By popular request, here 'tis - enjoy!!!
Welcome to the NE Gardening forum!
So far, we've heard from people in zones 5-7. Are there DGers in other zones interested in this forum? Let us know.
Thanks Terry!
Thanks, Terry and Anita, too!
Yippee! I am very excited about this forum. Thanks!
Just wanted to see how many locals were checking in- no one from NJ yet so here I am!!
South Jersey checkin' in....
Thanks for the forum! Woohoo! Checking in from Southeastern Connecticut- zone 6b! Can't help being happy in this weird weather.
Another MA checkin. Thanks
I can't be the only gardener living in RI here at DG, where is every one else?
Dena
Welcome, Joisey!!
I love your name Annie, to cute. : )
Dena
I'm in CT but I grew up in Jamestown, RI...parents still there so I should count as a RI native. I stop in at Farmer's Daughter on Rt 138 in my travels to visit...
Linda
Linda- Hey neighbor! Love your name!
Every time we go to RI , I try to get DH to stop at some of the nurseries along the way. He is so sick of doing this! Last time he sat in the car, but the nursery turned out to be so big I didn't come back to the car for like an hour!
You let me know when and we'll go together, we could make a day of it and hit every nursery I can think of. I can't get ANYONE other than my mom to go with me, and she gets tired before I do.
Dena
Yet another MA gardener who just joined this site (also frequents the 'other' big gardening forum with the same login)...
Sue
Hey, Sedum37!
Does Maryland count???? How far South does it go when you talk about the NORTH EAST??? Or....are we, like, the northernmost State that is considered "SOUTH-EAST"??? What do you all think? Where is the line???
Here it is--Jan 29th and 30th in Baltimore and we have had 2 days in a row in the 60's! Matter of fact, most of the week is supposed to be above normal temps.
Here, we all know, it is just Mother Nature messing with us! She is also surely messing with all the dormant bulbs, trees, shrubbery and such. The bulbs are up now almost 3"! The grass seems to be greening up. Birds seem to be in the "nesting" behavior, etc. Then--WHAMO!!! A deep freeze will hit and do some serious damage to the Gardens. However, we are used to this weird, East Coast "games" we have to live through. Same old--same old-- most years!
In a matter of days, we could be in the grip of a deep freeze. We could, easily, have a 6"-8" snowfall any time! We could have snow and sleet storms an toppled trees and power outages. ANYTHING is possible!
As it is now--days are in the high 50's and 60. Nights are in the low 30's or less. How can this be??? Well--it "be" here and we all just have to roll with the punches.
I always get so annoyed when all the "big box" stores start selling annuals in early April. And people buy them!!! By the flats! The FOOLS!!!! Our official frost-free date is May 10th. (Zone 7 and 7a here). I usually "fudge it" and start planting certain things in the very end of April--and holding my breath for good weather. Never sure, though!
Life is never boring--nor predictable here! Gita
Another CT voice weighing in - this time central CT. Zone 5b/6a, depending on terrain. Gita, I think technically Baltimore is "Mid -Atlantic" (my folks are in DC) but who cares? The more the merrier - although a lot of the plants you can grow, we can only dream about..... My biggest concern right now is roses -- they're getting lulled into complacency with this mild weather, and when the arctic cold hits (and it will...) the winterkill will be significant. At least we have a forum to moan, groan and grin in!
Sarah
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, WONDEFUL!!!
Gita, Welcome & feel free to hang out. When I first posted the idea I suggested New England, New York, New Jersey & Penn. but as Sarah said, the more the merrier. Plus your erratic weather sounds a lot like Southern New England.
Dave
Hey all! What going on tonight?
Hi Gita, Hi Sarah.
Dave47, Ivy! I looked forward to some DG time all day...ahhhh, its good to be home.
Hi Dena, glad you're back!
Yeah had to fight with the kitty cat for the desk chair, I shook up the Pounce can...ha ha cat, I win! And here I am.
Whatcha up to?
Not much. Getting ready for The Daily Show. One of my sanity preservers.
Got any more of your creative writing gems tonight?
Hi everyone - looked this up so there is no confusion - the more the merrier...

I don't think its flowing so freely tonight Dave47, I think someone has to spark it by saying something, then I'll get a mental picture, and I'll share it with you. I got Anita earlier.
Hi there, Sarah, Gita!
Gita- My DH's birthday is April 7th, and we have had snow on or around that date every other year for as long as I can remember! Still, people are out buying their marigolds and such! It is agony to wait, though.
The Daily Show- Thank goodness for it- Otherwise this world we live in would be just too awful!

I am lurkin around in SE Pa (near Philly)
Hi mysticwill. You don't have to just lurk. We have a bunch of zone 7s around here.
Hi all,
Just discovered this forum.
I'm another MA gardener (wannabe).
far NW metro Boston
Lora B.
Saw your post in Coffee's on - but here's another hello!!
Welcome Lora! I never heard of Billerica. Are you near Sharon, MA?
(not) Dave, Sharon, MA is down my way, about 25 miles SSW of Boston. Billerica is about that far but NW of Boston. Both nice towns.
LoraB, I only jumped in here because Sharon is a small town and you 'North Shore' people may not be familiar with it.
Andy P
I'm a "North Shore" people?? Didn't know that. :-)
We've been in MA for 7 years but I still don't know most of the terms most natives use. Although I can pronounce Peabody and Worchester correctly now!
Lora
Is Billerica where they did a This Old House series a couple years ago?
Ivy, Yes I think so.
I think so too. My sister in Louisiana actually called me one day and left a message saying This Old House was in Billerica. I'm going to have to ask around and find out where it is. I'd love to drive by it.
Uh-oh, Lora, NOT Worchester! It's pronounced like Worcestershire Sauce, just leave off the shire and the sauce parts. I was born there and believe me, it really doesn't have an "H" anywhere in it. (More like the Wooster in some other state --- Ohio, maybe?)
I'm originally from Essex/Gloucester (GLAWS-tah) MA but have moved out of the northeast to West-by-God-Virginia. I lurk around here because I'm actually in the same grow zone (6a), and also because I get homesick. :) I'm an authentic Yankee native going back some silly number of generations and would be happy to help any newbies to the area with the local pronounciation. LOL :)
