Photo Contest - Suggestions

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

Hopefully I won't be too unpopular when I make this suggestion - how about the judges scan through all entries, and then limit the entries to 10 or less for the population to vote on? I started to vote but there were so many photos and they took long to load (and I've got cable) that I abandoned the voting.

Maybe a possible suggestion for next years contest?

I would think this would be a great idea, the bulk of the members dont have a ton of time to go through 100s of photos for every type! It would be better and give a fair vote for people and would clear out a lot of the clear misguided and or bad photos.

Sue,
I gave up too- whew!

I gave up too after only voting on a few catagories......too many other things to do this time of year. ;-)

Some of the categories had so many pictures that I didn't do them justice, I'm sure. I spent a long time doing the little that I did. It just seemed like way too many pictures this year. Maybe there should be a limit on the number of pictures one person can enter. I don't know what the answer is, but I felt overwhelmed and lost interest myself.

That is an extremely good idea!! Next year we will DEFINITELY do it this way.

We'll have a two-stage voting area. The first stage is where you will only vote for the picture to advance to stage two. That will clear out quite a few. Each user will only be able to vote for, say, 10% of the pictures in each category to proceed to the next stage.

Then the second stage will be the actual vote. I love it and that's what we'll do.

I had no problem, it possibly depends on your computer as well as the connection and internet provider. I am only on ordinary dial-up, but have a fast computer and AOL. I don't think i had to wait longer than 10 seconds for a pic to enlarge. it took a little while to load in a new complete section, but no longer than 5 minutes on the longest.

I also chose only to enlarge the pics that caught my immediate attention.

Good idea though about the 2 stage process, a bit like an X factor comp, going through to new rounds. Not too sure about DG admin. doing the initial selection, that wouldn't be a proper competition, but down to personal preference.

How about a good month or so prior to the opening of next year's comp. to get ideas and votes on ideas, by popular majority? The people doing the voting always see loopholes that could be improved on.

I hope I have got that right, by the mention of 'judges' being DG admin., and the 'population' DG members.

No. The judges will always be the population.

I tend to agree with you, about each of our pooters and the applicable capabilities.

I think that it's very possible, that much may could very well be associated to the amount of memory on board. I'd tried to access the photo entries to 'view' on several other family members' PCs (older and/or with 256 MB memory) in the last week or so .. and (their use) sure alters and LIMITS the 'viewing' capabilities, remarkably so !!!

I didn't mind the number of entries to go through, although I did only choose the thumbnails that interested me to enlarge. But I think a bit of 'judicious pruning' before the actual voting to 'weed out' some of the entries is a good idea.

I think the judging has been open long enough for people to get all their voting done, I did mine in the first couple of days but hey, maybe I need a life!

I can't wait to see the results as there were so many good entries!
