Well, thought I'd go ahead and post a great big hello to our new member Flowerchild. I hope you'll come back and chat a spell. :)

I'd love to! What's the weather like down south? It's started to get a little cold here over the past week but we have had a very mild winter. It's been really nice.

I have a question and I don't want to sound dumb but what does DH stand for? I've seen it several times and I've come to the conclusion that it has something to do with husband, but I'm not sure. Also DD? Like I've said in a few other places, I'm computer illiterate so bear with me on some of this stuff. Always good to learn new things!!

Michelle

Hi Michelle
Yes you're right. DH is "the darling husband" but others have said it can stand for a variety of other things depending on what he's up to. ;) DD is darling daughter, DMIL is darling mother in law, etc. don't worry, you'll catch on. :)
As for our weather ... it's been rather crazy. Last week we actually had the air on a couple of days. Now we have the heat on. It's no wonder we stay sick or have allergies all the time. :)

I wish I lived in your zone. You can plant so many things that I would love to have but would never survive here. I've been trying to get my DH to build me a sunroom but no luck so far. He did promise me a greenhouse for our anniversary but that was in November and so far no signs of that project starting. I don't think it will happen anytime soon because he started going to school full time and works full time. Guess I could try to build on myself, but I don't know how long it would stay standing. I've been keeping my eyes open looking for an old frame that's not being used but nothing yet.

I'm really enjoying this site. Everybody is super friendly and I'm finding all kinds of interesting things.

Albany, OR(Zone 8a)

Casey, I want to congratulate on your new home finally. Hope all goes well from now on then with it.
Molly, those plants you got look great! They will brighten up your yard for sure!
Dcat, sounds like you are so so busy with all you do. You are quite a lady!
Ann, now you can be like a lot of these gals here, retired. Hope you are happy with it all then. Now you just have to stay away from the food cupboard, lol.
Daruis, hope you find some good food to eat. Nobody likes to being starving.
Sarv, I just love your stories on the sleeping separately and especially the camping one.
Well, am going to be spending the day on the hard bleachers again. At a wrestling tournament. Is here in town so no travelling which will be so nice for a change.
Didn't have rain for a few days and it was so so nice. We are to get 3 major rain storms come thru this weekend tho. Guess no gardening on Sunday then. Darn! Want to get my hand dirty again! They look way too clean for me, lol.
Have a good day on Sat. all.

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Good morning every one, just posted in yesterdas thread, did not realize I was doing that.
Michelle, don't know much about computers either even have to look at the keyboard to type don't lnow how to that either always making tons of mistakes.

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Morning everyone!! Slept half way decent last night- only 5 flashes that I remember!! Just finished a piece of pizza for breakfast- it had garlic crust and my breath will stink all I fear!!

Welcome flower!! Tell us all bout yourself. We're a motley crew here - but the best friends you'll find!

Molly - love the haul of flowers - I'm having withdrawal here....I need some color. All we have is brown trees, white snow, or dull grass (when the snow melts)

Vi- congrads on being officially retired!! It's the best thing I've ever done!! I spent the first year after retirement subbing, but gave that up after a school year- just too much work!! LOL You'll find you are busier than ever. Sign up for the retirement $$$ - you deserve it however little it may be!

Carat - Yahoo on you finally being an official land owner - now when is the move?? Country living is wonderful!! IMHO I'm just outside a big city - and feel I have the best of both worlds. I can look out my back windows and see the deer and the woods, yet hop in the car and be at a huge shopping mall in 10 min.

DS and DGS stopped over last night. DGS had a science project he needed his grandpa's help with. While we were waiting for DH to get a going, DGS read me several chapters from his latest favorite book. Suddenly he loves reading! Yipee -I'm a big reader too!! I went and picked up two pizzas and they were the best I've had. Teacher DIL called to tell us they weren't going to be camping with us for the 10 days as planned- grrrrr - I spent hours getting those reservations done. I told her I was disappointed and they could change the reservations themselves - I wasn't going to do anymore. Their sight is in the middle of our whole group, so that means a stranger will be camped in our midst. Sometimes I could just kick my kids to tim-buck-too and back. Oh well, such is life.

9Kit- watch those meds times!!! If the pain gets away from you it is hard to control....been there done that!

Did everyone hear the news about the new diabetes inhaller?? We just had a friend's daughter (9yr old) that was diagnosed with type 1 and has to have shots 4 x a day. Oh this is wonderful news for her...

Darius - I think your sis is doing a science experiment with the cottage cheese!! Yuck...(although we did use out dated parmesean on our pizza last night LOL)

Rain here today...

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Good morning all,

I'm still working on the end of yesterday's digest.

defoe wrote

Quoting:
I know you have a trip planned, but after that what.

I've got a long list which I'll detail sometime later. LOL
In the short term, I've agreed, as a volunteer at the FC (remember it basically operates with about 100 volunteers) to look after the production of month-end stats for a few months. I told another volunteer who has sort-of become the Head interviewer that I would like to interview should someone not be able to come in. But I think my primary volunteering there in the short term will be as an admin advisor for my successor. But not next week. He's got to learn to fly on his own. ;-) More on future plans later.

dr - I'll be limiting myself to one day a week in the short term at the FC although a number of the other volunteers are there more than that.
The big thing is that I WON'T be bringing stuff home to work on.

FlowerChild95, welcome to coffee... I look forward to getting to know you. Darius can probably offer advice on building your sun room.

sarv - let's hope that diabetes inhailer works well. It's not yet approved for Canada.

Well so far today, I've read the (big) Saturday newspaper, put together a batch of bread and eaten breakfast. The marmalade has to soak until this evening. I need to tackle the laundry monster and plan to go into the FC for about an hour to bale out successor. Seems he was there at midnight Thursday/Friday - tending to the data entry that he had ignored. It has a process of entering the date by hitting the sspace bar. Trouble is that computer is old, running 'Windows 3.1 and doesn't update time. Was still running on daylight time. So half-way through his data entry, the date changed. And the script (macro) for preparing the report has a date element in it. It will take me 10 minutes to fix but he might end up losing data. We didn't get to it yesterday because there were other things I needed to attend to and that particular computer is in a room used for interviewing clients and not available when the program is open. Lest any of you think we are really in the dark there, we DO have two other computers - one runs Windows 98 and one has Windows XP pro. LOL (We just like the way the old database program works).

Hey everyone, where is dmv? Did she indicate she would be away? If so, I missed it.

Have a good day everyone.

Ann

Gravois Mills, MO(Zone 6a)

Ann you sound like my wife in retirement. She takes care of the computer setup for two services on sunday at church. She does a couple other jobs up there. She is a active lady Elk Serving on dance committee's nursing homes you name it. She is a officier in the Local Garden club and also in a 3 town thing called Longtimers and Newcomers that helps newly located people fit in. She has been 90 miles up the road going to the doctor wiuth poeple twice this week because they wanted her to come with them for comfort. It is good you keep busy Ann the alternative is to sit and die.

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

I spoke with Darius a few minutes ago. She's on her way further south today. Her cat is a bit lonesome so she's in laying down with Jeremy watching TV. He gets away with snuggling her all the time and she won't let me pat her but once.

I am on our second pot of coffee and decided to have a bit of biscotti with it. There's more there on the counter if you care for some.

Waiting for the outside temp to warm up so I can get some work done out there. Lots of plants to put in and I have a plan now of where. I spose 64 is warm enough now. After 10 minutes I will have a sweat worked up.

Got an idea in another thread about getting some free manure. Put a "wanted" entry in freecycle. I think I'll do that when I figure out how. Darius tells me rabbit manure is usable instantly so I may ask for that and any other grain fed aged poo. I can use all the doodoo I can get to amend this sand out here for growing things.

I missed the visit with the lady from the Forestry dept but she left a book with her tree recommendations and I got a package yesterday with butterfly and plant info as well as all the local nurseries in the county.......like I need to visit another nursery. :^))))))

Well, no more excuses, gotta get some work done.

Molly
:^)))

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Well, good morning all. Have been up for ages, have somehow gotten a stomach virus that has been circulating in the area for weeks. I was up and down all night, still not feeling too good.

DR, hope you don't get bleacher calluses!. It is good that no traveling is involved, so that is a big plus. Good luck to DS today. Sounds like a crummy weekend for you weather wise. It is sunny and cool here today. High to be in the upper 40's. Not planning on being out, so it doesn't matter.

Sarv, wish my stomach was up to pizza, but not today. Tuna yesterday and pizza today, what a breakfast menu. I don't know that they are bad choices, but my stomach demands conventional food until about noon. Then I can handle just about anything. Sorry about DIL and her news about not going camping. Make that stranger in your midst a friend!! May be better company than original tenants.

VA, you are not starting retirement well, if you have to go in to help successor . I would tell him that there is a limit to the number of times that you would help!!.

Ozarkian, your wife sounds as busy as I am. I have never learned to say no, so I usually end up with way more "jobs" than is practical.

Well, I am going to mix up the hush puppies for the fish fry tonight, that I will not be attending!! DH volunteered my services for this, now he will end up frying them. Wonder how many people would eat them if they knew I was sick? I will be careful, wear rubber gloves, and a face mask (really) to do this, maybe I won't contaminate them like that.

You all have a nice day, and I will be back to check in later.

Vegas,NV Filbert, SC(Zone 7b)

OH gosh have I missed you all. Told DH not to bother me for a hour so I could catch up some. Still haven't read everything but I will.

Flowerchild welcome to our little corner of the world, have a seat and tell us all about yourself.

VAnn, a huge yahoo for the retirement. I am sure that once you sit around the house for a while and get things organized you will be up there at the FC as much as the other volunteers. I hope the new guy doesn't allow his lack of skills to affect the FC in a bad way.

Sarv, one of my student just receive the presciption for the inhaler but we dont have a pharmacy that is carrying it yet so they are going to have to wait a bit longer. She is 15 and has been on shots since she was 5.

9Kitty, I am glad to hear that you are healing so well. When I had my surgeries I had to learn the hard way how to manage the pain pills and not allow myself to think I was better then I was. I hated the medications and would wait until the last possible second to take them and then be in extreme pain for most of the time. Then a doctor sat me down and explain that my resistance was actually causing me to heal slower. The meds allow the muscles and tissue to relax and heal faster and not cause stress to the bone tissue.

Molly I love the new pump house, and your shopping spree had me oohhh and ahhhing away. I am really going to have to restrain myself and just keep putting the money aside so I can really go a bit wild when we move.

Darius, glad to hear you arrived safe and sound, my brother was the same way with the food in his frigerator. I would go over and find a cup of milk left in the gallon that I had purchased a month before. GROSS.... And he would leave plates uncovered in there for weeks with a mystery item on it....
Remember to only eat what you brought in and I am sure you will be fine...

Sarv, I am just beginning the stage of the hot flashes and night sweats. My doctor told me to take Evening Primrose oil caplets and they have helped alot. Hope it continues.

OZ, I agree keeping active is a huge part of keeping the body going longer. I hope you and the DW are active for many years to come...

Thank you all so much on the support and prayers with the house. I am so happy that part is over now. DH went to the store last night to get a few things and bought me some software for landscape designing. This way I can play with the ideas that I have now. I will probably be going back over Presidents Day weekend. I am going to surprise my best friend and take my youngest with me. They have always been close. She has two girls, one is married and lives right around the corner from me here, and the other is at the rotten 15 yr old stage. DS loves to help her with her craft projects and they get along wonderfully, she has always been like a second mom to him. So while they spend some time together I am going to get some wild flowers spread out. I spoke with a gentleman at Park Seeds. He is originally from the area I am moving to and he said that the best way to get the look I am after is to combine my seed with an equal amount of sand and an equal amount of fertilizer in a bucket then with using a hand held wide spreader walk the area I want planted. This spring will be nice but next spring just after we move in will be stunning. I ordered the seed I want and having it shipped to my friends until I get there.
Oh and for those that asked the official move is scheduled for next January unless I can get a new job there that pays close to the same (HaHa) sooner. With two mortgages and the kids our funds seem to go out as fast as they come in. My contract is up as of August 1st this year. So I can leave anytime after that with out any penalties. I have already given them notice that I will be leaving and they have granted me a short term stay, so I can work right up until the week before we leave. DH has to stay until November, so he will start putting in applications around the middle of October. Once we sell the house here I will either try to change to part time or just quit. DH would rather I didn't work when we move. (Love that man)

WOW, I have been a bit chatty, better get up from here and get some housework done....

Hope all have a spectacular Saturday
Casey

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

See Maria's other talents in the quilting thread - http://davesgarden.com/place/t/568124/#new

Oz, I ain't about to sit and die yet. LOL

defoe, you're right about not starting retirement well. One hour turned into two. But I also collected up the rest of my stuff. I had left my briefcase there yesterday when the vols took me out to lunch and I never got back to colect it and a few other things. He says he can track me down in Rochester area if needed. I don't think so. DH won't tell, LOL. And nobody else here knows the name of the person I'm staying with.

To be fair, if I hadn't gone out to lunch and then out for the haircut, we could have finished up what we did this morning yesterday afternoon.

Casey, my replacement actually has pretty good skills, but he dragged his heels on learning to handle the client files which is absolutely crucial to running the program. Now he's paying for it. ;-)

It's mild today. May go wash my car on the driveway. May also go look at new computers.

Ann

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Thanks, Ann you are so thoughtful

Vegas,NV Filbert, SC(Zone 7b)

Maria, beautiful job on the quilts. I will try and get a picture of my one and only. I saw the most beautiful crazy patchwork quilt at a fabric show and just had to have one. Took 3 years to finish and I swore I would never make another. You have my deepest admiration for doing more then one and for them all to be so beautiful..

Casey

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

My son is an Artst he desinged many fabrics for well known cloth manufactures in NYC, even J. Kennedy had a chair covered with one of his designs, it is in the well known auction catalogue when first her things and husbands were sold.
My point is that he had a lot of show pieces of every fabrik there is and gave me lots of them, The black and white wall hanging is silk from from him..
For him I made a crazy quilt he has hanging on the wall. I had trunks full of fabrics but had to give them away to other quilters who of course delighted to have sush lovely fabrics to quilt with

Gravois Mills, MO(Zone 6a)

Was some discussion about swimming pools. I got a couple of pictures from Better homes and Gardens of one my son built in the suburban St Louis area. We were not able to send them out till we got this new fax. This is a night shot.

Bartlesville, OK(Zone 6a)

Wow OZ, I hope he builds one for you. That is just gorgeous.

I had another decent night last night, I too took a whole ambien, usuallyonly take half, but I really wanted to get some sleep. Woke up when I should about 3am to take my tylenol and then slept until almost 9. DH camein to see if I was OK, staying back here so long. LOL

Guess what!!!!! It rained over night and still sprinkling a little bit. It isn't a deluge by any means but it is wet and it is soooooooo wonderful.

The bird feeding area I sat up next to the computer window is alive with birds. I have a woodpecker on the woodpecker hanging feeder and bunches of nuthatches, titmice, and purple house finches.
I love these little things. I think the finches sound like canaries, and the nuthatches are very fussy. LOL

Welcome Flowerchild, I hope you enjoy it here as much as I have. I don't know how I got along without all these wonderful people.

I am going to try to out to dinner tonight at Monterey. Probably will look retarded(not politically correct, I know, sorry) eating with my left hand in public. Have to decide if I care.....LOL Nope don't care.

Then the Oklahoma Texas basketball game is on at 8pm, can't miss that. GO OU!!!

well, I guess I will go on and try to find something to do. I think, gee I want to......and then realize I can't. depressing, but I am so much better, I just can't tell ya'.

Maria, my DH honestly believes that material and fabric are like a drug to me. I love to sit and look at it, feel it, create with it.

OZ, that is a beautiful pool.

Gravois Mills, MO(Zone 6a)

Same shot during the day. This one is from Better Homes and Gardens. The big attaction with this pool is there is a whole complex that includes a creek ,a pond and a guest house of over 1200 sq ft. The owner is a big republican and Bush stayed there during his first presidential campaign. My sons part was building all the water features and doing all the stone and concrete work. the house and landscaping were done by others.

Hi, everybody. Finally got a chance to get back on and saw where some of you said to tell a little about myself, so here goes. I am married and have two kids, Matthew, age 8, and Trinity, age 5. I volunteer at the school and also substitute teach now that the baby is in kindergarten. I also just this month rejoined the regular work force (just part time) at our town hall as an assistant clerk. My hubby started taking classes at the community college in a neighboring town and some of them are online, so we just got the internet for that, and my very first day on I found this site. I love it!! I was very worried about privacy and identity theft and all that kind of stuff, but I feel very safe here. I have to say that the majority of my internet time will be spent with all of you.
Other things about me..I just started trying to scrapbook. I like photography, but I still use the old 35 mm, haven't updated to a digital yet. We did just get a scanner, so once I figure out how to use it I will try to share some pics. I have a dog, Percy, an 8 year old Pug, and 4 cats, Oreo, Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Chunk, (Chip & Chunk for short) and the newest addition is Snickerdoodle (Snickers for short), (We really like cookies at my house!!) I also have anywhere between 10-15 strays that I try to keep well fed, but they all come and go at will. I also make crafts and do tole painting. I like to read and I do theater. I also got my Master Gardener certification just last year, but still need to get my volunteer hours in for that. I should be able to get lots of time in this spring.
I think that about covers it all.

Gravois Mills, MO(Zone 6a)

Flowerchild welcome and yes this is a very good and well managed site. I have had a background in patrolling on the internet as a volunteer and I can say thses ladies are some real fine women. But please do not throw all caution to the wind. Thats not advisable eve nin church.

Bartlesville, OK(Zone 6a)

Hi Flower! My DD lives in Lafayette, IN, she is in graduate school at Purdue. My DGD is 9 and will be 10 in May. I try to drive to Indiana every year for her birthday. Just had shoulder surgery, so I am trying very hard to recover so I can make it this year.

If you are interested in round robin swaps there is one just starting right now for newbies. I am in it cause I just joined in July and I thought I might still qualify. LOL
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/570681/

It is a REQUIREMENT to share pictures with us. Please be sure to check out the pets forum, that is where I spend my time when I'm not at coffee. Oh and hostas and and and.....LOL

Susan

Clinton, IN(Zone 5b)

I just got done installing some kind of photo software that came with the scanner, so I'm going to try to do one. It might take me a little while to figure it out!

Bartlesville, OK(Zone 6a)

I was just kidding about the requirement, but we do love pictures. LOL

A female cardinal just joined my bird group at the feeder. Wow she is twice as big as the other birds. They are holding their ground though, however, she is perched in the bowl and is not leaving. LOL

Oh well, boo hoo, I scared her away trying to take a picture.

Got her, not very good picture, kind of hard to take pictures through the screen.

The male cardinal showed up too. whooo hoooo

Flower - if all the "coffee GOBs & Gobettes got together and voted on "most perfect" addition to this thread, you would get a 99.9% rating! ( that 10th off is 'cause you really don't have enough dogs - yet!) Welcome to the clan!

I have been buried in my annual "rearrange the world" mode (I tend to do this every January). DH is in a tizzy trying to get some of my projects done, but I keep throwing new things at him, so we both have to sit back and collect our thoughts once in a while. We have, so far, completed the new shelves in my craft studio - work room and storage room, the new shelves in the pantry, the new shelves in the dressing room, and the new door into the front parlor. I have started on the new linens for the dining table - table cloths and napkins, and I think I have found material for curtains in the dining room as well. That will leave changing out the back door, putting in a new pantry door, and a door for the dressing room, and a lighted display area over the kithcen sink. Then I have to clean up the front parlor to make room for the new/old wood burning heater which will be converted to propane, and clear some wall space for a new clock that my DB is bringing. If I'm lucky all of this will be done in time to get ready for the outdoor spring clean-up, and a start on some new flower beds and new flowers to fill them.

Deep breath here! I have taken time to read all the posts and keep up with all that everyone is doing and how all are feeling, but I haven't gotten my head together enough to say anything.

I'll just say a prayer for all under the weather, and a cheer for all that has been accomplished. And hopefully I'll have a chance to comment more before too long. Meanwhile, love to ya all!

HEADS UP EVERYBODY!!!!! I may just be a lowly lurker, but DARIUS CAME TO VISIT ME!!!!!!! She and her sister Judy were on their way to Miami to visit family, and they just swung off the Interstate into my front yard. As if that wasn't enough......she brought me Begonias!

Darius is exactly like I thought she would be...sat right down on the floor and kissed the Doxies. She tells great funny stories too. What a gal!

I wish I had something potted to give her, but one look at my pitiful plants and I'm sure she understood why I couldn't share. Judy took some cuttings from my Mexican Flame vine and Darius took cuttings from my Orange Bougainvilla....some things just thrive in spite of everything.

Well, I could ramble on and on, but as everyone knows I'm not much of a talker (yeah, right). LOL I couldn't be any happier if my fairy godmother had come to visit!

OK..I scanned in my pic. It only took me five tries to get in where I wanted it to go, so now I'm going to try and send it to you all. It should be a pic of my two kids smelling my gerbera daisies. If not, I'm sorry, and let me know!!

Clinton, IN(Zone 5b)

Thanks!! Not too fast of a learner though, because I have a question. I'm noticing that everybody else has their zone listed under their names and I don't. How do I put that on my info??

Starkville, MS

Flower - forget the 10th off - those kids make up for it and then some!!! You're now a perfect 10 - but any extra dogs would still be welcome.

Maria - how are you feeling today. I loved looking at your quilts.

Roast, baked potatoes and asparagus with a salad and sourdough rolls will be ready for supper about 5:30. If you want something other than a cup of tea to drink ( and *water* for IO1!) bring it along - come join us.

Well have caught up on reading everything. I have been on the couch all day, but I am feeling much better. It was one of those 24 hr type things. I still have a headache, and other than being hungry seem to be better.

Flowerchild, I don't think we allow anybody as perfect as you in this group!!. Kidding, we all have many talents, and a lot of us retired, so that gives us more time to work in the garden. So do you live in town, or are you a country girl? I live on a 25 acre farm we do vegetable and flower gardens. I have a 9 year granddaughter, who visits us and her horses she has here. She says she is going to be a vet. They way she loves animals, that seems to suit her.

Well, I am going back to the couch, after being up for about an hour, not feeling too well again. Will check in later.

Clinton, IN(Zone 5b)

I'm in town, but like I said, it's a really small town. I wish I had 25 acres!!!!! I would go broke trying to cover it all in flower's, though. We have a good sized corner lot and I'm trying to eliminate all grass and have just flowers and groundcovers. I really hate to mow.

Hope you feel better.
