Just wanted to say hello to fellow sinningia and violet growers. I just moved into a new house and im ordering plants almost everyday. I just ordered my first sinningia..and waiting for its arrival. I also have started an african violet collection. ..as I was on the road for a few years.... I was plantless ;0( I am also trying out steptocarpus for the first time. I have one plant..which is called "pink flamingo".I've had very good success with my violets in the past and im hoping I do as well this time. Y'all have some beautiful plants!

Well Violet grower, welcome! Share photos, it's mandatory, we make everyone share!

Nancy, sorry, you will likely have to remind me of that- there are so many of us and we do go by these DG "nicknames".

Since David was kind enough to share his comments regarding my Sinningia Leu. I removed some of the soil from the top and found the tuber had gotten huge! All this time I thought it wasn't doing anything it was growing it's tuber! There was like a 2nd tuber, which came off w/ very little effort so I put it in it's own little starter pot and we shall see if it does anything.
David the little tuber had some small roots which I kept attached, do you think it will grow? Hope so.

When you seperate the two tuber did you left it dry before you replanted.

David
I suspect that I should have, but no, I didn't. Should I take it out of the soil?
April

Madison, WI(Zone 4b)

David -
I was transplanting my sinn of Los Angeles today into my own soil mix when I broke the plant off from the tuber. I have sunk the plant into its own pot and know that it will grow new roots.
I rinsed off the tuber and know that I need to let it dry for at least 24 hrs. Since it is fairly good size, can I split it in half or is it better not to. Also, how deep should it be. Completely covered with mix or just partially? As you can tell, I am a newbie at this.
I figure maybe someone else will learn from this if I post here and not privately.

Now just watch it for now or you can take it out the water and let the dirt dry out this would be the same things also.

Nancy

Its up to you what you like to do with the tuber if you going to cut in half, cut down the center of the eye and leave it out overnight to dry then pot it up.

So long as you leave the skin on the tuber without any tears of the skin you can repot it.........When you have a open wet open skin this is what you need to dry overnight.

Its better to cut off the crown than breaking it when you breaking it off this is when you can damage the eye of the tuber.

Well my wallet is getting thinner but my violet/strep collection is growing! I just have babies right now but as soon as they start to bloom I will start taking pictures. I have some starting to bud. I can see now I am going to need more room! I'm thinking of purchasing one of those "hothouse" shelves thingies. With the plastic that goes over the whole thing. So far in my collection i have:
Ma's Blue Turtle
Ma's Watermelon
Ness Ruffled Skies
Iced Pink Flamingo-strep
Episcia-Suomi(yellow flowers)
Blue Beard-strep
Bristol's Paw Print-strep
Minniature sinningia-dont know the name of it
Thanks everyone for the wonderful information you share. I have learned so much since joining dave's garden! And yes violet_treasure its a WONDERFUL find!

I love all the sinningia photos. Such charmers! Thought I would post one of my favorite miniature sinningias.... "Isabelle". I really like the blossom contrasted with the black green foliage.

Same here, April. They are just darling. Another cutie I like is 'Party Dude'. I think I am partial to spotted throats and dark leaves.

Hey Snowrose!

Beautiful photos....are they all miniatures?

TFS!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Hey Joanne....hope you are having a nice weekend. Yes, all the ones I posted are miniatures. I grow them wick watered under lights. Really very easy and a nice addition to the violets and streps. They do seem to like extra humidity.

Drumheller, AB(Zone 2a)

Hey Snowrose!

Oh I am just fine...I didn't know you could wick water them....I would have thought the tubers would rot. Do you grow them in a regular AV mix or is it a lot leaner mix.

I am having a great weekend and you? Went to about 6 yard sales and picked up a few nifty little trinkets to put some babies into.

I have White Sprite, Pusilla (so tiny and cute too) Peaches but hasn't bloomed yet, Wood Nymph and I have a HUGE tuber that is about 40 years old....I had that one given to me.

I love the miniatures the best though. I just repotted all mine and they are so happy they are blooming their little heads off like crazy.

Just got back from a backyard barbeque party. We are having the nicest day we've had in weeks. The temps are much cooler and is so pleasant. Sounds like you were having fun with your sales. I like unique and different containers myself.

I use what I call my 'wick mix' and use it on just about everything I grow (gesneriads that is). My basic formula is 1 part Pro Mix or any good bagged soil without fertilizer. Scotts for violets is pretty good, too. To that I add 1 part vermiculite and 2 parts Perlite. Now for wicking Streps, I add a little more Perlite so is very light and gritty. I

That is awesome you have a 40 year old tuber! I
mostly propagate my sinningias from cuttings.

The tiny micro mini sinningias like White Sprite and Pusilla are just too cute!

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Los Angeles has been on my list and your picture has sold me!
Thanks for the photos!

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

Hi Snowrose;
Love your pictures, looks like you have quite a few mini sinns, me too. They have been my favorites for years, but i do grow streps & other gessie's.I also wick mine.as long as the soil has alot of pearlite to make it light they won't usually rot.let me know which ones you have & maybe we can do a swap if you like.i just took cuttings from about 8 different plants.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

mrsbonnie....Most likely the only one I have extra of to share is 'Little Wood Nymph'.I would have to put some down to root but should be ready in a few weeks unless you want cuttings to root yourself. Very easy as you know. I would be happy to send you some. Like this one as it blooms almost constantly. Considered a micro mini.

Hi There;
I would love it. I do cuttings very well.I can also send you some if you like.i love getting new ones, especially the one you just pictured, just adorable.thanks so much, i really appreciate this.

Time to bump this thread up! Here is a picture of some of my blooming sinningia.
Left to right: Los Angeles - Ozark Rosey Freckles (in the back) - Little Miss Kitty (very difficult to get a good photo but what a cutie) - and in the front is Glory Be.

I no longer have flowers on Los Angeles. I just put some pollen on the two flowers from Glory Be. Hope they take! I have been having difficulty polluniating the sinningia or else the seed pots are so small that I can't see them.
Nancy

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Wonderful you are hybridizing sinningias, Nancy! Is it difficult to do?

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Those are so gorgeous! I have glory be but as of yet it hasn't bloomed for me. Your photos are so much nicer than most of the vendor photos!
