still have a hot/cold thing going on. Don't want to share my goodies with everybody else. Plus a lady from our church who had cancer surgery 3 weeks ago, is planning on being back today, so I knew that she didn't need to carry this home with her.

Quilts I love them also. DH had an aunt who for about 12-15 years made me a quilt every christmas. In addition, I have one from DH's GM, his DM, and several I have made. I have them displayed all over. I rotate them, so that none will get bleached by the sunlight. I use them for bed spreads in two rooms now, have 3 quilt racks, one in each bedroom, with 3 to each rack, and many more in a cherry chest. I have many patterns, and many different colors. Just love them. I can't quilt anymore, as the operation on my thumb 3 years ago, renders it useless, plus, arthritis in fingers, and carpel tunnel. Now if I could figure out how to use my toes, would be back in business.

Sarv, I also had 2 DIL's that I had nothing in common with. It was almost torture to have to spend much time with them. Course now they are ex's, and DS's girlfriend, is the sort that I feel I can say anything to. I told her the first time I met her, that "I am what I am, and what she sees is what she gets". Settled that issue right away, and everything seems to go well. I like the fact that there is no pretending, and no tiptoeing around anything. I let her chose the topics we talk about, and I never give unsolicited advice, so have made a truce right away. Now watch, this one may not make it to the marrying stage. All that good training down the drain.

I have sorted some bills this moring and will work on them after lunch. Trying to get things ready to file taxes, but don't have all the W-2's or interest statements. So will have to wait another week or two. Going to send DH to his DM's this afternoon, to collect all her bills, so that I can
get them paid too. DMIL is at DH's sister's for a couple of weeks. Seems to be doing well. She has PT 3 times a week, and this SIL is about a mile from the hospital, so it just works out better right now. DMIL is anxious to get to her own home, but still needs assistance, so we will have to evaluate the situation and see when that it will be possible. Another SIL has offered to come stay with her a month, so for the short-term everything is working out well.

Well DH will be home from church shortly, so I had better get moving and get something ready to eat. I will check in later to see what everyone is doing.

Albany, OR(Zone 8a)

Morning all.
I was hoping to work in the yard but, are you kidding me! It is pouring down rain and is windy, so....
Guess I will continue what I started last nite. I went online to get TurboTax, to use the free one up until you have to pay to print and file it.
If you guys ever need a great software, this one is the best. My father had bought it last year for me and I used it for a check. I ended up going to the senior center (tho I ain't old enough to belong) and they worked on my taxes and filed them for free. They have that AARP (sp?) and they have volunteering to help.
It was great to do that last year and will do it again. They do the older folks and low income which I am now since my divorce.
So I am joining Dcat with doing the tax bit now. I do need some more 1099 from the banks yet tho to finish.
Dcat, am glad that you have a nice pooch to help you stay warm while you aren't feeling good. Good dog.
Sarv, both boys have more or less serious girlfriends and it will be interesting to see if they end up marrying them. I like them but as you say, I don't have anything in common with them. One wants to be a vet. so we do have animals in common but that is about it. The other one is a very sweet girl but very boring. This one is the one with the son who is going to be a dentist and can't figure out why he likes/loves her. He has so much going for him and is quite a go getter in life. But.... who knows what will happen.
Am going to head to the Goodwill today to figure out the cost of things that I donated last year. What fun! Actually it is a drag but maybe I can come up with something good for me for a few pennies worth.
I have on the counter some cin. chip cookies. I had made them the other nite and I shouldn't have. My son, who is trying to make weight for wrestling was just drooling over them and the house smelled so good of them.
I was a bad mommy. I should have waited until today to make them so he could actually have one.
Well, hope you all have a good day now.
Later, Carol (the even one)

Schroon Lake, NY(Zone 4a)

Hi!
I wanted to check in while I can and say hello to everyone....DH was working from home last week (no breaks) so I never got on the computer long enough to post!! It's a tough sacrifice, I know, but SOMEONE has to let him earn a living!!

Do you know how hard it is to keep up with all of you if you miss a day, much less a week? I need a Blackberry so I can just carry it around all day and check in!!

Yesterday i could've gotten on the computer but it was a gorgeous almost 50 degrees and sun, so i headed up to work on the farmhouse. I got a full day in of lath and plaster removal, exercise and spring fever!

I leafed back but couldn't find Maria's quilts :-(

I did see Flower Child's kids - very cute pictures! welcome!!
Afew threads back I saw that someon has a cat that can Cuss? Gotta go back and check THAT out.

AND HOORAY for Casey! Let the adventure begin!

i have an opinion about pools - don't get one unless it comes with a pool guy (preferably one who serves you drinks poolside) We had on in NJ, zone6, and I spent at least 10x as much time vacuuming and maintaining it than kids spent swimming! And they were little then! Tell them to get a friend with a pool LOL

dcat sounds like you've been having a bad time of it. i hope you're on the mend.

I am going back to see what everyone's been up to for awhile!!

Gravois Mills, MO(Zone 6a)

DMCDIVITT they do not vacumn anymore as you had to they got a vacumn cleaner that sinks and runs all over the place vacuming the pool. Even runs up the walls and turns at the top. They still take a lot of time and money to operate.

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

dmc, don't know how ro to it the proper way but go to home page, then to crafts then to sewing and quilting,

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

dmc - nice to hear from you again.
I'm in agreement with pools. Never fails to amaze me, the number of people who devote their entire back yards to pools here in a zone 5a where they are only useable for maybe 4 months a year.

Went to church this morning. We were absolutely STUNNED at the end of the service when our beloved minister announced in a tearful statement that he had, after 19 years, decided to accept a call from another church. This man is remarkable and I don't know of another church which has had a pastor that long without various factions growing up within the church. I guess we all thought he'd be there until retirement.
http://www.magma.ca/~eunited/staff/index.html

So think of us as we travel this road towards finding the right person to take on the leadership.

My mother's church was a United Methodist in Fairport, NY and I saw them go through much friction several times as various ministers had been there too long; so I know that it's better to make a change while everyone is on really good terms.

have to go. I can smell the marmalade which means I need to watch it.

Ann

Schroon Lake, NY(Zone 4a)

Maria I checked out the quilts and laughed when you say you didn't do anything complicated! They are beautiful and the stitchery looks quite complicated to me. You don't quilt any more?

Isn't it funny how little time there really is in life to do all the wonderful things you thought you would?

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

The marmalade is done. It's a cranberry-orange marmalade using 4 Seville oranges and 3 Blood oranges, 1 lemon as well as 4 cups of cranberries. I got 10 jelly jars and 3 pint jars out of it which, hopefully, will keep us going until Seville orange season next year.

Successor at FC called - was unable to get into the computer. He, of course, wasn't using the correct password. He's got this daytimer which he has FILLED with detailed notes to himself, all color coded with highliters. There's so much stuff there, I 'm sure he'll never find the important stuff. I look forward to seeing how he does this week when I'm away. LOL

Dunno about weather tomorrow, but it looks fairly mild. I might get into some snow up here, but I think it will be just rain down along Lake Ontario which should be OK. I will go straight south of here and cross into the US at Prescott/Ogdensburg. Last time I crossed at 1000 Islands, we were stopped in traffic for 50 minutes before the bridge. We though there was construction and 1-way traffic on the bridge, but no, I think it was just border control delays. The frustrating thing was sitting within sight of where a lane came from the Toronto direction and watching all those cars get waved ahead while we sat. And workers all over the place doing zip. (That was last August). But I think, after talking to my back-fence neighbour who also grew up in Rochester and whose mother still lives there, that the quieter border crossing and NYS two-lane roads is a good idea.

Have and orchestra rehearsal tonight and maybe I should think about what I'm planning to take with me tomorrow. Also find my passport, etc.

More later.

Ann

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Congrats on doing cleanng Sarv, I should think about doing that one of these days. Never did call that grandchild of my golf partner to do the high stuff. Maybe if I do that I will tackle some of the other chores before she comes here. I'm so broke from vet bills and furniture buying, I need to do some calculations first.

1099s are required to be sent by January 31, unless the IRS has changed the rules again without asking my permission. So, they can mail them by midnight on that date and meet the requirement which means everybody should get them in a week or so. DH does our taxes, I only have to take care of providing the donation receipts and my tax stuff and let him have the headache of crunching the numbers.

He didn't buy a truck!! Made a deal with the guy who's selling it to put it on Ebay for him, and anything he gets over the asking price of $750 will be split. Minus the Ebay commission. Who would buy a 20 year old truck for that? You'd be surprised...!
Come to think of it, I will be too.....

Lazy day, out for breakfast, little nap that didn't work as Sammi and Mini decided to have a wrestling contest on top of the comforter...Nothing like a bouncing kitten to ward off sleep. He's sleeping now on the chair. This morning he climbed into the tissue box I have in the table next to it, I cut the end out so I could reach in, He's in the box with his head sticking out of the oval in the top....what a little clown!

DH has DGS's automatic label maker and I'm hearing clicking noises, soon everything in the house will have a printed label on it. Help!!!

DMC hold off on the Blackberry, they are being sued by a company whose software they used without permission, and they might be history! I think it would be neat to have one, but as soon as I buy some new techy device, they come along with a better one.....and I become obsolete. Besides, as DH has said, we've used up all our brain space memorizing how to use the digital stuff we already have and there isn't any room to learn new ones. Nice to see you back again. (That's why we have two computers...LOL...saves a lot of bloodshed and requests for the 2X4)

Dcat, I've had two SILS that were practically speechless, having a conversation with them was like pullling teeth, had another one who had an opinion about everything and managed to mention every single one at length, which required no effort other than nodding or saying, Uh huh, at timed intervals. I've actually put the phone down and walked away temporarily and come back and she hadn't skipped a beat. My DIL is a sweetie, and I love her to death, we tease my DS that he married his sister because she fit in with our nutty crew so well, it was like we always knew her. That's a real gift!! Glad you are feeling better, I've escaped the flu bug for a couple of years and feel very fortunate.

Susan I think all our birds are in hiding from this dismal rain. Did see a big murder of crows sitting in the black walnut trees yesterday morning. First one flew south past our house, then another, then we heard some loud "signal" type cawing, then the whoe crew took off towards the other two. They must have sent out sentinels to spot some tasty carrion or something. Interesting birds, they have enormous wing spans. We see a few redtail hawks out here too. Found a dead mouse in the garage once, and swept it outside with a broom, down to the end of the driveway, it was gone in minutes. We have several mated cardinals who demand food and annoy their wives and the little finches and other small birds. We have a pair of bluebirds way down in the corner who come quickly to eat and then fly away, any slight movement sends them aloft. Sounds like you are feeling better too.

Hello to everyone I haven't addressed individually, I've read all your posts, and enjoy them so much. Still waiting for pet photos from our newbie, FC. And smart remarks from Oz. And anything from Ernie and Robert!!

TTYL here's our little demon in the tissue box..

Sheesh - would you believe I had been in my chair almost ALL day (thought I had sprouted roots even) I've read, nodded- then startled myself when my head bounced down - they repeated the whole thing over and over. Plus, I've eaten everything that isn't moldy!! Even found an unopened can of cashews and ate half of them...shame shame on me.

Think I'll take a walk in the rain out to the barn and see what DH is doing. He has a lazy boy out there and often I find him sleeping!!! LOL we make a good couple.

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Hi all,

I've just had 2 full days of putting plants in the ground. I think I have nearly all of the ones I moved up here done, and definately the new ones.

I picked a large area of ground yesterday, raked the forest debris away and sat the pots all around where I was going to plant them. I have no idea what many of them are and not sure if they are in the right places or not, but when they start greening up, I'll figure that out.

We went to town this morning and bought another 300 pounds of cow manure (in the bag). Found some less than half the price of Black Kow. Stopped at storage and picked up all my boxes and stuff, except a corner hutch and the second bench seat for my van. Everything went up in the attic in the pumphouse. Rent due on that storage unit on the 5th and we won't be renewing it now that we have storage space at home.

I repotted the lettuce and squash seedlings as they seemed to need more room to grow. We can't put them in the ground until all threat of frost is gone, maybe in February. But they are now out of my bathtub and will go in the pumphouse when the temps drop.

Maybe I can take a nice long soak in that big tub tonight after I clean the potting soil out of the bottom. I keep saying that, and this time I think I really mean it.

Sounds like everything for most of yall is going pretty good today, just the usual day to day life things. This is good, it means no real problems.

Now, for that bath.

My DH tried Tax-Act On-line and liked it better than Turbo Tax. He says it wa s easier.
this is off subject but something I wish all of you would spread to family and friends.
I had read years ago that there were misgivings surrounding Teflon. I also recall Darius saying that she had not used it in years and never would again. Well, now the FDA is strongly recommending cookware companies to stop manufacturing it and I expect an all-out ban soon. Please get rid of any you have and not wait until it is scratched up.

Bartlesville, OK(Zone 6a)

What's the problem with it? Would like to see some information about it if you have it.
Thanks
Susan

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Dh tried turbo a few years ago, said it was easier to do it in a rough draft with a pencil? I think it takes you back and forth too much in all the different categories, if you file a simple return, it's not likely worth the trouble to load it up and use it.

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Too much to catch up must have clicked the wrong button thought no one was here, lol, see you later

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I saw the article in 2 or 3 places but on WebMD here is the article from Jan. 27
"Chemical industry leaders have agreed to an EPA plan to phase out a chemical used t o make Teflon. microwave popcorn bags, waterproof clothing & many other products.
the chemical PFOA (also known as C8) , is a man-made chemical that persists in the enviroment. when it gets into the body, it stays there for a very long time. And it has SOMEHOW GOTTEN INTO THE BODIES OF NEARLY EVERYONE ON EARTH.
.....animal studies strongly suggest that when enough PFOA builds up in the body, it can cause cancer, liv er damage, growth defects, immune-system dam age, and death."
Here's the thing that troubles me. This is a volunt ary pr ogram to phase out PFOA, and they can phase it out over a 7-year program. Since it takes 10 years for PFOA to leave the body , there will still be many illnesses caused by this chemical for many years to come.
Why not an all-out ban? It makes money.
My daughter says the illness starts with a symptom called "Teflon Flu" and then you don't know what part of your body could be effected after that.
Another product that uses PFOAs is Scotchguard and other products manufactured by 3M. They signed an agreement with the EPA in 2000 and phased out Teflon.
Why is this news taking so long to reach the public? I have finally heard on major news reports yesterday and today.

Millbury, MA(Zone 5a)

Hi all,

Woodspirit, want an answer to your question "Why is this news taking so long to reach the public?" I think you've already answered it yourself --- "It makes money." Sorry, I'm a downright cynic when it comes to this sort of thing. I've avoided Teflon pans right from the start, but doubt that I've been able to avoid all the ill effects due to its widespread use.

I'm being very lazy today. I haven't been anywhere near my workbench despite the fact that I know that I absolutely HAVE TO get some work done on jewelry repairs. I'm at war with myself because, on the one hand, I know that I have to get things done for customers, and on the other, I think that I ought to actually get a real day off once in a while without having to work at something that I don't really want to do. We went out grocery shopping earlier today and I made tacos for supper and that's been the extent of my efforts!

Oz, your son's pool design is gorgeous, but that's something else I never wanted in the least. Every time I see a home swimming pool my automatic thought is "What a waste of space! How many veggies could I grow in that area instead?" If I were ever to consider buying a piece of property with an inground pool, the cost of getting it out and filling the space with loam would figure largely in my calculations.

Sarv, glad that you haven't given in and agreed to house-sit/kid-sit for your brother. I think its a good sign that he's called and not mentioned it.

M5, loved the "tissue box kitty" picture. He's really a handful and a half! (I'm assuming that by now you're more sure that he really is a "he"?)

Hi mcd. I hadn't registered your absence until someone else mentioned it, although I do usually kind of notice those who are closer geographically to me. Glad you were able to check in again.

D'cat, glad you're feeling better. Hopefully another day will see you "right as rain" again.

I know that I'm missing people and topics, but I want to try to get off of here before the link to tomorrow pops up. I often end up feeling like I'm a castaway throwing out the proverbial message in a bottle when I'm the last one to post on a daily thread! Night all!

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Hi everyone, I'm back from my trip to the endurance riders convention, and feel pretty wiped out at the moment. Will go to bed early tonight for sure. The weather wasn't too bad for traveling, some compact snow on the roads for a few miles in places, then rain and wind in the Portland area all weekend. I got several awards, attended a bunch of educational lectures and forums, tried unsuccessfully to sell my old saddle, visited with a lot of friends, got enthused about riding again but came home to several inches of new snow, wind and unpleasant conditions for riding.

Having missed 3 days of Coffee and....... I'm way behind. Will try to catch up tomorrow and make some more intelligent comments than would be possible with limited brainwaves tonight. Goodnight, hope we all sleep well and wake up greeting the new day with smiles.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Hi there,

Probably the last check-in for tonight. Just in from a rehearsal of the smaller orchestra. I missed several that were conflicts with the OSO in January. I think the viola is going with me tomorrow as I need to find some practice time.

Have to start thinking about what I'm taking with me; so I'll wish all of you a good night. I should get a chance to check in tomorrow, but after that I'm not sure. Don't know whether my hostess is on dial-up or not. If she is, I don't want to use any of her time.

Have a good night everyone.

Ann

Vegas,NV Filbert, SC(Zone 7b)

Wow, you all have been a chatty bunch today.

Meezer, you will have to come down one spring and visit. We will have Darius come at the same time and then between all of us we will ambush him into moving. Having the two mortgages is going to be really rough, but we knew that going into this and the reward far out weighed the problems. I laughed at your nick name of nose in book. My daughter is the only child I know that had to be placed on restriction from reading for a week. The child would not go outside. I guess its a good thing she is going to major in English Lit.

FC, wow you are a busy one. I am married with three kids. 18girl, 17boy, and 11boy. We are owned by 2 cats (Kitty and PITA) that also allow us to house 2 dogs(Cleo and Nina). I have a fish tank that we call kitty TV since it is the source of some comical shows. I am currently working for the school district here in Las Vegas but have just closed escow and signed papers on a 14.4 acre piece of property with house in Clover, SC. We are moving in January of 2007. DH and I have to finish our contracts here before leaving to lock in our retirement benefits. I love flowers and plants, but am a newbie and have 20 questions for every idea. The very reason for discovering DG in the first place and I have been addicted since.

Maria I smiled when I read that you and Sampson are doing good. I cant wait for some spring pictures of him in the garden...

Susan, I am so jealous of your cardinals. In fact I am jealous of everyone that has birds coming to there house. Here the only bird you see is pigeons and then you are usually running to avoid them dropping on you.

Patishell I am very jealous of you. Hopefully I will be able to meet her once I move. I can imagine her with the furbabies also. She has such a down to earth soul.

Defoe, wow I bet all those quilts are beautiful. So exactly who do I need to get rid of to be in line for one in the will???

DMC, I am so with you on the pool. We have one now. We had to pour over 5000.00 into it last summer and this one looks like it could be the same. I spend at least a half hour a day cleaning it and we have one of those vacuums that run up the walls, it just doesn't scrub the tile or collect all the leaves. DS asked if we were going to get one in the new house and DH and I said in harmony OH He!! NO. WE have a jacuzzi now also and we will be getting one at the new house with a gazebo to keep the leaves and dirt out.

Molly, its good to hear that you are getting things organized. I am so impressed with all the work you all have finished. Love the pump house.

9kitty, I was curious about this also after a few posts from Darius and a few from others. I called our poison control office here. They said that although no official report of having it recalled has been issued more then a safe amount of complaints have been filed against companies. They are suggesting that people start clearing it out as quickly as possible and never to use it if any flaking has begun.

Mary, sleep well you deserve it. In fact that goes for all of you lack of sleepers.

Okay, I think I remembered everyone, but if I missed someone it was not intentional. The memory is the first thing to go and I am way past that stage. Hugs to you all

Casey

Missed VAnn while posting. Have a safe trip, enjoy yourself and have fun. I am sure the problems at the FC will be there whether you stress or not and will still be there when you get home.

Watched a little TV,,,took a nap, made dinner,,,watched the new movie The Dukes of Hazzard,,then thought I'd pop in and say Hi.

oooo, that picture of the little beast is so sweet,,,,in the tissue box,,,,LOL

well, I'm going to get tomorrow's daily up.

Carat, I have question that you have probbly already answered elsewhere. Why are you leaving Vegas? Also where is Clover, SC? I mean, what larger city is it near? I haven't been to Vegas in many years an d have not seen the new huge casinos like New york, New york.
