Satellite Pic of Your Home

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

This may have been posted before but I just found out about it.
You can see your neighborhood from satellites, down to the size of a big dog house.
Most pics are a year or 2 old but fascinating none the less.
I found my house, can you find yours?
http://local.live.com/ Just type in your street, city and state, then do the fine tuning, cool.

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing that.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

I found the street I live on, but there were no houses there. Am I doing something wrong or is it just my neighborhood? I'm sure my house is still here. LOL

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

me too. it comes down to the streets but I don't get an image. I get a faint image from google, but nothing as close as a dog house. :-)

Timberlea, NS(Zone 6a)

I just get a map, They don't have images of my area. : (

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

try this site, as well:
http://terraserver-usa.com/AdvFind.aspx

some of you may not be able to find you house if it has been built since the last date of mapping.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I had the same problem - this is my house in the google map, you can type your addy in to the search box and then click satellite in the upper right hand side of the map to get the birds eye view.

Thanks, Mitch. That one can't zoom in enough to see the house for me though.

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

Sorry, double post.

This is my house in the center. My neighbors 16 ft outboard is parked near my driveway.
The pic must have been taken in the fall of 2003, just before the street was re-paved.
This is not the same image I saw the first time, 2 days ago on this site. (My car was in the driveway in that one)
I was not sure how to make a link to this exact image so I snapped a pic.

Very COOL, Andy!!

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I got the first link to work!! over on the left side above the closer or farther buttons there is a Aerial view - you can click that and see your home.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Thanks for that info, Mitch.

This was as close-up as I could get to mine.

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

Yes, thanks Mitch. I could only go to 150 yds, couldn't zoom in like Andy could... but pretty cool, I can even make out our pond across the road from the house. MAN... we have a LOT of trees. :-)

Whoa hoo, I got the first one to work! : )

I couldn't get close enough to see the house, though.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Here is mine from the google map. I added a few squares to it for land on my wanted list. LOL

OK, the Google one was better. Here I am!:

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

I didn't mark off the house. I'll have to look at google and see if it's better, but I'm thinking it's not. :-(

I looked, google barely gives me a speck but it's in color. :-) in that photo above, you can make out the house on the right kinda... you can see the areas we have cleared really well... and all the area that we don't

This has turned out to be more fun than I expected.
Are these images old 'un-classified' files that Uncle Sam took?
Andy P

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

y'all tried GoogleEarth?

http://earth.google.com/

Here's where I work... The pushpin is on my car. lol The pic is about 1 year old, but still creepy.

Makes you wonder doesn't it Andy?

Some of them are fairly old, I looked up my son's school last night, and it's still the old site, doesn't have the new High school built yet, and it's 6 years old. Same with my daughter's school, it's still showing the old layout, though I kinda expected that since her HS is only a year old. :-)

I can't get close enough to tell with ours how long it's been, but, we had a bunch of land cleared to the left of the barn on the house side, and it doesn't look like it's showing up... and that was like 7 years ago we had that done.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Melissa, mine was the same way on Google.....barely a speck, but it was in color.

Andy, Big Brother is always watching. ;-)

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

My pic was easy to date because of the boat. Either late 2002 or 2003.
Yea, Big Brother.
Andy P

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

wow, that is cool, the way it zooms in. :-) But it's still the same picture Google has when you type your address in google. It's too far away for me to see anything. :-( I guess you guys that have really close up pictures must have something close to you that is worth taking closer satellite pictures of. :-)

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

let it zoom in on the Grand Canyon. It's cool, you can see the rapids in parts of the river!

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

And, Yes, Andy, this is fun, thank you for starting it! :-)

Tulsa, OK(Zone 7a)

I have found that the site with the highest resolution is by NASA.
http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov. Using this program you can find view site on earth.

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Had to jump in and try it myself. This map shows how close we live to each other and how populated this area is. Oh, and you can get an idea how small my gardens are, even though they are packed full. lol

Donna, all I got on your link was a map of the US.

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

wish i had been out side at pic. taking time
I would be 3 years younger
LOL

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

I figured out how I got a different image the second time I searched. I used another major street to get started and scanned my way in.
Tazzy, you made me think to look for myself in this second image because my car is home. I looked in my yard then I scanned the entire route I walk with Sarah. No luck, darn, that would have been cool.
Here is the other angle, looking in from the south. I've outlined my property line.

You know what really surprises me in the satellite pics? The number of swimming pools in my neighbourhood. I had no idea. You never know what folks have in their back yards! : )

I keep thinking what the heck is the point of having a swimming pool when you can only use it three months of the year? But, then again, now I know who to suck up to if we have a hot summer. ; )

My goodness, I'm a nosy neighbour! : o

Rhonda

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

I just 'visited' a possible new client. She gave me directions over the phone. I checked the satellite image and found the house. That should make it easy to find when I actually go.
Now I know what my neighbors have in their yard behind that privacy fence. LOL
I wonder if the city assessors ever use this to set property value (You never declared that new pool or shed... )
Andy P

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

... Andy P ... In a word: YEP !! Let your imagine fly a bit .. and, perhaps you will be able to 'assess' a whole 'nuther dimension associated. 'Big Bro' certainly implements and integrates all phases of technology! An extremely limited disclosure, of which, we have only a micro-inkling. Some may say, only random periodic scans, at best - but, folks should certainly reconsider lending much greater merit to the much larger picture that exists! Such, exceeds well beyond 'Dorothy, ToTo, & dreaming' ...

Hughesville, MO(Zone 5a)

I consider it an invasion of my privacy. Not that the government cares about that issue. I have had harsh words with the companies who fly over property and then come back with the photograph and want you to pay for it. They actually wanted me to believe that no one but the photographer knew the location of the property. If that was so, how did the sales person find us? Everyone from the pilot to the salesperson knew the location of our place. It shows thieves exactly how to find what on our place and the best escape routes.

Northport, ME(Zone 5b)

They don't do Maine. We aren't exactly a terrorist target. Or a target for much else. I'm supposed to feel sympathy for a neighbor who can't pay his taxes or other bills when he has a really nice bass boat on a trailer in his yard. I have a canoe.

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

I just figured another way to use this program.
Sometimes I wonder what part of a State a particular city/town is.
Rather than find a map and look up a cross reference, you can type in that town and state and widen the view way out to get a reference point.
It's very fast and totally visual, cool.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Good picture Andy. I haven't been on Terraserver for a long time. We have a local server called MAGIC. We can go urban and rural. Gets pretty close, but your picture is pretty clear.

Tazzy, wish i had thought of that!

I love to look down on my own house and yard.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/578690/

I have looked up my house but it still shows a site for cleared land. I wonder how often this satellite pics update? Anyone know?

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

google earth was so much fun! thanks for sharing it Andy, i spent countless nights flying through familiar neighborhoods!!! then my pc crashed and i had to remove it... when i get an upgrade, look out google earth!!!
