Bacon Thins

Northport, ME(Zone 5b)

Remember them? They got a smaller and smaller hole on the shelf and now gone. Did they find out they were as bad as DDT? With a blob of cream cheese... Nothing better. I can still get Wheat Thins. Have to look carefully though. I don't want reduced fat, no salt, no taste. Buying Cheesits I have to watch out for the Sponge- Bob ones. All I want is a box of crackers.

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Looks like they, and a whole bunch'a others were discontinued. Whats funny is i can remember eating, and really liking, them, but i'm not sure when they were discontinued.

The following is a list of crackers that we most commonly receive questions about, and have been discontinued:
NABISCO APPLE TEASERS
NABISCO BACON THINS
NABISCO CELERY THINS
NABISCO CORN DIGGERS
NABISCO DANDY OYSTER CRACKERS
NABISCO NUTTY WHEAT THINS
NABISCO OYSTERETTE CRACKERS
NABISCO PARTY THINS
NABISCO RITZ CRACKER CRUMBS
NABISCO SIP 'N CHIP SNACK CRACKERS
NABISCO TRIANGLE THINS
NABISCO WARM WELCOME!

Bacon Thins, just the thought of them, i loved them. they were thin, of course, and oval shaped and yummy. now i am gonna want them tonight, right now.

Denver, CO

They were discontinued here years ago, but summer of 04 was a good year, because a nice shopping center in Illinois had them when I was there. I bought a few boxes to bring home. In recent times, their appeal is almost reproduced with a nice bacon quesadilla...

I never tried any of the above so I guess I won't be missing them.
I like the cylinder shaped Cheese Nips, don't see them anymore. If they have them they aren't the same shape and texture.

It's an old marketing rule: If everybody doesn't want them, nobody gets them"

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I was glad to see that the Sundried Tomato and Basil Wheat Thins weren't on that list. I was afraid they were discontinued because I can't find them very often. I'm addicted to those things.

JoanJ,

Did you ever make your own dehydrated tomatoes? They are easy to do, and a great way to preserve extra tomatoes, particularly if you have a convection oven with a dehydrate temperature to it.

My wife and I just slice plum or cherry or other tomatoes thinly, lay them on a plastic grid, sprinkle with salt, pepper, garlic, basil, onion powder and put in oven to dehydrate till dry. They keep in jars in the cupboard for a long time, and in the freezer for even longer. I am sure that if one did an internet search, one could find a recipe for baking one's own wheat thins using sundried tomatoes.

All of that said, I would certainly understand it if you said, "Hey, sounds good, but I don't have the time. I prefer just to buy the commercial wheat thins.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

LOL, I most likely would prefer to buy the commercial wheat thins.

However, I use sun dried tomatoes for other things, so making my own would be a great idea. I have a dehydrator, do you think that would work?

I buy sun dried tomatoes and put them in the dough when making buns. It's a nice variation from the plain old white buns all the time, plus adds a little extra nutrition.

Hi, Joan.

Well, it depends on your dehydrator. My wife and I bought one off eBay and we tried to dry cherry tomatoes in it, and it appeared it would take till 2020 for them to dry properly so we sold it to someone else on eBay! Then we got a fantastic deal on a convection oven on eBay and have been using that ever since for drying stuff. If you have a good dehydrator then very possibly it would work for tomatoes. But you can get some great deals on convection ovens on eBay, if you want to take a look. We have been using the convection oven for all kinds of things instead of either the regular oven or the microwave oven. We love it!

Adios!

Good idea! I may even put that on my Christmas list for Santa and if I don't get it, then pick one up on ebay.

One thing I do make in my dehydrator is jerky, and it turns out great.

This is why I love DG. This morning TomTom was teaching me how to make flower pots on the container gardening forum all the way from Japan. Now I'm learning how to make sun dried tomatoes and beef jerky. LOL :)

Can you describe how you use the convection for drying. My microwave is also a convection.

Hi, Stownes. Well, there is nothing to explain as such, about how I use the convection oven for dehydrating, because it has a setting that says "dehydrate." I just put it at that setting and turn it on, and leave the oven door open about an inch or so. If you have the microwave instructions, I hope perhaps it will say something in there about how to dehydrate with it.

Will have to look for the microwave instructions and see. Thanks.
