A specatular parade takes place in the capital New Delhi. India became a Republic in 1950. It's a national holiday.

Have a very Happy Holiday!

Thanks. Our office department club has arranged a short picnic, locally. There's a lake just over a mile from home and so we are all gathering there for the holiday.

Happy Republic Day!

I hope the picnic was a great success and lots of fun! (And good foods and goodies, too!!)

Does this holiday always come on the 26th of Jan? If so, from now on I'll know when it is...(day after my b-day).

Thanks friends. Oh yes, we had an enjoyable day. But the food was not up to the expected mark. All of us enjoyed the outing. My colleague has taken a few shots with his digicam and will try to get it from him and post here.

Yes, Republic Day always will be on 26th Jan. If it coincides a Sat/Sun, then we lose that official holiday.

Actually that spot is just 2.6km from home eastwards. It's called Karanji Lake. Birds like Pelicans, Storks and a good number of other birds have made this small lake their homes. The bird aviary is 60 metres high and it is another attraction.

I also came upon this late. The day sounds lovely, wishing the food had been up to expectations. I haven't had Indian food for years-
Allu Chat ( I know I spelled that one wrong) and the sweet cake-like desserts in syrup were my favorites--I think I will check out the local restaurant soon.
I look forward to seeing the photos, if you are able to get them.

Yes, I think I'll post the picture sometime today. Watch out.

Aloo is potato. The sweet dish you are talking about is called 'gulab jamun' [gulab means rose as a bit of rose essence is added for flavour]. It's a popular sweet, easy to prepare.

This was in 2004. Am starting a new thread with latest pictures, as promised.

Yes , those are the ones-might you have the recipe for the gulab jaman?
The folks that we used to visit, have since retired and we lost contact-as happens so often with folks who work in the social service agencies.

Oh yes, MG. I'll be too happy to share the recipe for Gulab Jamun. But only after I get it from my DW! Stay on.
