Interesting histories, I suspect all my forebears were either horsethieves or ne'er do wells, and we haven't been able to do much research on either side. We know my paternal GF and his brother emigrated from Italy in the late 1800s, and my maternal GPs both came from Sweden but all the family records are scattered or lost. We can just pretend they were royalty and nobody will know the difference.
Had a lovely lunch with my friend and her DH, and brought enough food home for dinner so no cooking tonight. We were planning to see KingKong this afternoon, but when we got to the theatre, they had a list of the Sold Out movies and that was one of them. Hmmmph. After all the popcorn I've bought from them.
dmcd, I checked out your pictures, holy cow have you got a job on your hands!! The good thing is that they didn't mess around too much with the interior, old houses have good bones, so once the plaster and lathe are stripped away and the debris removed, you have a clear vision of what it will be. And you will have all hardwood frames, etc. to work with, not the crummy soft pines in use in new construction.
Our oldest house was a stucco farmhouse built before 1890. The only interior changes were when they added a bathroom, and moved the kitchen entry door to the middle. When we were redoing the kitchen floor, we could see the original layout. The bathroom had some odd plastercast tiles with dutch theme designs on them, but many had been broken or scratched, and then painted over.
I think it would be fun to rehab a sturdy old house, that hasn't been all chopped up and ruined with updates. We looked at one in 1981 that was only lived in by two families and they hadn't touched a thing. Problem was interest rates were running 17% which put it way out of our reach. Now I've reached the age where even contemplating a rehab gives me a back ache.
Nice to see you drop in Babs, you've been so busy, and now Bob down with a bug as well. Be careful...you've been burning the candle at both ends.
'lo to everybody, I'm grabbing some chocolate and heading for the couch with a book in the other hand.
Coffee and... For Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005
NO dates, Casey, cornflakes and cocoa, they are very good and easy drop cookies
Hmmmm, maybe I'm related to the whole kit-n-kaboodle, too. LOL I was born in Sydney, mothers maiden name Fisher who married a Spencer from the States...who knows...maybe. (I wish I had what it takes to work up the geneology on my family...but there's not enough of it left to get the first steps going.
Let's see how much I remember...
Glad you all liked the opening quote in the first...I loved it!
Someone broke something...ah geez! It's ALL gone already.
Can I come back when I remember to bring the notepad? This is getting truly rediculous. I think I need to talk to the DR and see if this is really the first stages of Alzheimers...and I'm not kidding. :-(
Later,
~julie~
DInner time!!! I'm sipping a wine cooler- have six more to go - I want them all out of the house by the new year!!
DM - that house looks like work!!! When we were first married we moved into a centennial farm house that had been unlived in by humans for several years. There were several families of mice that were there however! We knocked down crumbling yucky plaster walls and put up new dry wall, sanded floors, put up wallpaper. It was gorgeous when we were done, but we only stayed there 3 yrs...what a lot of work for nothing.!! It only had a coal/wood furnace. I'm glad we left ---too much work for me!
Wall - I know nothing about my ancestors...just never was interested. I know I am Dutch, but other than that I"m clueless. I know I'll regret not learning about things.
m5- sorry you couldn't get in the movies....I want to see the Syriana movie. Have you seen 'Walk the line' yet? I like that one~ DIL buys her tickets online - then she is guaranteed a seat. You have to pay a small charge to do that tho.
DH just came in the house. I'm waiting for his "what's for dinner?"
Took my friend to return the memory stick for her camera and we ended up returning it and going to Wally world to get a different one. Thank goodness it works. She's the picky one. She did end up buying me lunch at Wendy's for all my trouble. We came home and played a new game using the tiles from the scrabble game and playing the card game golf. A fun afternoon...
Well, I need to open the door of the frig and whatever falls out - that's what we're having for dinner. !!
Maria is this the recipe?
1/3 cup pitted dates, chopped fine
1/2 cup boiling water (1/2 cup or so)
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tsp baking powder
3/4 cup shortening
1/4 cup white sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 cups corn flakes
Afghan Cookies
Method:
List of 6 items
1. In small cup, cover chopped dates with boiling water and let soak for 10-15minutes. Drain liquid and discard.
2. Combine flour, cocoa and baking powder and set aside.
3. In a large bowl, cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Stir in dates and beat in vanilla extract. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients.
Fold in corn flakes.
4. Break off pieces of dough (walnut sized). Roll into balls and place 1-1/2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet.
5. Bake 12-15 minutes or until firm. Cool on wire racks.
6. Serve with anything that would go nice with cookies.
I found it here.
http://www.daawat.com/recipes/contributions/afghancookies.htm
Maria I have been away many years, went back for 6 months in 1989, had kids I intended on finishing education so came back, oh well! never could stand the heat anyway. I am wondering if the Afghans has something to do with Afghanistan? I hope it is nothing political! Some have a warped sense of humour you know. Australia always had an interesting line-up of foods due to the diverse cultures there, which in the more recent history has included many naitons.
Suzie I didn't do most of it, other members took it upon themselves, so I am lucky, don't know if I would have done it myself.
meezeers, many Italians went to Australia too, it was a bad time for many trying to make a living, and they were the hardest working people, they had great respect in Australia for their determination. Many worked at anything and made a good life. You would be surprised how many people went from the Europen countries due to wars etc, and they were often deposed royalty, counts etc. the going joke in Australia is the 'convict' history, but there were very few of them, and those that were sent were only doing things like poaching a rabbit to feed their families, the unlucky ones were hung, anything more than stealing a handkerchief was a hangable offence.
sarv all you need to start with is parents, then grandparents, there should be records held somewhere, all Australias were held here at Somerset House, but that moved I believe.
julie you could very well be related to 'the' Spencers, Princess Di's sister married an Australian, lived on a sheep farm, her mother married an Argentinian, and it goes on, they were the people who have always made things happen, and a new country has always been a draw to the pioneering entrepreneurs. Slam them as anyone likes, but can anyone imagine what would happen if no-one bothered? We would all be like lumps of jelly!
Well, I have good news about my greenhouse!!!!
I took the receipt, pictures from my dig. cam., and the instruction sheet into Fred Meyers and explained it all.
They told me bring back the whole shabang and they would replace it with a brand new one!!!
So now I get to set it up again when the weather gets better!!!
I will use some water-filled plastic milk jugs to hold it down too this time. So hopefully it won't go anywhere this time.
So I am much happier now!
Julie, I didn't get to list my goodies.
reading most anything I can get my hands
gardening-my biggest thrill in life right now
dahlia flowers, of course
cats
bike riding
eating
cooking, or shall I say baking
watching my kids do sports events
visiting with family
computer
DG, of course
digital camera pictures & playing around with the pics on the computer
shopping if and when I have money
Mary, my choice for your puddy cat's name is Shadow. She reminds me of a shadow with the black and white. You talked about the rain over here on this side of the mts, yes, it has been very wet and is flooding in places in the fields around here. If you are ever over this side of the mts again, we must meet!
M5, you know, you looked just like I thought you would with that pic of that silly hat. A sweet nice lady.
Well, am at work so must go. Just wanted to shout my good news again, hehe
Carol (DR)(the even one)
Wallaby, I learned in school about "Convict Australia" and that this is not true, these poor soules are just as you said ,some were sent to this country too who did not really commit a terrible crime some where just suspect of a crime.
Elaine, NO this is not the recipe here it is:
200 grams butter(about two unsalted sticks)
2 cups of sugar
1 1/4 flour
1/4 cup cocoa
beat butter with sugar till fluffy
stir in cocoa
fold in 2 cups of cornflakes
drop teaspoon of mixture on cookie sheet, bake at 350' 15 minutes
frost with chocolate frosting if you like
And a shot of Pepper girl on her blankets and bed. It is not cold right now, but she still snuggles a little bit. I will try to get a shot of her next time when she is wearing her sweatshirt. LOL I still find it hard to believe she is supposed to be so sick.
Gonna have pizza tonight. It is our usual Wednesday night fare. Homemade, yummy, sausage, canadian bacon, peppers, onions and fresh mushrooms.
Susan
=^..^=
I like to watch this thread when I am wondering about. It is interesting. But I am not going to join the group. I am pure male (a old one) but still of that lower breed and I got a notion a male could really get in deep cyber trouble in here. Anyway the history thing was very nice. always interest me.
MESSERSFIVE: WOW horsethieves You sound like family. Wonder if your not a long lost cousin are something. Mine is short. German immigants in the 1800s. Got more interesting during phobition when my aunt ran a speak easy and my father was a 13 yr old bootlegger. Thats about it. My wife's is different sort of. Her uncles rode with Quantrell during the civil war and broke bread with the likes of the James and Dalton brothers. The homestead was a old farm house that had been built around original log home. Before the civil they added on to it and put a second floor on it. At that time studs for the walls and the siding were all pure oak. During the civil war there was a minor battle there in town(probably chasing the brothers) and up into the 60's you could still find mini balls with a metal detector in the yard. They had a open spot in the attic above the kitchen that when you looked in it looked like the framing for the cieling below. But it was really a double floor. If you did not look very very close you would miss how the wood layed in there. the uncles used to hide beween in the false cieling when they were being looked for. According to the stories they were in trouble with both sides North and South. You REAL SURE your ancestors did not hail out of missouri messerefive.
Nope, pretty sure they settled in northern Wisconsin and upper Michigan. GF had two speakeasies during prohibition, according to family lore. The brother who moved to Laona, midstate, raised a family and one of my second cousins is an Orthopedic Surgeon, his brother was the President of Marquette University for about 5 years, and has gone off to Africa to start a business school last I heard. They are the only respectable ones I can dredge up...the rest of us are just folks.
9kittymom, I hope Pepper is feeling much better soon. Those vet bills are killers aren't they? Mini is still attached to me like a leech, that new kitten better get over here soon and distract her.
When we were in Australia a few years back we were amazed at the diversity of the culture, and the restaurants representing every kind of cuisine you can imagine, and all of it delicious. From Maylasian to Italian to Chinese, we tried it all.
Isn't the British Royal Family descended from the Germans? I thought I learned that sometime back in the dinosaur era when I was in school.
I better get in the scullery, before the smoke alarm goes off.....
Checking back after another afternoon at "This Old House" haha
Babs~What a gift you are to your neighbor! I am sorry for our neighbors' suffering. They are truly blessed to have you.
MaryE~ Accidentally snorted when i read your take on my "new" fireplace. I could board it up again! It's making sense now!! I did want to see what was in there though! the only way to do this is to leave and get cleaned up at the end of the day, it's way to gross to live in! Keep us updated on the kitty's name. I just adore her little face!!
Janis~I hope you have some help with the kids. How can you stay immobile when you have 4 kids???
wallaby~fascinating history, you are so lucky to be able to trace it! I was going to agree with meezer, my long lost cousin (LOL) about the forebears being horse thieves, but mine are Irish and pretty much lost to history!
DR (carol even) ~ HOORAY about the greenhouse!! So nice to hear good news....you do have to assemble the whole thing again though?
sarv~ I'll give you a hand with the wine coolers if you pass a couple this way!!
9kittymom~ wow beautiful sunset! and very pretty pups. Good luck with Pepper, she is so sweet!
SuzieQ ~very handsome grandson there!! Shoul've come to your house for dinner!
meezer and ozarkian~ My horsethief relatives visited plenty of speakeasies but i don't believe they owned any, and were most NYC Philadelphia area. You have the high class horse thief relatives!! Lucky!
And yes meezer, I have my work cut out on the farmhouse. It would likely have been bulldozed if i hadn't bought it. It will be my last project I'm sure. I'm 47, I figure I maybe can get it done before I shut down!! I just have to try. What's the worst that can happen (uh, don't answer that!!)
I never knew my grandparents, dad was orphaned, and my parents died young. So I think I've always been looking for a history to "adopt". I hoard everyone else's castoff grandma items, in fact when i was in college my friends would give me "grandma stuff" for gifts! (like thrift store Limoges odds and ends and sewing boxes). I have framed photos of other people's relatives in my dining room in those old ornate frames. I named one young lady Aunt Edna, and decided that she gave me the beautiful Mission dining room set that in fact I bought at a garage sale! So this house will be a compilation of all my weird fantasies, and by the time it's done it really WILL be my history!!
Exciting stuff ozarkian, I bet you grew up with some stories told.
The Royal families of Europe have a long tradition of marrying into each others families to 'keep it all in the family' so as to spek, the notion that princess Di was a commoner is one dreamt up by publicists I think, for hundreds of years they have carefully chosen their heirs to their thrones. The Spencers were at one time a contender for the throne, did you hear her brother's speech at the funeral? One of power and warning rather than compassion, just like the'good old days'.
Queen Victoria married prince Albert, a German, and a daughter of hers married into the Russian Imperial family. Prince Phillip (Queenies hubby), is Greek but his mother was from an Austrian I think royalty connection. No such thing as marrying a commoner, and did you know Camilla, his new bit of fluff, her great great grandmother was daughter to his great great grandfather, King Edward V1 as follows from the 'unofficial royal wewbsite'
Though Bertie had many other mistresses in his lifetime, his final mistress is the most famous of all not only because she is rumored to be the only one that Queen Alexandra tolerated, but because her daughter, Sonia, is reported to be Edward VII’s daughter and Sonia is the great-grandmother of the mistress of the current Prince of Wales, Camilla Shand Parker-Bowles. Alice was born in Scotland to a titled family who was not wealthy. She married Colonel George Keppel in 1891 and gave birth to her first daughter, Violet, in 1894. Violet was to become more famous as the lover of writer Vita Sackville-West than for her own writing. Alice became Bertie’s mistress in 1898 and gave birth to her daughter, Sonia, in 1900. Alice was unique among mistresses as she was viewed as a loyal to the king and with no agenda – not even a hidden one! It is said that she and her husband viewed her affair with the king as their duty to the crown and he was actually quite proud of the fact. Alice is also remembered for being good-natured with a deep, husky voice that the king found both soothing and seductive (like Camilla’s?). Though she was Bertie’s mistress for the final 12 years of his life, she supposedly did not influence any of his decisions, nor did she affect the fashion of the time. She spent her final years after 1910, the year of the king’s death, with her husband who died two weeks after she did in 1947.
Now that's really lost me!
dmc what a way to go!
the best relatives are those you can control, saves all that heartache! good for you
Kittymom beautiful sunset. Is that from the fires there or is that a common sight?
Maria, the recipe Elaine has is the one that my friend uses, or really close. I called her and she said that both are afghan cookies. Kind of like we have so many variations on rice krispy treats. I think I will give yours a try, I am still not into the dates.
DR, that is wonderful about the greenhouse replacement. With the wind here we use tent spikes on angles to hold alot of things into the ground instead water bottles and such.
Suzie, I used a recipe program I had to store all my recipes, then put them all on a disc. At the time I was using a Mac so the disk was usless to me and I could never find enough time to switch them all over once I got a windows computer. Then when we moved here the only disks to fall out of the box and break on the freeway were my recipe disks. Thousands of hours gone. I now have a binder that I print out a hard copy of my favorites with any changes I have made and where the original came from and then save a copy on a disk in word. Hopefully this will prevent loosing them again.
ozark, I am sure that the other men would welcome you warmly and keep you as safe as they can if you wish to join us once in a while. We are a harmless group.
Sarv, you really need to pass a wine cooler over here, I am a lush of late and will help you out with ridding your house of those before midnight. LOL DH just read that and laughed. Thinks he will get lucky I guess. Ha Ha NOT
Well, everyone cross your fingers. My lawyers, realtor, and loan officer are suppose to be meeting at 2:00 pm in South Carolina to sign the final papers on the house and property. If all the papers that they needed are not in, signed and approved we are either going to have to walk away from the property or start all over again. I am not sure how most people deal with purchasing things from out of state but this has been one of the most stressful events I have ever had to deal with.
I havent been able to get polska kielbasa out of my mind so we are having that and fried tators for dinner. I think someone here said it early and I now have to have it. LOL
Casey
It did look the sky was on fire didn't it? Nope, just a beautiful sunset.
It is burning up south of us though. We have never seen anything like it. This is so strange. Burn bans all over.
DR, that is fantastic that they will replace your greenhouse. Makes you want to continue to do business with them, doesn't it?
Oz, you are just as safe here as you are in hostas, maybe more so. ROFLOL
I love family history. I really don't much about mine. That is kinda sad.
Pizza was very good. Now we will probably have banana bread with cool whip for a snack later. It will be good when all this snack stuff is gone. Better make one of my banana pies so we won't run out of goodies. LOL
Thanks for the good wishes for the Pepper girl. She is my sweetheart, the most loving dog I have ever had. shhhh don't tell Wile E and Piper, they are loving too.
Susan
=^..^=
CARAT our fingers and toes are crossed!
Maria, we did have something similar, the Australian Women's Weekly used to have recipe pull-outs in the middle, a booklet, there was some great stuff.
The cornflakes with cocoa is popular now, but we did hone jays with them, much nicer, I still have the recipe. It is melted sugar, butter, honey with corn flakes mixed in, placed in paper cases and put in a warm ove just long enough to help it stick properly together.
The rice crispies (rice crackles) was a mixture with vegetable fat, cocoa. sugar, coconut, and rice crispies, again the same as above. I also used to make rocky road, a biscuit base with a mix of marshmallow, melted chocolate, cherries and walnuts on top, and I made my own marshmallow, my kids always had the best of goodies for parties, others always had bought stuff, and here that is not very good.
Casey, am keeping my fingers crossed for you. It's bad enough buying property in your own home state. Can't imagine what you've been going through.
Maria, your recipe looks simple enough that even I might could do it. LOL Thanks for posting.
Carol, so glad to hear you'll be getting a new greenhouse. That sure was nice of the company
ozarkian, am sure the guys would enjoy another male point of view. They probably get tired of being out numbered. :)
Suzie, I have my recipes in word. Have set up a folder called cookbook and have folders in it. Have everything divided up just like a cookbook with soup/stews, poultry, etc. Hope yours turns out. Have a back up copy of my hard drive.
Ooops, the DH is calling. will check later. Hi to those I've missed.
... elaine
Ozarkien, wade right in. The ladies might want to talk "girl Talk" on occasion, but its always discrete. Interesting about bootleggers and such. Seems there are always public spirited people willing to serve the public needs whenever the government goes off on another of its foolishments. So many posts. 'Even Carol' glad Freddie's is replacing your GH. nite all
I'm baaaaaack,

So, Elaine,,,you didn't miss my post,,,I Didn't 'cause I wasn't able to. GGGGRRRRRR

Hello to everyone else,,,
I skimmed through both threads but it's just been too busy around the table to try to catch up.
Whoever is lurking,,,,stick around,,,,the more the merrier.
Well, off to check my other threads.
Nitey Nite,
Kelly
whew!!! way to much to catch up on but thinkin gof you all!!!!!
Hugs to all of you !!!
Anne
Elaine--- Good to be back --so busy and miss all here!!!!!!
Happy scanning
GG so glad to see you are plugged in again. Missed you. Opps, Anne snuck in there too. I was wondering about you. How are you???
Bal, I saw the wonderful pics of the furbabies. I could never own one of those, I wouldn't get a thing done around here, their eyes are so mesmerizing.
Kittymom, I wonder if the smoke blowing in the higher levels in the air are causing the beautiful deep color in that sunset. When ever California is having a serious fire during the summer (common thing) we get some of the most beautiful sunsets and sunrises here.
Okay, since the wine coolers just weren't working any magic I decided on a glass or two of my own wine, now to the jacuzzi for a soak and then nighty night.
I will be working again tomorrow so I will be on all day again. LOL
Hey have I told you all how much I really love ya??? Well l do.... Thanks
Casey

DRAT IT. DANG IT. GRRR, I am going to cry. Posted, typed for the last 10 minutes, and poof, into cyber space it went. I HATE THAT.. I do want you all to know that I addressed EVERONE, EVERY SITUATION, and so interested in all that had gone on today. BAAA, SOB, SOB, pass the Puffs, great tears are coursing down my cheeks. You probably think that I have abandoned you, and I really worked hard at letting you know that I care about what goes on, and it is all GONE. WAAH, gonna throw the biggest temper tantrum I can.
Was on a shopping trip with DGD today, and collapsed when I got home about 3. Had to take a nap, in order to make dinner. She is going home tomorrow, and I PROMISE, I WILL BE IN FRONT OF THIS COMPUTER, until somebody pries my fingers off the keyboard.
Welcome to Wallaby, Ozarkian, always room for more.
Julie, I did want to thank you for your compliment last night. I do think that I am an easy going person, or try to be. And your very inspirational message to start off the thread was something that I very much appreciated. BTW, are you an Aries, we seem to have much in common?
To everybody else, please know that I love all of you. You have meant the world to me since I joined. Always know that I have ears to listen and shoulders to cry on, and hands to pat me on the back, and arms to reach down into the pit to help me out, feet to run to my rescue. Thanks bunches.
Well have to be up early to take DGD home, so will sign off, and try to sleep well. BTW, my back is much better, thanks to all who have said prayers for me, and sent good healing thoughts.
Good night all.
{{{{{{{{{{{Defoe}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Been there, its frustrating. We all know that you care.....I feel the same way. I try to explain to DH and he just says beware.
He doesn't understand, oh well his loss.
Casey
dcat,
Aw, here's a Puffs,,,,been there too and Hate that! Hope DGD didn't tucker you out too much,,,but, from the sounds of it, if you needed a nap, prolly she did.
I take it you are an Aries? I am also.
Glad to hear your back is better,,,,hope you sleep well.
Kelly
Just popped in to say fingers x'd for Casey. It may be rough doing things inter state but just imagine what it was like inter national when we moved from the UK to the USA!! Nightmares even thinking about it!!!
Carol
the odd one
Oh, Yes,,,,Casey,,,,Good Luck,,,will be thinking of you and saying a prayer.
Kelly
Thanks for the smile there D.Cat...LOL...nope...I'm not the Aries in this house, my DH *is*. I'm the Leo...does that tell you anything? hehehe (Yep! we get along. Funny, my DH thinks *he's* easy going too. Still grining here...too funny.)
Thank you to everyone who trys so hard to cover the comments. Even if you only catch a couple you're doing better than I am.
This is one of the longest and most interesting single threads we've had for a long time...thanks, in part to our "new" visitors. Welcome Wallaby and Ozark and I think I've missed someone else too...I'm sorry. I really hope you guys will stick around...especially hope we don't drive our new *GUY* away...Ernie and Robert will happy you're here.
Tomorrow's DAILY is UP in the Parking Lot.
