Any interest in a Heuchera and Friends forum?

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Would anyone else be interested in a Heuchera, Heucherella, Tiarella forum? These are my newest addiction as of last summer, and I want to add more this year. I'd love to discuss growing these plants, and it seems that they are fast becoming one of the newest fads in plant collecting. (Doesn't hurt that they cohabitate well with Hostas either, huh?)

Anyone else been bitten by this bug?

Edited to correct a typo that screamed at me when I took another look at this thread tonight.

Actually, I'd be interested too - I started "collecting" them a couple years ago, and I have around 20 or so named varieties (and am scheming for places to tuck more, since there are always new ones coming out to tempt us!)

Bartlesville, OK(Zone 6a)

I would love to have a heuchera forum since it is rapidly becoming one of my 'collections'. LOL

I've begun collecting a few myself. I guess there are many, many cultivars and species to choose from. They are one of those plants that add interest to the garden whether they are in bloom or not. I would be interested, as well, but haven't much expertise to offer.

Gravois Mills, MO(Zone 6a)

Yeah me too. You got to show the people at daves garden that there is a demand for it. I been after them about it. Seems silly to me since they cannot get post on some of these new ones that do not even pertain to Gardening. I was ask to hel ptry to push the hunting and fishing forum and it is not going anywhere.

Central, WI(Zone 4a)

Would Love to have a Forum for Heuchera, Heucherella, Tiaralla.

I'm here! I have about 7 different ones, and would love to add to the collection. I wonder how they would hold up in a "Secret HHT (Heuchera, Heucherella, Tiarella) Trade?"

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

pins, are you wondering how they would hold up in shipping? I think they are pretty tough. I've divided some of mine and sent and I've also received some that have been divided. They travel like little troopers. :)

I just looked in my journal and I've got 18 Heuchera, 2 Heucherella, and 7 Tiarella. Clearly I need to shop for some more Heucherella's. :) I'm off to explore the new beauties and then check the balance in the checkbook. LOL

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Most of my heuchera were grown from seed, but I got a couple of the fancier cultivars in trade. They are such pretty plants! Crispy Curly grew easily from seed, as did the Palace purple.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I have to say, it has been especially nice to see all their differnt little leaves out there in my otherwise naked shade bed. :)

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Yes please!

Orangeville, ON(Zone 4b)

I'd be interested in a Heuchera forum.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

me me me! i have started collecting them too! another addiction in the making

Decatur, GA(Zone 7a)

Dori, any idea how many you have? Do we know how many are on the market at this time? I just love them.

BTW, they are evergreen (or orange, lol) here (Atlanta). How are they in other places?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

We have a LOT of Heuchera/Heucherella/Tiarellas in PlantFiles.
Heuchera - 287 entries
X Heucherella - 25 entries
Tiarella - 32 entries

You can browse them by their cultivar names alphabetically here: http://davesgarden.com/pf/finder/index.php?sname=Heucheras&submit=submit

Even more dangerous, you can look for specific sources of many of them in PlantScout.

287 Heucheras? Wow! I know somebody here with I think 42 and I thought that was pretty good. I think I have about 20 .

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Terry, when I go to your link to the PlantFiles I see the 4 'Top 10' lists plus the options to choose 'ALL' varieties or varieties by a letter of the alphabet. If I choose 'ALL' I just see the 4 'Top 10' lists again. If I choose 'A' I see all varieties beginning with 'A' but then I have to go back to the top and select 'B' to see the varieties beginning with 'B', etc. How do I pull up all varieties from A to Z without going back and forth through the alphabet? I know there is probably an obvious way to do it but I am only on my first cup of coffee this morning. LOL

Edited to say I am becoming addicted to Heucheras, Heucherallas and Tiarellas. You probably shouldn't show me an easy way to view all of them.

That's a technical hiccup in the "browse by popular cultivar" view (it's true for all plants that are browse-able). It started when we began highlighting the "top" (most photographed/most commented/etc.) varieties. We really should remove the "All" option anyway because when you try to load all the daylilies, you'd be staring at a list of 30,000 or so; 10,000 Iris, and over 4,000 Hostas.

While there's no way to BROWSE all of them, A-Z you can SEARCH PlantFiles and sort your search results by cultivar name (but just to warn people - that's a big honkin' list if you try to search for all Hems, Hostas, or Iris.)

Here are the alphabetized-by-cultivar search results for....

Heuchera: http://davesgarden.com/pf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=Heuchera&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=&searcher%5Bcultivar%5D=&searcher%5Bhybridizer%5D=&search_prefs%5Bsort_by%5D=cultivar&images_prefs=both&Search=Search

Thanks, Terry. I will check them out.

I posted on the thread in the Shady Gardens thread...so I figured that I would post here as well. In general I am not a huge fan of the idea of a forum for a specific Genus (or two or three in this case). I just figure that there are hundreds (likely over a thousand) plants that are popular in American gardens (help us if we get a large tropical base!). Do we really need a thousand different forums to discuss each plant individually?

I have nothing against Heucheras and in fact they are one of my favorite plants. I enjoy seeing other's pictures and I love to hear about the new introductions. If there is a Heuchera forum created then I doubt that I will visit it specifically, so I will miss out on that discussion.

A quick search turned up 5 threads (including this one) that have the word Heuchera in the title that have posts made in 2006.

Brent, I think you may have inadvertantly (sp) made a point for having a Heuchera forum. With all the different places that Heucheras can be talked about (Shady Plants, Perennials, Foliage Plants, etc), it would be so much nicer to have it all together. Look at the Coleus Forum. Personally, I never thought they would have enough people interested to warrant a separate forum (personal opinion here), but they have taken off like gangbusters!

Central, WI(Zone 4a)

pins,

I would have to agree. At least with a specific Forum we could go there instead of having to jump around to 5 different threads (possibly more) in a few different Forums. Would love to see them in one Forum,,,so much easier.

Kelly

Bartlesville, OK(Zone 6a)

pins, I also agree. I spend most of my time in pets, parking lot, and hostas now, but would be easy to devote some time to heuchera.
