My Bloom Protectors- pics- Kell

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

I made these micronetting covers for my brug blooms that I am saving pollen from and no bug can destroy them...Pink Velvet is fixing to bloom for me..The plus side of these coverings is I can watch my blooms grow too...
Updated Jan.15,2005-Pink Velvet bloomed....scroll down and see it..I took off the baggie to show the bloom..

Very Well Done!
And thought out. Maybe you should go into the Brug Bloom protectors business. Please follow up with photos when they are in bloom.

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

Well I have traded these for other stuff for those who wanted them...they are very light weight and doesn't pull the blooms down...so if anybody wants to trade..just send me a D-mail..
I have used these on other types of blooms as well..lol...

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

You need to enter this on the thread of things you have done for your brugs. LOL.
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/567819/

Too clever Nadine. I am so impressed. My only suggestion is to change the ribbon to pink. LOL.

Listen, if you want some different pollen, I may have some later on this month. I have Sexy Lady right now if you want some. I might have Susanne also.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Really a good idea.

Would you please post pics when they bloom? I just got a plant of
KBS X Pink Velvet going. Would like to know what it is. Especially since I have seeds for a couple of different Pink Velvet crosses.

Jeanette

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

Pink??...mmm I can do that..LOL...sorry the fabric doesn't come in pink either!...LOL...will check out the other thread...
Kell, What does Sexy Lady look like? I am still learning names to these brugs..
Sure I would like to try that ...

That is way too cool. Now I can see how they are a great plus for keeping your crosses uncontaminated.

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

That is right and my flowers don't get messed up either...

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Those are pretty cool. And that Pink Velvet is beautiful. I am definitly going to get some of these seeds going so maybe they will bloom this summer.

What do you want to trade? I could use one right away for my Sang seedpod.

Kell, it is about 3 inches long and if I put a tape measure around it at the fattest part it would probably be about 3 inches around and dreal lumpy with seeds. What do I watch for now? Expect? Does that seedpod turn dark? Should I put something qround it to catch the seeds?

I am having a terrible time posting on Dave's. I will try again but if only 1 post, I will try later to post the other pics for Nadine and Jeanette. Dave's sure hates me today!

Oh Jeanette, how exciting for you. So you have a nice sang pod!!! I had a huge sang pod though my Vulcanicola pods were small. What I found, and I did not have many, was that my pods never showed they were ripe. I let some go for 12 months!!! And when I opened them they were germinating inside. So I would go by the calender, and at 9 months cut a little hole in the side and see if the seeds are brown.

But since I have such limited experience with sangs, let me ask Jeanne to take a look here and give you her advice. She is on vacation right now but will be back soon.

See after 12 months, I finally peeked in. The outside never changed. The sang pod walls were so thick.

Jnette, I can send ya one..The baggie will catch the seeds if the seedpod opens up...Are ya in the address exchange if not..D-Mail me..I'll get one out in Tuesday mail...they are so light weight... I even use one on a Datura seedpod so they wouldn't go fly in other places I don't want them at..lol..

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

OK, after 10 minutes of straining to post it finally posted it after I had given up and closed it. LOL

Here it is once opened after 12 months gestation. Seeds had germinated inside the sang pod.

Well Dave's won't let me post a picture so I will later. but...

You really do not need anything to catch seeds on brugs, they do not explode when ripe like some do. Have you ever touched a fat, ripe pod on an impatiens? BOOM! All over. I love touching them. Brugs are more apt to dry and the pod shrivels up. You need a catcher with datura seeds too.

Nadine's great invention is great for putting on before your bud opens. You can then go in and get your pollen and pollinate the flower and not worry about bees or moths sneaking in for a undesirable pregnancy!!

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

Sheeze, Kell, are ya on a broken record somewhere!!...LOL..Talk about things coming in two or threes...???LOL...

I haven't tried to post a photo, but things are running pretty slow for me.

Moodene, LOL, Vossner is too. What do you want for trade? Even tho Kell says it doesn't need any I would like to have one anyway, and no Vossner, I won't steal her idea, I would still like to have one.

My Sang seedpod is nothing like that thing you sent the picture of Kell. Yours looks like something from outer space. Mine isn't a thick walled pod at all. it is just like the tube the flower comes out of.

After seeing yours I wouldn't think mine was even a seedpod except that you can not only see it all lumpy with seeds, but I can feel them too. But then you said that was after 12 months on yours. Maybeeeeeeee

LOL, Moodene I did that on purpose. Jeanette

I had some problems lately with posting also. I gave up earlier.
Nadine, Thanks for following up with the blooms. Looks fantastic and how creative you are. Best of luck with your pollen collection.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I can't believe Dave's posted them all. I was in such a hurry to go out and waited just to make sure they were not posted before I started over. People are having trouble all over. On the rose forum someone had 20 repeat posts!!!

Jeanette, I have no clue if all sang pods look like that. All mine did from the Vulcanicola and my sangs. And yep.....12 months. LOL

I may buy some from Nadine also. They would be really handy when the bees start to buzz!! In the past if I am worried, I have taken masking tape and closed the flower after I pollinate it.

Nadine, Sexy Lady is one of Susie's crosses I grew for her. I love it. It is the easiest brug I have, grows nsturally to a great standard. Mite resistent, blooms its heart out and is a great shape. So sexy, everyonecan make pods with her. And roots just by tossing a piece on the ground. Gently a nodder, low calyx too (no neck except for winter bloom). It is in full bloom now even though it is winter, unlike all my others. I just love the big blooms. It is the focal point in my courtyard now for 2 years, maybe 3.

WOW!!! What a beautiful color brug!!..I am hoping some of mine is paying attention this year that I want them to grow up and be pretty too..I have a 4 acre yard (front and back yard) then got the other 15 acres of woods around me....hope this year will be a great year for growing brugs and my other plant collections.....
Kell or my other plant friends ....ya'll don't have to buy the baggies cuz I rather trade them..I made a bunch for a friend who pollinates her brugs but she had a hard time keeping her flowers taped up cuz of the rain getting the name tape wet and coming apart so I invented the baggies..and she can put the name of her cross on a plastic tag and put it in a pocket that I made for the tag to go in so she can't lose it ...I'll make one to show ya what I am talking about...and post a pic of it...
Like I said...if ya'll want some baggies...just send me a D-mail...LOL...
By the way, Kell...I have some of those Trash Can x Kyle's Pink brug seeds growing here..lol..that I got from you...hope they bloom this year..

You are so smart. What a great idea. Jeanette

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Nadine, are you sure those seeds are from me???

That is so CLEVER!! And with a name tag pouch. You are too smart, I agree with Jeanette. And on pink, LOL. You are so funny!!!

I hope you have the best year, Nadine! You are so lucky to have a nice piece of land. If only I could have land and live where I do!

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

Yep, they came from you about 2 year ago and I couldn't plant them right away due to my mom's failing health..so I planted them last year and some are up..LOL..I was using those to learn how to start brug seeds and got the hang of it..

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

So, how do you start them Nadine? I think Kell is using rockwool now. I am peeking through her windows to see. LOL

Jeanette

Sunset Beach, NC(Zone 8a)

Moodene, that is great! I'm with everyone else......go for the patent (and hurry!). That's one of those things that are "why didn't I think of that?"

Kell, your pic is absolutely gorgeous! What a focal point and what color! Tell me, am I correct that you say that Sexy Lady is prone to grow as a standard? What kind is it? If it's a sang, it's really too hot here in the summer for her, but if not a sang, then she definitely goes on my "want bad" list. Just wonderful.
Barbara

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

Jnette, I start my seeds in orchid moss..in containers that have lids on them...out in the seed hoop hothouse..LOL..

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

What is orchid moss Nadine? Can I see a picture? Pretty pink please. LOL

To be honest I really can't remember the cross, Barb. There is a tag somewhere in that 25 gallon pot it is. In the winter it looks like EP for it shows its neck. So maybe EP X L'A. But I am just saying that. I should go back and look at my old posts. At any rate, it is not a sang.

The color could be darker and go up the corolla tube. I am hoping people will use it to breed with because of all its positive attributes and get one like it darker. Though it could be darker grown elsewhere, here pinks can be light. The first year it was darker.

Barb, it grew so tall as a seedling and formed a great canopy. It then suckered 2 - - 8 to 9 ft standards. I never cut off my standards to be until they reach the height I want or until they Y. If left on the mother they grow so fast up. It never puts out side shoot so it has a pretty trunk.

One I cut up for cuttings and the other I rooted for another standard. That one has a 8 ft suckers on it now that needs to be cut off. I also have another tall sucker on the mother again that flowered late summer into fall while still on the mother. I am lazy!!

I have sent out some of these last fall. I will be sending more out. I would hate for such an easy brug to die out. The problem is I am so pathetic. I always have 1000 things I rather do than package up stuff. You never know though. every once in a while I get it together and do a bunch at once.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Kell, I would love a start. I have seedlings that bloomed, but I would love a piece of 'Mom'. SL x EP #3 bloomed inside for me for Thanksgiving. I think one in the gh has a volunteer pod, I'll have to check on that later.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Very pretty Linda! I will love to see it in summer if it is that dark at Thanksgiving. I hope they have the easy trait!!

Sunset Beach, NC(Zone 8a)

Well, Kell, if you get it together one day and are in the mood for stuffing little boxes w/ baby brug cuttings I sure hope you'll keep me in mind. I'd love to have one. Think I'll send you a dmail so you'll have this on file. I know what you mean about getting things done........I don't work as much as I used to and it seems I'm way too busy.....can't get anything done. What's with that?
Barbara

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

Kell, here is a pic of the orchid moss that I use...it promotes faster growth when potting seedlings and small palnts..I will post a pic of baby brug seedling that popped up on Jan 12th..growing in orchid moss..
