My 2 cents
The dog ate my hwork reminds me of a Bill Cosby piece when I used to listen to him on records(I,m really not old in the big scheme of things)
It seems Bill and Harold were jumping on the beds till they broke them..The father came in the room and said "who broke the beds?" they replied "a burglar,he came in thru the window"the father said"theres no window in this room" The kids replied "He brought it with him"
I'm a little upset by an email
I love it!
Susan, I'm still planting seeds you sent me when I first joined back in 2002! We've all been chastised by folks who have made up their minds that people are out to cheat them. That has to be a sad way to go through life.
Ove the last four years, I've received seeds that were not only the labeled with the wrong species, but the wrong genus! It just gives me a chuckle. I'll tell a trader if I think they need to know, but often I just let it go. If it is critical that I receive the exact seeds I trade for, I order them from a seed company, and believe me, they can make mistakes, too.
I've caught myself on a few errors in my labeling, too, and I've been accused of sending chaff in a concerted plot to bilk members of seeds in trade. Ah, well, it's all part of the game.
We have that option to post feedback and an option to rebuttal feedback. We can choose to trade or not trade. I keep a file of failed or unsatisfactory trades, so I can refer to it if I'm contacted again. There aren't many names, but it keeps me from being dissatisfied twice.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who has made boo boos labeling stuff and traders have been forgiving(even when I mixed up trades and sent the wrong stuff to two people).
All of the traders from the thread were excellent and sent generous trades. The guy who sent me the email wasn't involved in the trade, that's what really floored me. I don't think he trades at all. I havent' seen him post on the seed trading forum.
Now I need to trade for garden stretchers to have room for my new stuff! I have the seed cups sitting all over the window sill and the garden tub in the bathroom. DH said "I can tell it's spring, you've got dirt everywhere" and my daughter says "mom, please don't put dirt trays on the kitchen counter when my friends are coming over." Oh the joy of teenagers!
ROFL!!!!! Susie DH is grumbling already too. I am moving the hurricane survivors out to garage(taking up his space) now that they have perked up and started growing to make room for the seeds trays/cups in the Florida Room The garage is staying at 55 min. so far. When I know it will be real cold I do laundy on those night to help warm it up lol.
A great idea Donna! Those dryers can sure warm up a room.
Callalily,
"All things happen for the good". You received one nasty note and then a flood of encouragement--I think you got a bargain, my dear! I am so glad to have found my way among you here at DGs.
ddensmore
Girl you gotta know by now how much we appreciate you. I have not spent a lot of time on DG lately. I used to need a daily fix of it. Got remarried, moved and got a new job. I missed this whole thing and just caught wind of it now.....I remember you trading with me and I really appreciated it. I think gardening should be fun! Nobody should be a drag and criticize a simple honest mistake. Were all human.
Thanks for being very generous with me in the past and I hope we can do more trades some time in the future
Teresa
Hi calalily your wanted here , remember you can't please everyone all the time some people thrive to make others feel bad or belittled ,When its really there problem!! Hang in there with us..Happy gardening to you and hope to meet up with you along the way..........Sharon
Weezingreens You spelled bulk (bilk). DrDon, I'm sure that is not an Elliot!!! Please try harder to get it right!!!!! Ncgardenaddit, cows do eat more than grass! Milissa-Ohio, I'm sure I've heard of Datra Zinnias, I'm positive. LOL Enuff.... fun time, I'll take trades from any of ya, anytime. I've been at DG for alittle over a year, and y'all are great.. even got a little BDay greeting from the DrDon, so sweet... so lets just let the nitpickers.. picknits... and all of us laidback flower lovers pick flowers.... Luv ya..
Viv
Susie I have just a couple of things to say. You are the sweetest, most generous, and thoughtful person. Don't let ignorance get you down. You are a way better person than that dumb patootie!! We love you!!
Melanie
Well after reading this thread I am becoming hesitant to post anything.
I am a newbie and since I have nothing to share right now hope that people will be kind enough to send me some of their seeds with the promise I will give to another newbie in the future.
I just do not care to become foder for the 5% if I make honest mistakes.
Last person I heard of who was perfect was nailed to a cross.
Stacey
Stacey, I don't believe there are any 'crosses' in DG, unless they are used for growing sweet peas and morning glories. Dave's Garden has experienced a fast rate of growth in the last few years, so some growing pains are to be expected. I think it is important to remember that all trades are entirely voluntary, and if a trade doesn't feel right, it's perfectly fine to decide against it. No one is obliged to trade or send SASE.
It's a bit difficult to deal with traders who are not subscribed, if the deal goes sour. They are only available by D-mail, and there can be a few days lag in receiving the message if they don't check their D-mail. (Dave does forward D-mail to your E-mail address if it is not picked up within a reasonable time.)
Posting feedback is a great way to voice praise, dissatisfaction, and concern. Every feedback comment offers rebuttal, so it seems pretty fair to me. I don't use this option often enough, since it is helpful to others who are contemplating trades.
I welcome useful criticism. The other day someone d-mailed me to let me know some of my collected seeds from a double poppy produced single poppies. That was useful information for me, and I did not consider it criticism... just good info. Now I know that this cultivar isn't likely to come back true, and I can mention that in my tradelist description.
Sometimes it is important to know the botanical names. Common names can be pretty general, and they differ from different countries, and even different parts of the U.S. For instance, 'Ice Plant' would be another name for 'Livingston Daisy' here, but in the Southern States, I think it is something quite different. Terms like 'Campion', 'Harebell', 'Pink' mean 'Silene/Lychnis, Campanula, and Dianthus to me, but they don't tell me what kind (species or cultivar). It could be perennial, biennial or annual. I will have no way of determining how hardy or suited to my climate it might be. For me, having the botanical names means a lot, but not always necessary. Pictures are a great help, as well.
Dont worry about it Paul
wow! I'm a bit scared trading my seeds.... I am new to DG as a subscriber and also new to collecting seeds for trade. I dont even have that many varieties to trade. I for one dont really care so much for names/genuses... Is that really very important for a hobby that releases my daily work stress? I enjoy gardening to relax me and not to stress over a name or genus etc... I would be more than happy if someone sends me seeds for free... and eventually do the same for another in the future...eileen
Eilene, you are probably of a like mind with the majority of the members here on DG. Free seeds are free seeds. Even a trade that leaves you with a mis-labeled may not be an issue. You can determine how important it is to the other trader before you exchange seeds. If their tradelist is filled with botanical names, they'd probably like to know the botanical names of yours. If they don't, you're probably safe to trade without worry. Don't let anybody make you feel shy about trading. Like anything else, you just have to use your horse sense.
eileenbaney, you have been here way longer than I, there is no cause to be afraid, most DG's are really geat, I just started gardening this year (in may) and have done lots of trades and sasbe. its alot of fun. I have received so much more than I could possibly give. All the help I received getting started and support I wouldn't have had, had I not joined DG. They say there is always a few bad apples in the bunch. And when I come across a bad apple I toss it out and pick another one lol.
Calalily, I am sorry that you had to experience such an unpleasant sourpuss. I have never had the pleasure of trading with you, but from what everyone else has said in support of you. I would trade in a heart beat. Some people just like to stick there nose in where it don't be long, but eventually it's gonna get broke. At least that's what my dear dad always says :o) So keep on keeping on and as they say what goes around, comes around. But when it comes back around, it is usually 10 X's worse.
I think DG and gardener's are Great....
Connie
thanks Weezingreens..
that gave me courage to trade.. dont mean to be rude to gardeners who know their craft ..I'm sure it's not an easy thing to keep up with all these botanical terms...I respect their point of view...
I am getting some free seeds from someone here in DG... she has a list but dont really know what they are... they sound pretty though..lol... well, that's why I joined DG... to learn more about the plants and flowers I am growing and get first hand info from fellow gardeners. I am also learning to make sure that I label the plant I am planting with its right botanical name....
You cant really take this serious, I think that all of the people I trade with are special and kind. But things get lost, goodness a typo... someone must be kidding. THere are many sites out there to trade in and many of them are full of drama. There is also the element of life, family emergencies, illness and other things that come into the picture. Those who know me will back up that I dont count the number of seeds in each envelope...
make tons of rules.I have lost a few robins and still continue to trade.
Learn and trade wtih those people who you feel are fair, dont gossip...
ignore the drama and just enjoy sharing and meeting those that are special, there are tons here. Let Dave know if you really have a problem
I actually had a lady from North Carolina, send me so many nasty e mails from another site that I had to report it to the local police deptartment. And one site that many know of is full of drama and sponsor disney... pathetic games if your not cool enough for them.
oops. think I had a typo in the first line... ahhhh,,, with... ha ha...
I have traded with you tons of time and its always a pleasure.

thanks connie, now I'm more confident to trade my "borrowed" datura seeds.lol..I joined DG 2 years ago just because I needed info on one of the plants my husband gave me... after that, I didnt visit DG again for a long while... until i was so bored at work and thought of searching for a plant info. then I remembered I did sign up but forgot my username and password...to cut it short, I'm back and finally decided to subscribe ..if I knew then what I know now, I would have subscribe 2 years ago...I wouldn't have killed my calamondin and satsuma plants..among other things....lol
and to calla..i think what you are doing is great... specially to newbies like me who dont have any or little seed to trade... keep it up...we need you:)
Cala,
Go out in the back yard, dig a hole, put the dmail in the hole, add some compost and bury it. Some people just have too much free time to pick on others............
LOL! Good idea...maybe plant something on top of it for good measure.
I suppose the best way to deal with someone who is upset and seems a bit obsessive is to have a bit of compassion. After all, there are no doubt issues that have led them to feel the need to champion their cause with inappropriate intensity. To that sort of person, one usually says, "Get a life!", and I suppose there is some truth to that.
If you work a job where you have no power, if you have had bad trades and assume the worst, if your marriage is on the rocks, if your teenagers have facial tattoos, if your shoes are too tight, if you got stuck in traffic for two hours... any of these things could precipitate a nasty email. We've all written some scathing letter, then hit the delete button before sending. Some folks just miss that last step.
As long as we can look back at ourselves and feel we have behaved well and treated someone fairly, we shouldn't take these things to heart. If we haven't been fair, but have tried to make amends without success, we should take these things to heart. If we haven't behaved fairly and there is no way to make amends, we can apologize and try to avoid doing it again. Other than that, there is nothing to be done, and if the other party wants to vent, so be it... water off a duck's back.
Perhaps whoever said that to you said it from THEIR OWN doings. This place has the best bunch of folks around... except for one that we don't know the name of.
I'm kinda new to all this, and have only this year started doing seeds. But I do intend to get into the trading game.
Take care all!!!!!
I have to tell you, that is traders who have know me for along time, I was treated poorly on another site, by a sick.. and I say sick human, who posted thru the internet that I had ten names and addresses all thru so callif and was a fraud...changing my sign on couldnt even rid me of the person.
have to admit that this person really upset me to the point that I had to take her letters and e mail to the police. If she had lived local she could have been arrested. She was a resident of North Carolina.
But a reminder to myself, that I am honest a a good person was all it took.. actually tons of reminders and that feeling is over.
Also like many others have said, the negative person has issues.
And you cant get sucked into them.
cala and everyone here is great!
Calalily,
Don't give this person a second thought....what comes around goes around!
This individual should realize.... we as humans do at times make mistakes...that's why the eraser was invented!
Jane
