this is a pic of my dome over the seeds that Karokee sent me. I am so proud just to have some brug seeds. every one will be named after karokee Thanks John
brugs seeds
Hi John,
Didn't see a pic. Maybe you can post again. Also, I sure haven't forgotten about you with cuttings. I'm just being selfish, in that our weather has held and with all my blooms, I've been waiting to cut. I know it's selfish, but bear with me. Will you be around Christmas? The reason I ask is that I will definitely have to mail them by Monday or Tuesday since I'm going out of town for Christmas. Let me know.
Barbara
this is my third try to post. Barbara I am sorry about the pic but every time I try to post it shows this page has expired. I have reduced the size and the quality down to the same as my other posts but to no avail. Yes Barbara I will be here over Christmas. John
Glad you have them planted, I sent you a DG email
Very good John. Can't wait to see those little green heads popping up.. then progressing to their own little pots and getting taller.. then by summer setting buds and blooming. It's a circle of life that has never failed to intrigue me. Best of luck with your seeds.
Barb
Are you sure you aren't cooking them??? Is that light directly on the plastic dome? Do you have a therometer under the dome???
Judy
Judy, it is a plant grow light, I cant feel any heat at all from it, and I was told to place as close as possible. If I am wrong please help, I sure want them to sprout thanks John
I stand corrected, there is a slight bit of heat if put my hand between light and dome but just warm. John
I was told by the gardeners in my area that I should not use lights or mats, but I did buy lights and they exploded. Those gardeners, all self taught master gardeners, told me to use a southern exposure window and I did, worked like a charm, made me look like I knew what I was doing. I can verify that a good window with southern exposure is great. I'd love to see what the light is like in Kellyville OK, all the zones lower than mine, especially the magical zone 5a and zone CA, lol!!
maybe thats why I havent seen any green yet. I do have a south window in the masterbath. Now if I can talk my DW into letting me move them. I planted the seeds on the pm of the 14th, am I asking too much?
Its been 4 days and I check them about every 2 hours.HEHE
OMG you sound just like ME .....I would/will run several times a day to see if I had/have any sprouts :-))
I have some I planted on the 8th Nov and some of them sprouted 3-4 days later some others took they time and yet some others have not sprouted yet.
This is so exiting to see them grow. It's better than opening up presents on christmas :-))
Have fun !!!
Brigitte
I germinate my seeds very close under 1 cool fluorescent and 1 warm fluorescent. They do great usually. John, the can take a while. The fresher the seeds are the quicker they germinate. I peel all my seeds but do not soak them. Real fresh ones that are still white when you peel them, can germinate in a few days, but older ones I find here can take a month or so.
Here are some of mine, they have already germinated but you can see how close theiy are to the lights.
GOOD LUCK!!
Kell, I did soak the seeds, and tryed to take the cover off but I only have one hand that is fully functional, and those little seeds were tremendously slick. I only have the one tube grow lite, but I have it only inches from the dome. Im just hopeing for the best. John
kell,
that's not one of the cups you keep on mentioning,is it ?
looks like a larger container ? great idea with the bags, mine are still in those plastic shoeboxes with saranwrap over them.Did have to put some little stakes in though to make a higher tent.
John, a lot of people do not peel their seeds and they do soak them. I bet yours will do great. You just have to be patient. I am waiting on special seeds myself and it is making me nuts. LOL. Try not to open the container for each time you add pathogens in it. Did you leave th eseed son top of th eplanting medium but slightly pressed in? They like light on them. Though before I knew that I used to bury them and some germinated then too. Just not as many. .
Here is another picture I found, these are out of bag and you can see how close I keep the seedlings so they do not get leggy. Short and fat is how I like them. LOL
Thanks Kell, yes I just pressed them into the soil. I guess I am acting like an expectant dad. But its fun so far. But I am inpatient. John
Hi Brigitte!!
No, I use the those little tupperware like containers you can buy at the grocery store for my seed starting. I get them in a few sizes so I can put all 1 kind of seeds in 1 container. The one you see is probalby 4 inches square and 2 inches deep.
The red cups I just love because they are like 4 inch pots but deeper. Brugs put down a long tap root. Plus they are so inexpensive I just toss them and do not have the hassle of bleaching them.
I have no seedlings in the 16 ounce red cups now for a pic to show you them but I do have lots of cuttings in them and some of my new love, variegated clivia. Here is my best variegated clivia. I am in love.
KELL!!!! Where did you get the varigated Clivia?? Would love to have some. Jeanette
KELL, you've got to STOP IT. Now where did you get the varigated Clivia? I've been resisting but I would love to have some of those.
Kell
I agree- I probably can't even grow clivia here but I want one after seeing your photo- where 'ja get this one?
John, thanks for asking your questions- I'm storing all this information up for when I get to try my hand at growing seeds.
So, Kelly or anyone, I have another question- when do you take off the bag- do you have to do a hardening off process for the seedlings?
I have another question- do you sterilize you growing medium? You mentioned pathogens and limiting the times you open your containers, to reduce the chance of 'infection'. If so, how?
Brenda

Aren't they the best?? I love them too much. I resisted for a long time. But I have a good friend who has lots of them and he kept showing me his. Then I broke. And got broke also. LOL. Good ones are very expensive sadly! They make double pink brugs look cheap in comparison. Of course I have no really good ones yet. LOL
They would be such fun to hybridze but unlike brugs which are so fast and easy, clivia are much harder and it also takes about 5 years to flower. That is a long time. You should see the colors they are working on not only in the leaves but also the flowers. ADDICTING big time. They also are so much smaller than brugs and way less messy. And I do not think they get mites!!! Or at least mine haven't. In fact nothing has bothered mine ever. NO BUGS!!! WOW. I just fell in love all over again! There are some specialty nurseries and they sell some on ebay!
Hi Brenda! No, I just take the bag off. The seedlings stay in the same place underlights, so the only thing that has changed is the humidity and of course they go into dirt right away after I take them out of the bag. I never have sterilized my soil though some here do. I am more of a no muss and fuss gal. I use rockwool not dirt to germinate also. I never open my bags until I am ready to plant the seedlings. Sometimes, not all the seeds have germinated and then I put those back into the bag. But I am careful to wash my hands well and get them back in fast.
Here are some coming up in rockwool.
I've been reading about clivia, isn't it a house plant that flowers in the winter?? Kell, does the variegated resemble lariope (sp)?? I can tell that the leaves are thicker with more body. What are ideal growing condition for clivia?? The seedlings are precious!!! I'm a fool for babies!!
Hi Sherry. Here they are outdoor plants. Though I have these indoors to get them well rooted. I won't put them out till spring when I hope they have rooted in and will do well. I have clumps of all green ones that I have had outside for 30 years. I need to go look at lariope to see. Off hand I would say no. I have no clue what is the ideal conditons for them. I plant them and forget them. LOL. Though these variegated were expensive so I bet I take a bit more care with these. LOL. My plan is to use them under other plants but at the outside of my border so they are easily seen and enjoyed.
In case I confused anyone, those seedlings above are of brugs not clivia. I am trying to germinate my first clivia seeds now but so far no sprouting. A good friend sent me the seeds as a gift so I am so hoping I am successful with them.
Hey, Kelly
Aren't they cute. So that's what they look like! And there are plenty more to germinate, too. I can see where you peeled them. Can you just score them? Do you let them get 2-3-4 leaves before you remove bag and pot up?
I know there must be books out there for this information but stuff gets left out and there's nothing like everyone's first-hand experience.
Hope you're having good weather out there on the left coast!
Brenda
Im sorry, but this plant would be beyond my patience
john, you'll just really love brugs then =). they grow FAST.
John, they are not low maintenance, but one look, one smell and you're hooked. Once they germinate, they really grow fast, or of course you can start with cuttings.
Kell, the clivia seeds I find are very expensive. Do variegated seeds grow variegated plants? Are you starting them in rockwool? and how long have they been going?
Hi Brenda. Actually we are in the midst of a terrible storm. Oh well!
Lots of people do not peel them, I always do. I actually enjoy doing it as I watch TV. A mindless activity! I bet you could score them though I never have. I let the seedlings get a couple of inches tall before I pull them out of bag and put into soil. I love it when they are in the bag for I do not have to worry about them at all. No watering! So sometimes I leave them in for a while longer than needed.
LOL John, wait till your brugs are covered in mites. Talk about having patience. LOL. I am not as hot for the green clivia, but the variegated are so pretty they do not need to flower.
Linda, the good seed are SOOOO EXPENSIVE!!! LOL. I had my eye on some that were $10 a seed with no guarantees they would be variegated or even germinate. I see some go for even more than that. I am an ignorant novice but as I understand it, there are no guarantees at all. Also if seed pod is all white, the seedlings from it probably will be albino and die. So you really need to know what is going on.
Have you seen the short fat seed stalks that are so variegated right up into the seed pods? What a sight. LOL
From lilywangxuan pictures. How cool is this?
Wow, Kell
That's awesome! Looks like a kid's toy or something! Unreal. Amazing Mother Nature's variety and imagination.
Don't blow away out there!
kell,
Your var.clivia is wonderful and the pod you showed is unbelievable LOL....
I have had a couple of clivias for a few years. One had a pod with just ONE seed in it and just a few days ago I put it into a brown little bag, tagged it to put away.I had let it dry a few days.
NOW I am wondering should I have planted it right away ?
The other smaller clivia is also a baby from the mother.Do you guys put yours into a dark closet for the winter with minimal/no water for a resting period ?
Kell ,OPPS forgot to tell you thanks for the container info.
NOW I have got to tear myself away from DG and start decorating my tree.TTYL
My word that looks like variegated celery with miniature melons growing out the top, that is so unusual and fun, sorta like a maraca without sound...
I think Kell likes to tantalize us.
Kell has such a huge plant appetite. I am nuts you all know. I am so fascinated by plants.
Gee Brigitte, I have never heard of doing that with clivia. Are you thinking of amaryllis? They kind of look the similar. I know very little about clivia. I have had some in my backyard that have grown there with no care for 30 years. I rarely even water them and never water them on purpose. They are so easy in my zone. I understand the seeds do best when they are real fresh!
I found a new variegated plant I am just dying for. It is found only in 1 nursery in England though. I am so stymied. Hey Santa..........
Take a gander at this ginger. Be still my variegated heart.

No Kell..it is a clivia...I was told it suppose to rest during the winter, the in spring I repot it ,water, fertilize it and then I get blooms IF I am a good clivia mom.
