Two flowers, One plant

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Can someone explain what possible reasons would have this AV producing two different color flowers from the same plant? The flower on the left is more of a pink center, the one of the right, more solid and thought the photo might now show it, it has the most lovely orchid edged to it.

I was thinking culture, but then wondered 'sport'?

And here's the whole enchilada.

probably genetic....light?....more food on one side?....it's a handsome plant...congrats.

It's very lucky to still be alive. I have had some watering issues lately, as in over watering.

Here's a shot of my oldest AV. I have one other that I got at the same time this summer, which I have removed one pup and have several leaves down from when I overwatered it a few weeks ago. Have roots already, so if I loose the mom, I will hopefully have pups coming soon. But the very cool thing about this av is that it's my FIRST time to have one rebloom. It hasn't bloomed yet, but down under the newer leaves is a bunch of buds forming. They circle around the crown, down about two or three levels of leaves. (patting myself on the back!) It's in a self waterer and although the top of the soil generally is bone dry, my water meter shows that is is plenty moist at the bottom of the pot. It is very very happy.

another memory from the 60's..do you folks put collars around your leaves etc?..and if they are growing DOWN>..does that mean one is giving too much light?

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

JB, I'm so new at this that I'm happy no matter what way the leaves grow, so long as they are not turning to mush, or drooping due to overwatering.
I'm trying so hard to get a photo of the buds, but my camera wont focus, even with the macro setting on! Grrrrr.

I don't know what causes this -- some sort of genetic instability? -- but I just had it happen here, too!

The flowers on the left opened first, and remained this deep purple color until they dried up a couple of weeks later. This is the first time this plant had bloomed, and when it did I was very excited, since I'm pretty sure it is an offspring of a plant I thought I'd lost, 'Purple Ruffles.' Then the paler, lavender-pink blooms on the right opened, and I didn't know what to think! One of the lighter blooms actually opened with a very distinct white pinwheel, but later faded away to a fairly solid color pansy.

Maybe I'll put down a leaf or two and see what happens.... No matter the color, I like the large size and ruffled edges of the blooms!

Edited to add that this photo is very close to the bloom colors on the plant -- the lighter blooms are in no way due to the flash or some other trick of lighting.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

begonia i'm pretty handy with cameras..what kind do you have?

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Wow Critter that is pretty neat.

Well this is the best I managed to get for the bud shots. But used my nifty arrow tool in photoshop to point out the (hopefully) obvious.

I have a Sony, It's an older (8/2003) Cybershot 5 MPX, smart zoom (model DSC-P92)

I love it and it generally behaves and does what I want, I get some pretty good shots. I bought my DH one too, but his is tinier and 'cuter' than mine. I think his basically does the same.

well thats a very good camera....i have several mostly casio and canon power shot....the casio has a good macro on it..and 32x zoom....

It might be just the nature of the plant. I have Raphsody Rose by Optimira. It's blooms are two tone pink. Some of the blooms have lots of the dark pink and some have more of the lighter pink.

Both blooms on your plant seem to be darker in the middle and lighter on the edge. One has more of a light edge than the other.

Thanks Nanna, who's that pretty 'girl' in the back of the photo at 1 O'clock?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh yes I love it when it does plants do this so cool :)) I feel what Bob said " probably genetic....light?....more food on one side?...."
And Jill said "some sort of genetic instability? "
Which can lead to Sports :: Now don't forget a Sport ; a leaf must be then put down from Mom and bloom the same and plant from that Mom and that Mom three Generations of stable blooming to re-name the Sprot but one parent must be named and it can not be a Noid..and then you also must check the Sport registration list to make sure this Sprot has not already been named.
Mosaique (D. Croteau) Semidouble medium blue star with pink fantasy. Medium green, plain, quilted foliage
bloomed true a couple times and last time had the fantasy blooms and three Chimera Blooms :)) So I am waiting on it to bloom again though I do have leaves down....to see what happens. My Morning Thunder has bloomed Chimeria one generation the Mom and first baby so far :))
My Arapohoe bloomer three or four times for months the biggest prettiest deep red blossoms. Then I got Chimera blooms. But now Araphoe has one sport registered in FC but mine did not sport like this one. I also saw a picture of another Sproted Arapohoe sported Chimera but not anything like mine.
It's a lot of fun ! My Rebel's Splater Kake just Sported to Rebel's night Breeze already registered. Both gorgeous but I have RB Night Breze babies by leaf so now I need a true RB Splater Kate . I bought mine from Violet Gallery but plants can Sport so easy. So much fun ! I like it when the Sport. But if you are going to show them they have to bloom true. Allison

Oh yes the healthy large leaves drooping down are normal . Only bad if soggy from root rot. The foliage just gets heavy and learge. You can put suport rings under neath of a paper plate. I was going to buy somee rings at my group store and a guy said don't waste my money don't worry about them people I think put them on their large plants about 8 weeks or so before a show..but they must remove them they are not allowed in a show. :))Plants all look good Laurie ,Jill and Nanna :))

Your 'Rhapsodie Rose' is lovely, Nanna!

In my case, I don't think it's the nature of the plant... I grew this one from a leaf (pot lost its tag, but upon first bloom I was pretty sure it's 'Purple Ruffles'), and none of my mom plants have done anything like this. The color difference between the two sets of blooms is pretty extreme.

I did get all excited when that one pinwheel bloom opened up, but the white pinwheel faded over several days as the flower aged... I was getting all kinds of ideas about trying to propagate a new chimera from that bloom stalk, LOL!

The lovely girl at 1 o'clock is Cambridge Missy. She is trimmed and expectly blooms.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Nanna, do you have leaves down of her? You know us 'girl' fanatics get to drooling on plants like that!! hee hee

And speaking of blooms, take a look at my Aeschynanthus (generic no id from Angel Exotics) I tried to kill it in October when I brought it home from Kentucky, but now it has settled into its new home and has surprised me with this.

Looks like it will be orange?

I'm hoping Jill is growing me Cambridge Missy :)) She's beautiful :))

Beg.

Your blooms are lovely. I have three leaves down of Cambridge Missy. They were very slow in earing, but are now peaking through. When the spring trade is completed, I will post a list of plants that I have.

I have tried to control the temperature in my av room but have aready lost some new plantlets. Because of space, I keep the mature plants under the lights and the leaves and plantlets receive light from the window. Sometimes gets a wee bit cold for them. Hopefully they will survive and be very stong for their efforts.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Nanna, any way to give them a little space heater to take the chill off? That's what I ended up having to do in for my new bedroom stand.
Our only real source of heat is our fireplace which is at the complete opposite end of an "L" shaped house. So the space heater brings the temp up to about mid 60's or a bit higher depending on the temp outside.

It helped. I don't leave it on at night because after so many years of sleeping in frigid temps with big down comforters, I no longer like the heat on at night. Not sure how they'll adjust to the fluctuation, but so far so good.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

LOL, I am growing enough 'Cambridge Missy' for *everyone*!! I have four double-leaf pots showing a zillion ears, plus I have a couple of suckers. Nanna & I may be able to sell some extra plantlets at that Mother's Day show/sale... I hope 'Cambridge Missy' will be a popular item! :-)

Nanna, if you can do it, I'd go for less light and more warmth for your plantlets by moving them back from the window some.

Silver Spring, MD

Thanks for the suggestions. You guys are great! I think more the the chill, is the fact that the turkey baster keeps getting water where it shouldn't be. Note that is the basters fault!!

I just purchased a SONY HC1 Digital with 12X Optical Zoom, 5.1 Megapixels, and the "anti-shake" feature, so I don't necessarily need a tripod. Got it for $349 after rebate from abesofmaine.com. I think that is the best price anywhere. www.abesofmaine.com appears to be one of the deepest discounters around, and they will dicker with you and go even lower sometimes on stuff.

Junglebob, you have a 32X optical zoom? Can you get detailed photos of the craters on the moon with it? My goodness! 32X! :+))

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I fount Lali's Av with two pretty different blooming blossoms !

Silver Spring, MD

As I looked at this plant it looked very familiar. Looks like Optimara Rhapsody Rosalie. My plant does the exact same thing but the dominate blooms are more pink with white edge. Looks like the second bloom just has a larger edge(howbeit very large).

Just guessing
