OK, TIME TO CONFESS: What lilies did you order for 2006?

Myrtle Beach, SC

Hi Neal, don't buy Brugs !! I have plenty to share with you. I will include some cuttings when I send your bulbs Monday, 12-26, then come Spring I can send a bunch from the cuttings I am rooting now.
Lilies, other bulbs, daylilies and Brugs are my garden weaknesses. I have been so blessed this year from my friends here at Dave's. I can provide you with a list of the Brugs I have in January. I have cuttings rooting all over my house, the greenhouse and in a covered plant shelf on my pool deck. (They're everywhere, they're everywhere,LOL)
Anyway, if there is a special Brug you are looking for, ask around. Annapet (Moonglow) has an incredible selection. She and I have shared back and forth several times. There are some extraordinary people in the Brug forum too. I can't even begin to tell you all the awesome trades I was lucky enough to make this past year. So...just go to plantfiles and look around and see what intrigues you, if I have it, I'll make sure you get a piece of it when it is cuttable.
God bless and Merry Christmas, Margo

Brug forum is pretty cool

Corte Madera, CA

neal and the rest of the gang, please listen to margo! DO NOT BUY BRUGS. we'll have plenty by spring. 'chele's fault (just kidding). she got me started with my double brug love. lol.

mendy, a bucket full of daffs....crazy about them! i don't think i planted enough....(sigh).

kathy, i potted up b. sang RED seedlings yesterday. assuming i don't kill them, you'll get one by spring.

wanda, what an awesome project. i haven't been actively adding photos to the database, and i should.

nery, brug forum is awesome. a year-round party. lol.

Annapet, you made my day. Such great news about getting that red!! I just started on brugs this fall. Someone sent me a bunch of cuttings this fall-a day I came home sick from the ER before my gallbladder surgery (now I'm doing great without it). That made my day also. Are you or Margo the brug fairy?????

Corte Madera, CA

glad to bring some cheer! so, let's hope i don't kill them. lol.

margo is one of my brug fairies! i can't wait to get my brug fairy wings =).

somewhere, PA

oooohhh noooooo... I feel like I'm slipping into another *aholicism...
brugaholicism.... Do they need lots of light? Warmth? ooooooh nooooo...

Corte Madera, CA

tammy, many brug experts and hybridizers live in your zone.

wink, wink...just think of it as "something to do" while we're our bulbs and lilies are out of seson. lol.

once you get one, there is NO turning back. which one do you like? i should have many to share come spring.

somewhere, PA

You can grow them outdoors here? I'm gonna do a little research on them.

Thanks Margo and Annapet. Yes, I've been lurking around the brug forum preparing to get my feet wet. I only have a couple of white varieties I rooted in fall and would love some of the scrump colors out there. Guess I should start with tough, resistant varieties, but I'm open to try anything! LOL

Tammy, I see brug madness in your future! You've got a greenhouse-there's no reason to resist! Seeing Kell's pics (how she combines them with other plants) has pulled me in.

somewhere, PA

i think you're right. I feel myself slipping... I fill my greenhouse completely full each spring
with seedlings so this year I bought some lights to help with the overflow. Yep. I'm nuts.
And happy that folks here understand it!

Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas all! I'm off to visit family later today so not sure I'll be
on-line for a few days. (Might sneak some time on my brother's PC to get my fix. hehehe)

Corte Madera, CA

happy new year!

well, still no lilies at costco. perhaps a few more weeks.

the sun was out and i sprayed my roses! i hope i don't kill them. remembered to use messenger, and i did my own special (hopefully not deadly) mix. lol.

messenger
neem oil (first time ever)
epsom salt
super thrive (new also to me)

chant LILIES with me. ummmmmmmm....

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

*yuuuummmmmmmm*

Corte Madera, CA

lol.

i like YUMMMMMMM better! thanks.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Must've been a Freudian thing. ;)

Myrtle Beach, SC

Ohhh AnnaPet, please let me know how that mixture works out for you and what proportions you used. I will be spraying everything in about 4-5 weeks.
My brug cuttings have all rooted and have bunches of leaves, my crinums are peeking out from under their mulch, my miniature roses are blooming their hearts out!
Ohhh, how I wish Costco would get their J & P roses and the lilies. I can't wait to see the American Series Lilies bloom. I love bright intense colors mixed in with the more subtle shades of pink, light yellow and cream. It's going to be an exciting Spring for sure.
God bless you all, Margo

Corte Madera, CA

hi, margo! you mean, no roses at your costco yet? well, i haven't gone back to mine. i was able to go to another costco, but the roses there have been picked on already.

for every gallon of water:

1 packet of messenger
1 oz of neem oil (that's what the neem directions of use said)
1 tbsp epsom salt
1/4 tsp of super-thrive (according to bottle also)

i wanted to add VF-11 in the mix, but i haven't shopped yet since the rain stopped.

EDITED TO ADD LINK:

i'll fertilize tomorrow.

=)

i hope 2006 has been fabulous so far!

Margo and Annapet, I can hardly wait, and I have to wait longer than either of you! I have'nt started scouting Lowes yet, but I'll bet the bulbs will be here any day. Later for the roses though. I have been installing lights so I can get more things started indoors this year, so now I'm tempted to check out the seeds to. Happy hunting all! Neal.

somewhere, PA

I started some seeds on 12/31 and the first are germinating! I've got a hardy gloxinia from Todd Boland
going. (I know - not a lily but Neal's seed comment made me think of it.). Neal - you'll LOVE having those
lights. I took rose cuttings from a gorgeous old rose at my mom's last fall and the cuttings are starting to
grow leaves under my lights now.

Corte Madera, CA

neal, i started some seeds in november, and thought i won't need lights as long as my seeds are placed south-facing. then it just got darker and darker. hubby got me the costco shelf unit (48" wide), then lights and light fixture at home depot. the seedlings seem happy.

back to lilies, i still will have to pot these beauties up. hopefully next year, i'll have a bed for them.

Myrtle Beach, SC

Hi Gang !!
Went to Cosco again and NO Roses or Lilies :( I went to their Office and they pulled it up on their computer and said they had no delivery date record. Sad, sad, sad !!
Annapet, that mixture sounds terrific! Covers all the needs except food. Easy too, once all mixed up. Wow, GF, you rock. What a time saver.
Packages out of here Monday and Tuesday. I took early retirement last May but it seems there is always something going on here. I have had out of town Family since December 22. I love it, truly I do. I would rather cook and plan for my Family than eat when I am hungry but I need to return to "normal" LOL I need to crawl around on my knees and play in the dirt for a day or two !! (There, now I have vented and feel better) God bless you all, Margo

Corte Madera, CA

Oh, my. No roses or lilies, and no delivery date record? How is that possible?

Last year, I used Miracle-Gro weekly for my roses. This year, I really would like to try VF-11 instead. For the soil, and also to foliar feed. Will add to the mixture. I haven't fertilized my roses this year yet because the soil is soggy wet from the rain.

Wow, Christmas in Janaury =).

I'm off to church, and will check back with you all later.

Corte Madera, CA

Oh, alfalfa tea for my roses this year!

=)

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Back from church already?? ;)

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

I used alfalfa tea on my roses and beardless iris. Great results-lots of buds right after!!!

Myrtle Beach, SC

Dumb question here~~ but what is alfalfa tea and how do you make it ? How much do you use per plant ? (dang it's hard being new :)
God bless, Margo

Corte Madera, CA

moby, church took all day! i just got back =). been such a good girl hubby took me nursery shopping. but i only had 2 things on my list: VF-11 and alfalfa pellets.

margo, there are many variations of the alfalfa tea recipe. here's the one i followed, but made the five gallon version.

see, we have a testimonial from kathy!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

So how do you know a basil break from a sucker?

Corte Madera, CA

moby, i wouldn't have any clue how to tell basal breaks from suckers. luckily, ALL my roses are own-root. i only started to grow roses last year, and great timing i read about own-root and jackson & perkins had a sale i couldn't refuse.

perhaps neal knows.

oh, neal!

=)

Corte Madera, CA

...about the lily garden, neal. what a troublemaker you are! lol.

"orange crush" would be awesome with "wild blue yonder"....sigh. i shouldn't spend anymore.

Myrtle Beach, SC

AnnaPet....where is "wild blue Yonder"? I can't find it at Lily Garden :((

Corte Madera, CA

ah, silly me. it's a new rose. grandiflora of the year, i think.

http://www.jacksonandperkins.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?superitem=32545&category_sel=244

i'm going to try to pair roses with brugs and lilies.

Myrtle Beach, SC

I'm sure it will be beautiful, please post pictures for us to "ohhh and ahhhh" over :)) Love, Margo

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Hi all! A sucker is growth from below the bud union (the big knot at the base of the canes), and I think basal growth comes from the bud union. The sucker growth is from an old, once blooming rose, usually 'Dr Huey' that is used as root stock. Basal growth, if I'm not mistaken is growth of the cultivar you paid for.

Orange Crush! Ahhhhh, I love that one! And now I have a real "need" to shop for some more lilies for the new bed of fruity, sunrise/sunset colors, hehehe. I was having trouble placing salmon, peach, apricot, mango, and melon colors, so now I have a whole new island bed to dedicate to them. So far I've just been trying to make my rose selections (and that's enough to fill my mind to the point of exploding! The world of roses is huge!), but since roses and lilies make wonderful companions, lilies are next!

While The Lily Garden is pricy, I love their quality, selection, and drive to create more great garden lilies. Many of the Dutch hybrids have been developed for the cut flower industry, but Judith Freeman's introductions are tested for garden worthy attributes (like longevity and disease resistance). I stumbled upon an ebay seller (luckybusya) in fall who sells some of the harder to find varieties offered by The Lily Garden and B&D. I bought 'Arabian Red' and 'Oscar' Orientals and 'Golden Sunburst' Aurelian from her at good prices.

I'm doing alfalfa tea this year to. I've been keeping up with those threads and am totally convinced. I'm considering trying to brew some indoors for my houseplants.
Neal.

Corte Madera, CA

neal, thanks for the info.

i'm making alfalfa tea today.
