A Gardener's Smiling Wife

Brookline, MA(Zone 6a)

Hello to all! My husband, "escubed" loves this web site, and I love him. So here I am, following in his footsteps.

It's a remarriage for both of us, and he's brought out the sleeping garden lover in me. I've always done well with house plants, but never had the confidence to try to make the earth bloom. Actually, for years I did get mostly grown potted annuals from Home Depot, dug holes, planted them and felt like a woman of the earth. The flowers did well and I enjoyed the blooms and colors.

Now everything is different! I've learned the joy of dreaming over seed catalogs when there's snow outside in this suburb of Boston. We just painted our bedroom "Window Garden" green and it's delightful, happy, and makes the darker days more bearable. Also, my husband has turned the family room with the skylight and a lot of windows into a winter habitat for his climbing passion fruit vines. Their large leaves and constant toward the ceiling make the whole space "hopeful" rather than "dug in" for the winter.

Steve loves to be a farmer and I love to watch him. This spring, now that I've gained some confidence, I look forward to working beside him, and also on my own, in our garden. Meanwhile, the freezer is filled with delicious non-supermarket tomatoes that we harvested from his Earth Boxes. If no one has used Earth Boxes, I can't recommend them strongly enough...we had literally mountains of the best tomatoes, as well as cucumbers. In the spring we're getting more Earth Boxes for more tomatoes and cucumbers, plus eggplant, butternut squash, spinach, and whatever else we/I can think of. The only conflict we have is that I want to plant "everything!" in the front yard where everyone can see them. We also have an incredible herb garden, plus a fern area in the shade, and a butterfly garden area in the sun. There's also many old established flowering bushes that he liberated from overgrown vines, and they're gorgeous and getting better with more sun and air. A rock-like path through the yard is planned for the spring, as well as birdhouses and water features more ambitious than our bird bathes.

Welcome Lila!
I like the sound of a pathway because they're so inviting. I'm hopeful that we'll get one in our yard too!
Now if I could just get my DH to follow me here and see what all the fuss is about I'd be thrilled. Actually, if I could get him to sow just one seed (in the garden that is) then I'd be making progress, lol.

Cheers,
