This leaf of 'Cloud Puff' is putting up ears! It's a sweet mini with medium green girl foliage and white blooms.
Basement babies
Jill your pictures are great ! Silly Girl with her babies :)) Can you grow me one too please !
'Buckeye Boysenberry'.so cute great variegation !
'Cloud Puff' babies !, I love Kermit with Irsh Flirt :))
The photo that says Smitten Kitten ? I see the powdery mildew ? is it ? I've never seen that before ? Is it powdery ?
Did you say that is Smitten Kitten leaf ? Smitten kitten is a variegated girl foliage Miniature , so I was wondering if I am looking at the correct picture ?
Your pictures are wonderful ! I really enjoy them. Great growing, Allison
PS Jill I'd love Grape Slush if you have extras. I had leaves and they did not root for me :((.
Quetion on Rob's Gundaroo picture the green stuff in pot ? What is that and what's it from, something you put in your soil-less mixture ?
Great old tub ! Allison
You're the best, Jill. Loved the tour.
Nanna
Oh my god ladies..they are all SO GORGEOUS!
Now I can officially NOT wait until spring :)
Can't wait to see the goodies I get!
Wow Critter...your plantlets and leaves look great. I'm impressed that you have babies so soon from your leaves. You are a good mommy :)
Deb
Nanna, all your babies look so gorgeous! They're big, too! They just love you!!!
Deb, those larger plantlets are from leaves that went down in May! Propagation is generally pretty slow for me.... we'll see if the lights etc speed things up. But I'm sure I'll have some nice plantlets to share around this spring!
The "green stuff" in some of the pots is just algae growing on the surface of the soil... I get that sometimes. It never seems to do any harm to my garden seedlings, and the AVs don't seem to mind it either. It's probably a sign that my soil mix is a little on the wet side (which could be a factor with the powdery mildew), and it'll go away when the soil dries out in those pots. And yes, powdery mildew is powdery like talcum powder..... it'lll even blow right off the leaves with a good puff... I was going at it like the big bad wolf last night, LOL!
Allison, I'll make a note of which ones you'd like and do my best to have them for you this spring. I can see I'll have to put down more leaves of 'Grape Slush' and the 'Buckeye' ones! I figure that any leaves that go down now might still make reasonable little plantlets by April/May. I *think* there are 2 more plantlets of 'Silly Girl' in that pot, so I'll have 3 (for you, begonia, and Lorry) to go around, and I've got another leaf started...
And yes, that's 'Smitten Kitten' according to The Violet Gallery.... the leaves don't look very "girl" to me either, but then I've seen other foliage that I think looks "girl" when that isn't part of the description.... But it's definitely variegated.
It was fun taking & posting those pictures! Thanks for the comments & compliments!
Great pics CritterO & Nana!
All those babies look wonderful.
MsC
MsC & others.... be sure to LMK which ones you'd particularly like "dibs" on!
MsC, I'm trying hard to rescue my Twinkle Blue, but I think that one might end up back on my wish list rather than on my "have" list. :-(
Jll I'd Like to trade you all Mini's, Semi-minis, trailers, vintage that you can spare, and girl leaf too :))
Allison
Jill, our leaf-tastes are so similar, it's nutty. That is a healthy Zantedeschia in the last picture. What culitvar is it and did it grow where it si pictured?
Irish irridescence made it onto one of my many want-lists, and Nanna, your picture shows why! Those are some great plants.
Kenton
I like the green blossoms. I have Irish Paradise which is a hard one to find. I grew many did not relizes I have another baby ! And Vintge Irish angel, Irish Flirt for Begonia..Bell's of Ireland , saving one baby for a guy on other group, I think thats the only Irish Av's I have now. I love my ever blooming Aca;s Marie with it's green blossoms and variegated foliage. Georgia Melon an other special green. Never can have too many greens or too many variegated, or Mosaic, or Minis, or trailers...
I love them all. Allison
Kenton, if you mean the plant behind Kermit, that's a Chirita tamiana from makshi... maybe Zantedeschia is its family name? I'm afriad I don't know much about them. I recently put it into a larger pan pot with room to root its several little runners, and it seems to be pretty happy.
Allison, I'm never sure which plants are vintage (probably First Class will help me with that), so if you see any on my posts that you especially want, please be sure to mention them. I'm sure I'll be able to fix you up with a nice selection of girl leaf and others!
Edited to ask Allison if she has 'Lil Bit O Irish' or if that's one I can offer her?
This message was edited Dec 15, 2005 4:30 PM
Sorry I dont think so. I did have a couple leaves down so I might lol I'll keep an eye out.when watering Allison
Sorry Jill, not the last picture, bu the one with the Parasite tap. Zantedeschia= Calla lily.
Ed. to ask Allison (I may have asked before...) What is your favorite AV. I know that is a terrible thing to ask, but what comes to mind first?
And you, Jill?
And heck, that top name from anybody else?
This message was edited Dec 15, 2005 2:37 PM
My favorite is my Chimera Sunray Trail
No, no.... Allison, I *have* 'Lil Bit O Irish' -- that's the one Kermit has his arm around! I know you already have 'Irish Flirt', so I was hoping I had an "irish" violet that I could offer you that you didn't have.... I'll put 'Lil BIt O Irish' on your wish list in my trade tracker.... I have a couple of leaves down for her.
My favorite AV?? Oh, that's a tough one.... Didn't somebody else on the forum mention that their favorite is whichever one is in bloom now? :-D Nanna's "Gypsy" noid is special to me, not only because it is beyond gorgeous with its pinwheel blooms, but also because it came from her and reminds me of our delightful road trip to "violet heaven!"
LOL Kenton about the Calla Lily! I found that one in October at the bottom of a pot that my neighbor gave me when she moved last year! It was trying to sprout, poor thing, so I planted it. As I recall, it blooms in a peachy color that's not my favorite, but I do love the leaves. Perhaps when it blooms I will give it away to a neighbor who will appreciate it!
Peachy, eh? Wonder what variety that is... Hm.
You'll need to rest it to bloom it again.
Hey Jill, how is your Gypsy doing? Is she still in bloom? The mother is in bloom again but is sporting and only one blossom stem shows the pinwheel. The others are red. The other succor that I have is just about finished blooming with no buds in sight. I noticed today that there is a birth mark on one of the leaves, which means that my succor is begining to sport also. Hope yours remains true.
Nanna

My Gypsy doesn't have open flowers at the moment, but I can see several buds forming! When she blooms, she will immediately be pressed into service as a centerpiece! :-)
Kenton, it has been "resting" for a year! I'm amazed that it sprouted, actually. I didn't even know it was in there until I dumped the old soil out of the pot....

Some of the tiny leaved ones I haven't had much luck propagating (Twinkles Blue & Pink, Child's Play, Marion's Enchanted Trail, Teeny Bopper), but I'll keep trying with them.
Allison & Lorry, I love that you have such long lists -- makes me sure I'll be able to put together a trade that you'll like! It might be helpful if you LMK your "top 3" or "top 5" picks, and I'll put your names on those plantlets as they're potted up.... Then in spring, I'll sort out everything that's ready to send out and divvy them up according to wish lists!
Oh you can send me any of them you can ! I like being surprised ! Don't forget to save enough plants/leaves for your Secret Easter Bunny Awap Buddy :))
Allison

Sulfur Powder Anti Mildew - 2 Ounce bag $1
Goose Gardens is great ,i have bought pots and leaves from them.
Oh, not to worry.... my Secret Easter Buddy has first dibs! But I'm not telling what s/he is getting.... shhhhh....
:-D
PS, the mildew that I blew off the leaves on a few AVs yesterday has not returned... I have hopes that setting up the heat mats and rearranging the shelves has done the trick by making temperatures a little more consistant in the basement. In the morning room, I turned the ceiling fan on, and that seems to be helping there. I really appreciate all the suggestions! I know everyone is rooting for the survival of all those cute little plantlet & leaf pots.... :-)
Wow. Looks like a few of us are annexing our homes...
*That* is what I "need" for Christmas -- A violet annex!! I love Allison's description of her AV space.... :-)
We were at the office Christmas party last weekend.... I mentioned my interest in gardening, and Jim said something about my "hundreds" of african violet plants.... The gal sitting across from me said, well Jill, it sounds like what you need is a greenhouse! And every head turned to look, not at me, but at Jim! (including mine) LOL
He said there could be a greenhouse in my future..... but not in my very immediate future! Hahahahaha Hey, there's a reason I haven't put in any garden beds along the east side of the house.... I'm saving that spot! I can see a little doorway on the other side of the dining room, leading out into a lean-to style greenhouse.... The south end of the greenhouse would meet up nicely with the pathway from the herb garden behind the dining room... Now, bear in mind that the herb garden also exists only in my head! The area that will become the herb garden has been tilled & amemded for a couple of years (it was a major chile pepper bed this summer), but the low stone wall and stepping stone pathway and formal layout with thyme borders and a ring of oregano etc has not gone beyond the paper drawing stage!
Wow, how far off topic did I just get??
I need sleep. If the roads aren't too icy, we're leaving for NC tomorrow.... going to visit DH's parents for a few days! Mom is doing a big music program with the choir on Sunday, and then we'll have an early Christmas celebration together before they leave for a week in Boston. Wow, that was ever further OT! Oh well, I'm going to hit "send" now....
Very Nice Jill. I like that idea...
And safe driving.
(Why I'm awake: I slept from 5-9, then went out (for the moonlight) to try to sneak some bulbs into the ground at the park, which is unfortunately frozen. Now it's time to go back to bed for me too.)
Kenton
Critter..I am sure anything you sent if fine.
I will let you know how I do with propagating the small leaf varieties..I have a few of them up also!
