Wouldn't it be nice to have a place to go and be able to look at some maps we could reference. There are times when I am 'conversing' with someone and I wonder just where is that town located.A dot on the map for each town DG has a subscriber..... Or a map with average precipation? Elevations?.... The list could go on and on.

I don't know if such a thing is possible in a site like this, but if it were here I know that I would use it

Sounds like a good idea! I recently wondered what part of a certain state a certain DG member was in. I didn't bother leaving this site to find out. It would have been nice to just zip over to another page to find out.

Funny you should ask this question.
I've just started using the satellite maps to find out exactly where some DGers are, in relation to other big cities that I'm familiar with.
Many here post their location but so many towns are small and unknown to me.
What part of the state is such and such in.
Go to http://local.live.com/ and type in that town and state, then zoom OUT and all the area opens up to you. Very informative. Roads, rivers, mountains and the state boundaries are displayed for a great point of reference.

Well there is always that old fashioned item called an atlas!
I use mine all the time looking up where people live!

There is one in the Upper Midwest forum. It really needs to be at a state level to see clearly though.

Andy - good link. You could also use Mapquest. http://www.mapquest.com/

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Yes, those are all nice ideas, but what I had in mind (can't speak for shadyfolks) was something less specific. I was not looking for an address, just a town. The two links provided want a more specific location, I believe. I have used them both before.

And an old-fashioned atlas would be fine, but I don't have one at arm's reach. I suppose there's probably something called "atlas.com", but as the author of this thread noted, it would be great to have a map showing each town which has a member.

I'm still with you, shadyfolks. Sounds like a nice idea to me.

(Edited: Andy, maybe it's because I have dial-up, but what you suggested didn't work for me )

On another site I belong to we have a 'guest map' where members can note their location. It is kind of neat but it is not a big site in terms of membership. DG's membership would probably overwhelm such a map.

Mapquest will let you look just for a town--as long as you put in a city and a state it will do a map for you, you don't need to fill in the rest of the information.

This is what we have in the Midwest Forum.
I have them by State and then Region.

Ecrane, I went to Mapquest, entered a town and state, and it said I should "select or revise" my search.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Nap,

If you're seeing the message to select or revise, it means it found 2 (or more) places that had similar names to what you searched for. If you look underneath that message, you should see the word Suggestions, and under that there will be hyperlinks to the maps for the places it thought had similar names.

Like this: http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?searchtype=address&country=US&addtohistory=&searchtab=home&formtype=address&popflag=0&latitude=&longitude=&name=&phone=&cat=&address=&city=dubli&state=ca&zipcode=

Or if it just tells you to revise your search, then that means it doesn't know the town exists (maybe it's a really small town?) This is what it looks like if it doesn't find anything with a similar name:
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?formtype=address&country=US&popflag=0&latitude=&longitude=&name=&phone=&level=&addtohistory=&cat=&address=&city=xyz&state=ca&zipcode=

Hope that helps! I have never had a problem doing searches like this. If you have everything spelled right and there's no other towns with similar names, then it'll take you right to the map, but a lot of times there are towns that are spelled very similar and then you'll get the "select or revise" message.

Yes, ecrane, it did help. I now have a Mapquest icon on my favorites toolbar.

Thanks for holding my hand and walking me through it!

Kelly, I just found your link. That's a great thing you did! I like it! Wish we COULD do that for DG.

Someone might want to check out this website... http://www.frappr.com/

I did check out that link and it seems pretty neat! As was stated, I think we may be too big for something like that, but I do love the idea...and the frappr site.

Hi all,
Sorry to take so long to get back to thread I started. I realize that we can leave DG and go to lots of other sites to look up a map. I just thought it might be nice to have a link available (Like one of the tabs at the top of a page) in DG that could take you to see lots of different types of maps. Not just ones that shows were another subscribers live, but say elevations, precipitation.... (others interesting facts we could use as a reference) pertaining to this gardening website--easy access, was what I was thinking.

Shady,
It's a great idea.

Anita,
That frapper works good. I just put my page linked into my DG homepage. I think that does the job.
