How do I get sidewalks in my neighborhood?

Woodstock, GA(Zone 7b)

Does anyone know or have experience with getting the county to put sidewalks on their street? Our road is about 3- 4 miles long. I love where I live but the streets are still somewhat rural and curvy and it is really dangerous to walk, although people do. We live in an area where you can only put one house on an acre and I am assuming that there are not alot of people who would want to chip in for something like this and I am sure it is expensive. Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated!

Don't sidewalks come from taxes? This might be too much of an expense for your little community to pay for. When they paved a country road near us, the people who lived on that road had to pay extra taxes for it. They were given the option of paying a lot all at once or little chunks over the years. My hubby's friend that lived on that road was about to move, so he chose little chunks. ; )

Sidewalks=higher taxes. Most of the subdivisions around here opted for no sidewalks when they were built, to keep down the taxes. Myself, I'd rather pay the extra tax just so that I wouldn't have to choose between dodging cars or walking on someone's lawn!

They will be putting in a sidewalk here next year (on the other side of the road from me) but we've been paying the higher tax rate for a few years anyways, because they re-zoned us and told us we are now "urban" rather than "rural." ?!

Several years ago, sidewalks were put in town...(I live outside town) They went from the court square all the way to the city limits...(and Wal-mart's parking lot) Wal-mart paid for just about all of it.

Around here, sidewalks are one of the "perks" that come with paying city taxes. Those outside the city limits don't have sidewalks (and we don't pay city taxes.)

I suspect sidewalks would be VERY expensive in many county areas, considering the lots are typically larger, and there's a lot more frontage to the road. I'll be curious to see if we get sidewalks when the city makes good on their threat to annex us (we're surrounded by the city now - it's just a matter of time before they finish the annexation.) My guess is the expense of sidewalks and street lights has slowed down their plans.

We don't have sidewalks but much of the year they do send out mowers who keep the weeds at least walkable. I usually walk facing traffic and am always alert to the cars and trucks racing by. It makes for a really hazardous walk so I have quit walking on the roads and either go to the park or just stay and walk around my quieter neighborhood.

There are sidewalks in my subdivision. The builders were required to install them with the houses along with street lights. I am sure the expense was part of the house purchase. We do pay city taxes, but this is a rare subdivision that doesn't have a homeowners' association or annual fee, which is how some subdivisions handle things like sidewalks.

I like the look of sidewalks, but ironically, people still walk on the road and children still play on the street. There are a few little kids who use my driveway since it slopes downward and makes a nice ramp for skates, skateboards, and those toddler riding devices. I don't mind, but I do wonder that parents aren't supervising the little ones.
