Regarding the slowness, double posting, etc of DG

There have been a lot of posts reporting various problems on the site, specifically periods of extreme slowness, usually coupled with duplicate postings. I've read the reports and I very much appreciate everyone who took the time to report it!

I've been working on this for some time. It's a pretty big mystery to me, actually, but I am seeing some specific things that are bringing the server to a halt. Basically it happens when something is run that takes a very long time (like a search, for example). Once it starts running, it won't let anybody else write to the database.

Therefore, if someone is searching, for example, then nobody can post anything until the search is completed! That's braindead but it's how the database software that we're using has been working.

So, starting now I am experimenting with using a different database type for the forums. It's now using InnoDB (instead of MyISAM) which does row-level locking instead of table locking. This means that folks can post while other things are happening (no queueing all the actions up - they all happen simultaneously).

I'm going to be watching the server closely today and will see if the changes made any difference. I'm hopeful they will.

Didn't understand a word, but thank you for looking out for us. I posted a little while ago and it went MUCH faster then yesterday.

While you're at it, I'm wondering if you made a button to go to an 'advanced search' form to search the forums, if that would help. As it is now, when I use the search box on the forums tab, it searches all of the forums and THEN brings up a form to narrow the search by forum, user etc.

That's already done - just click on "Search" in the menu bar while you're in the forums. :-)

oops, didn't realize that, I thought that button was an "okay, do the search" button.

Dave,

Thanks for explaining what's going on. Doesn't mean I understood Everything,,,but got most of it,,,lol.

I've been experiencing difficulty off and on today. Sometimes I post and I get thrown out into cyberspace somewhere and other times it goes right through.

Thanks for your efforts to correct it.

Dave,,this must be very frustrating for you.

lisa,,,I have the same image going through my mind,,,,
Kelly

No, it's not frustrating at all, actually. :) The reports in this thread are caused by me starting and stopping the database server. :)

I have noticed it is when I am posting a picture that it strains so to do it. Takes a long time. If I am just posting words, it zips along. Hope that observation helps some.

Dave,

That's good to hear. I for one am extremely glad that you have patience with this.

Now I have this mental picture of you happily plucking away at the keyboard and seeing this all as a wonderful challenge,,,lol

Kelly

Yes, that's it!

I musta been really bad....I've not been to DG for over 24 hours and I just got home and when I did get on I had parse error trauma. This the first time I could get to a forum.

As for the double posts, something I personally noticed the other day-when you try to post something DG sort of freezes. It never says your post went. If you get out and and back in, most of the time it is there. SO, if people are stopping it then hitting send again, it is posting over and over.

I have been having problems too, but not really like anyone has described. It seems like everytime I try to go to a page, the page will start to load and then it will go to a white screen that says the page isn't available. Is this DG or my computer?

Acton, CA(Zone 8b)

still some repeated posts in the plant files and forums... no big deal I guess.

I think Dave is still working on it.

I think we need to send Dave some chocolate chip cookies if he is going to be glued to the computer long enough to fix these problems.
