Your welcome, Michael and Kukiat!

Kukiat, I just sent you an email yesterday. If you or Michael or anyone has trouble reading or copying the list, I can send you the list by email. Just shoot me an email to let me know.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

By the way, Kukiat, Michael, and everyone, here is Jim Little's 2006 list that just came out also!

clare, is the Little list for unrooted cuttings? thanks for posting both lists

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Hi Nery, yes, unrooted cuttings is all Jim Little sells, but you can buy them and then send them to Luc to be grafted for $4 each (shipping not included).

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Are Luc and Carol settled in from all the hurricane damage yet?
It was pretty bad for them.
I wonder if hes up to taking a load of grafting orders yet.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Hi Michael,

Yes, they are doing great and preparing for a trip toThailand and India in March. Their grafting room is filled with grafts waiting to be shipped out, and they are always taking more grafting orders. They are offering rooted cuttings for the first time because they rooted (or are rooting) many of the branches that were broken in the hurricanes. This isn't a usual thing for them. They usually sell only cuttings or grafts. The rooted ones should be ready by June. Carol said she wants to make sure that they are very rooted before they are sold and sent out.

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Awesome!!

Bradenton, FL(Zone 9b)

I think that will blow my plumie budget fast this year.

Roger

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

LOL, Roger. Mine is gone already.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

There are a few I would be thrilled with!! LOL.

Clare, what is the benefit in gratfing them? Now since I rooted 3 of my big cuttings I think I am all that. Why graft them instead of rooting them?? Do they grow better? THANKS

LOL! Kell, you are all that, girl, so you just go ahead and think that! Some cuttings just plain refuse to be rooted and will rot every time. Some cuttings take a long time to root. Grafting cuttings gets you an instant root system in 30 days from a cutting, and it takes the guesswork out of whether a cutting will root or not. Some cultivars are famous for being hard to root so Florida Colors will only sell those as grafted plants. The root stock of grafted plants are often seedlings, which have a very strong root system, stronger that the root system of a rooted cutting. When Luc and Carol (owners of Florida Colors Nursery) had to endure several hurricanes last year, the ones that weren't broken or blown over were all grafted trees and so Luc feels that the grafted trees are actually stronger ones. I've had cuttings take longer than a year to root so, since it is only a few dollars more to order a grafted plant versus a cutting, I now order only grafted plants from Florida Colors. Last year, I sent Luc about 30 cuttings to graft for me. He charges $4 per graft plus actual shipping charges back to you. A few of them had been slow to root so I just figured that I would have them grafted. Some of them were sent to me by a friend in Thailand, and some were so expensive that I didn't want to take the chance that they wouldn't root. A few of them wouldn't be grafted either, and they rotted, but that doesn't happen with otherwise healthy cuttings. If a cutting is in very poor shape, it often can't be grafted either, but sometimes, Luc can save a cutting that is rotting by grafting it. My friend, Kukiat, is an expert grafter and can take the smallest piece of a cutting or even an eye and graft it to a root stock. When done this way, one single cutting can make many plants. Grafting is a fascinating and efficient way to propagate plumerias.

Clare,
You ALWAYS give such good explanations!!! I can tell you after these 3 I will only get rooted or order grafted ones from Florida colors.
Chantell

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Smart Gal!!
I loose so many that come as cuttings. :(
I only pay for rooted now.
I offer extra to have them rooted if they arent already.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Keep forgetting you'd mentioned that Michael. How often are folks receptive to that?

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Thanks so much for the kind words, Chantell. I order grafted when I can, and I plan to work on my grafting skills as I would like to be able to graft my own cuttings as well.

So sorry about the cuttings you've lost, Michael! It's especially hard to root cuttings this time of year without the benefit of a very warm greenhouse.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

THANK YOU Clare. I guess I had beginner's luck. I hope the cutting I just bought roots. Plus I bought some at the San Francisco Flower and Garden show. Oh dear. LOL

When ever I get to thinking I am all that, I seem to quickly get knocked back down on my big butt. Oh well........ lessons learned.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Kell, you just come to me when you get knocked down, and I'll build you back up again:-) You will have no problem rooting those cuttings that you just got, especially since the weather will be turning warmer soon. Just plant them in one-gallon containers in well-draining soil, water lightly, and put them on a hot surface like concrete in full sun. Mist frequenty and water when the soil looks dry. Water more frequently when you see leaves starting to grow. You'll do just fine.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Clare,
Re Luc and the grafting of cuttings - if I were interested would I just email him saying you'd mentioned his name or what/how should I go about it? I'm getting some cuttings any day from a generous trader and was thinking maybe this would be the way to go about it this time..LOL. Does the scent vary greatly on the white blooming Plumerias?
Thanks as always!!!!!! BTW, how's that new kitty doing?
Chantell

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Chantell, Luc and Carol don't often read or respond to their email. I think they get too busy to sit at the computer! The best way is to call them and let them know that cuttings are coming to be grafted and give them your credit card number for the $4 per graft plus actual shipping to you. Have the trader send Luc the cuttings directly, if possible, with a note that they are for you and indicating your mailing address, or you can send them as soon as you get them in the mail. Make sure your name is on the cutting's name tag.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

:( They're already enroute...so once I get the cuttings I'll follow up as you've suggested. Any thoughts on the white blooming ones? Or do their scents vary significantly? I know you had good things to say about the?Samoan Fluff (was it?) & I believe another white you thought had a good scent...have to refer back to my notes I kept of yours...LOL. :)

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Oops, sorry about that. I forgot to answer your questions about the whites and about Buddy:-) Buddy is doing great. Thank you for asking! Yes, white blooms can have a classic scent, a gardenia scent, a jasmine scent, a honey scent, etc. Yes, they do vary significantly. Some white are scentless -- such as Plumeria pudica. Samoan Fluff has a wonderful scent. I have another white that has a honey fragrance. Here are some good links which describe the fragrance of several different plumerias: http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/oc/freepubs/pdf/OF-31.pdf and which talk about fragrance: http://www2.ctahr.hawaii.edu/tpss/digest/hd102/hd102_3.html

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

You are such a sweetheart, Clare. :)

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Clare - thank you, thank you!! Glad to hear "Buddy" is doing well...you'll need to post some pics when you have time. :)

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Thanks, Kell! You are too and don't you forget that!

Thanks, Chantell! You are most welcome:-) Yes, Buddy is getting more and more comfortable in his new home, and I'll get a shot of him soon. He is a real sweetheart.

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Chantell,
Sorry Ive taken so long to reply.
I ask them to root them for me, if they seem intruded upon I ask how much they want to root it.
Usually its about $10.-
So far Ive only paid once.
And also... I dont ussually bid on 'cuttings'
I recieved a box today with 15 plumies, all real nice ones too.
In that box is a 22 inch Bonnie Fox cutting
I am scared to death!!
She is notoriously difficult to root and I stink at it.
I may send her to luc and ask him to make as many as he can of her.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

I'm thinking more and more that, that grafting thing is the way to go as both you and Clare have mentioned. I'm going to try my hand one more time with this Rainbow I have...still plenty of it left. I think you're right re only gettng rooted ones!!! Lesson learned!!! :)

I am just going to put in a small pitch for rooting your own: the thrill of seeing those roots on the stick is one of my greatest pleasures.
I have considered all my failed, rotten plumeria as 'plumeria lessons'
With every hobby or sport that you take up you have to:
a. pay for lessons and
b. accept a few failed attempts. Mastering the rooting process has been a source of great satisfaction and feeling of achievement.
BUT - I wouldn't practice on the expensive/rare ones... get that Bonnie Fox off to Luc, Michael!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

I agree with what Hetty said. It is very rewarding rooting things successfully, but as Hetty said, get that Bonnie Fox off to Luc, Michael! LOL! That is what I would do. Besides, with a big cutting like that, he can make you three or four plants for $4 each plus shipping.

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Has Luc successfully grafted a Bonnie?
I heard they were even tough to graft!

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

I just got off the phone with Carol and she says they have done Bonnie before.
Bonnie is one of the very difficult ones to graft she said.
I will be able to ask Luc to do as many as he can comfortably
So I have a good chance of having 1 and maybe even more take the graft.
Id love to have several of these.... soooo desirable!!
Has anyone ever rooted one off the Island chain?
Im soooo nervous LOL!!
Aint it silly?
When I opened my box I felt like I was 6 years old on Christmas day!
It was exhilerating!!
anyway..... Theyre off on Monday to Luc!! WOO-HOO!!
I also asked to be put on the list for ACW and another surprise I dont want to mention as yet.
Shall I list all the plumies I recieved in that box?
There are some Ive never heard of too.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Michael,
I'm excited for you - I'm not familiar with the ones you're referring to but if they get both you and Clare excited they must be something!! Mercy, I'm simply excited about a couple of leaves on some of the more common types.
If you have any links to thest types...post please :)
Thank you,
C

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Mike, that is great that you are excited, and I am excited for you. Yes, Luc can make you four or five grafts, and hopefully, they all will make it, but even if some don't make it, you have a good chance that some will. Yes, please! We want to see a list!

By the way, Luc accidentally mixed up his ACW and SCP trees. I ordered two ACW's and got two SCP's. I hope he has figured out which is which by now. He was supposed to send me an ACW once he figured out which one it was. Awe, c'mon. I want to hear your surprise!
