Schroon Lake, NY(Zone 4a)

What nobody's here?? They're all still on the the other Dec 6!!
Oh well. This one's shorter!!
I missed yesterday altogether and it's like cramming to try to catch up.

Sheila, more prayers as you get used to life without Oskar. So sorry to hear of your loss.

McCool, we had pantry moths all summer, we have the little traps all over the house... They are awful to get rid of!! But the grub farming sounds like a good idea otherwise, for your feathered friends. A couple days ago you remarked on passing through Schroon Lake. Nope, no one knows what a schroon is!! Me neither. They think it may have been a corruption of Scaroon from some French woman who summered there or something. I used to like it when the stores in town sold t-shirts that said "Where the heck is Schroon Lake". In the last two years it's been "discovered" and the amount of building is depressing. It was mountains with trees, now it's all pockmarked by cleared, chemical lawns and fancy log camps. Oh well. Progress.

defoe, I'm going to make some ornaments for Jen. I think if everyone sent one meaningful ornament it would help - she might get overwhelmed if everyone sent bunches.

MaryE, I'm glad your horse is better. I wonder if she bruised her hoof on the frozen ground? We have problems with the frozen, irregular mud, until it gets covered with snow.

darius, you seem to be weathering the strife of your move admirably! Or are you just numb at this point?

I'm going back to see who all is on the other thread now - take care everyone!!

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Good morning all,

This again will have to be a quick greeting, mostly. I've spent my morning Internet time looking at some sobering pictures froom New Orleans. I've been in touch with a violist from NO whose recent CD is reviewed in my newsletter and I needed an address where I could send the newsletter. He sent along a link to his website. Thought some of you might like to take a look. Caution, if you have slow dial-up it will take quite awhile as there is also a sound clip.

Quoting:
I don't know if you've seen them, but I've put up some pictures of our NO house (before and after) on my website:
http://www.scottslapin.com/graphics/KatrinaPhotos/katrina.html

At the bottom there are also pictures of the neighborhood, the orchestra's hall etc.

New Orleans today (unfortunately) doesn't look too different than it did three months ago...

Gotta get breakfast and get to work, but will check back later.

Ann

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Good morning all. Slept well, but not long enough. Have a busy day ahead, so thought I would check in early. The weatherman says we are to get snow tonight and tomorrow, yeah, yeah, yeah!!

To clear up the item about MSJEN. I think sending 1 ornament each, maybe one from our own tree which means something, would be a better idea. I did't mean to run out and buy several ordinary ones, as she can do that. So not a"drive" but an individual effort, to let her know we're thinking of her.

Julie, if you lived close enough to help with my computer illiteracy, I would drive you crazy with my many questions, and then Why?!! But until I am in an area where I can get DSL, downloading, posting pics, etc is just too much of a pain.

Well it is grocery shopping day, so I will return here very harried hopefully about noon. Will check in then.

Have a hot buttermilk biscuit and some homemade strawberry preserves this morning.

Have a good day.

Lambertville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Good Morning! Brrrr Cold this morning, 22. Have the day off and taking Mom Christmas shopping.

Darius - I hope you get some news from the movers and that it's not too bad.

M5 - Hope you have a good day today!

Okus - What a cute story!

Need more coffee, be back.

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

Morning Everyone!

Today is Nathan's Birthday! He is 15. My Baby isn't supposed to be that old yet. Isn't he still supposed to be a toddler? Not this surly, snarky, horemone laden invader that shows up every so often.

Sheila, I didn't want to say anything yesterday, but my dad's dog Chelsea joined Oskar at the Bridge yesterday afternoon. I had to take her, Dad couldn't. I wanted to take her 2 weeks ago, but Dad wasn't ready. She was at least 14, maybe 15.

And that is enough about that.

Dubuque: -14*
Waterloo: -15*
Cedar Rapids: -13*
Manchester had -22* earlier!!!
No wind right now here, but we had -45* wind chill a little while ago. Brrrrrr.

Edited because I can't spell, lol, even with spell check!

MG - Sorry about your Dad's dog. It's always hard. I had to laugh about your description of the 15 year old. My "baby" is 18. The moods are interesting arn't they?

Hey, where is Sarv?

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Good morning, every one
Suzie, we have same temp here, it is cold, Samson wanted me to throw some balls, cold does not bother him in the least , finally had to put on a coat, hat and gloves, I am sitting here, still cold.
Wish you a better day, M5, each day will get easier to be without Oscar though you will always think of him. We had Lilly, a maine coon, she came to us from nowhere, would only go into Richard's lap and stay there what seems like forever, he loved here specially when he became so very ill but she was getting old, I think about 14 yyears, got sick and we we had to say good bye, tears were streamiing down DH face, it was very sad for him especially. I thought of getting another pet but DH needed 24 hour care and I don't think I could have handled a new pet properly on top of everything as he was becoming more and more ill. He would just adore Samson, I can hear Richard laugh at his antics while running trying to catch snow flakes.

Ann, thank you for for posting link to Scott Slapin's Music but the devestation of his home and others is just horible

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Am I confused with the date? Is anybody home?

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Maria, not sure exactly who you mean, but tgif has a wonderful collction of cast iron hanging in her kitchen.

Albany, OR(Zone 8a)

MG, tell Nathan Happy Birthday from me. Yes, enjoy the up coming years with him. Life is just beginning with him. lol Onto the driving days!!! You will be pulling out your gray hairs each day until he graduates now, hehe.
That is true, Where is Sarv??? Either shopping or eating, probably. hehe

Well, nothing new around here. Just need to get those dang Christmas cookies made and baked tonight after work.

Hugs to you, Sheila. Gentle pets to the other kitties.

Carol (DR)

Good Morning!!! Late for me today. I checked in earlier, but then had to use the phone, so had to shut off the computer. We're still in the dark ages here -can't use phone and computer at the same time. WHOOOE if I could, I wouldn't get a thing done all day!!!

Cold and crisp here today - 61 in the house when I got up= brrrr. Sun is out now and the trees are covered with a beautiful layer of white clean snow - looks real pretty! I need to go out and get some groceries- DH is complaining there's nothing to eat - which really means- no ice cream in the freezer or yogurt!! I"m going to go just before he gets home from work so HE can carry the groceries down the steps... I hate that job!

Watched a stupid program on Dr Phil about dating (don't know why I watched it - I'm not interested in dating), but it almost sickened me....man this world sure has gone to the dogs..

mg- happy birthday to Nathan - he'll turn back into a human in a couple of years. Sorry to hear about your dad's dog. I wish someone would have offered to take our cat - she suffered way too long before something was done. I was an absolute basket case over the whole situation.

Never had moths in the house, just ants. (and those nasty earwigs in the summer) We seem to have a huge population of spiders this winter tho. - especially in our bathroom = ugh.

pass me a buttermilk biscuit and some jam - yum. I was stuck with ordinary peanut butter toast this morning - nothing else exciting in the frig.. I need to step on the scale, but think I will put it off until Jan 2. New diet starting then .....

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

That's who I meant, Darius, you see I was wrong on both counts, thank you! Guess I was wrong with the date too
Just pulled ot an apple pie, still hot. Did not have enogh apples so it is kind of flat, but too icy and cold to go get more would have to drive 10 miles one way

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Good morning. Mg, I hope you get some warmer weather soon. It's a balmy sounding 0 here this morning and without any wind. Yesterday by the time I left for town the breeze was getting pretty strong, and by the time I got home I was hurrying between pickup and house getting everything inside before I got cold. Then I had chores to do before it got dark.

M5, Oskar sounds like the perfect cat. None will ever measure up to him. We had one years ago by whom we have measured all other cats. Some of our others have had some of his good points, but ole Sneakers had it all.

We didn't get the old microwave up from the basement yet, hubby was on the computer working on a long report for work and between getting home from work and going to bed he only stopped to eat dinner. So, the microwave waits another day. This morning the old one is not working again, I didn't mess with it long, gave up and heated some water for my tea on the stove while I was cooking hubby's breakfast. Usually I put the water in the cup, add a tea bag and zap it. Carol (the English one) does that make you shudder? I can remember my English grandmother heating her water in a whistling tea kettle, pouring the water through a fine strainer with the tea, waiting while it steeped. She only drank coffee rarely but drank a lot of tea. Lipton's of course, the brisk tea. I didn't know there was any other brand until I started to do my own grocery shopping.

Yesterday I went to the library and got some books by Eugenia Price. My neighbor was reading one when I visited her and she told me what a good author this lady was, and that she wrote historical novels in her later years. Before that she wrote Christian books, so I knew these would be in good taste. I hate getting into a good book aways and finding it gets trashy.

I'll be back later. Sun is up, snow is sparkly and the woodstove has just started to produce some heat but so far not much heat hasn't reached the office. My tea needs reheating, maybe I will punch a few buttons and see if that stubborn microwave will work for one more day.

Starkville, MS

Maria - Julie had a "senior moment" and got the date a little off (she's entitled - she works hard at keeping us up and going!).

Yep! That's me with the cast iron. What's in the pic isn't actually all that I have. The rest is scattered around here and there.

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

there is an D-email for you, tgif

(Zone 8b)

MaryE, tea and I don't like each other at all, I only drink coffee!! Tea, china/iced/ herbal / indian/ whatever makes me upchuck - so I don't ever brew it. My son on the other hand drinks it all the time, but he won't let me make it, tells me I don't get enough practice to know how!! LOL Not very English of me - I blame the other half of me - the one that is from New Zealand!!!! LOL
My English grandmother would have had forty fits at your method though! Freshly drawn water, bring it to the boil, pour a little into the teapot to warm it, throw that away. Then put the tea in the pot add the still boiling water and leave to brew for 3 minutes. Put the milk in the cup first add then pour in the tea and add sugar if required, stir and sip. Quite a performance. Oh and cover the pot with a tea cosy to keep it warm for refills.
I do use a kettle to boil water though - I use it to make coffee, because I only drink instant. We have "proper" coffee for DH and visitors, but not for me - I'm just a disgrace!!

Well the ice storm arrived, it is now supposed to be going to snow on top which should make the roads a death trap. I'm going nowhere!! Texans are not used to driving on snow and ice, so even if i know how to handle it there is no guarantee the others will, not risking it!!

i think it might be time for coffee and a dohnut. They are on the counter if anyone is interested, covered in sugar and full of jam so watch out for the dribbles.!

Just saying a quick good morning to all,,,busy in the Salon today so don't have but a minute. Well, quick minute,,,,LOL,,,gotta go,,cust. here,,LOL

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Carol, that is exactly how I make tea, some times when as a visitor the hostess will make tea for me but will start making it before the water boils, you should her me yell at her, put that back till the water really boils lol, good thing we are close friends, lol

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Well, found out about the "glitch" the U-Haul/Rental place has for me... NO storage space for at least 2 weeks! The unit that was to be available now has the tenant's lock back on it, looks like they are not giving it up. They do have a smaller one but I doubt it would hold everything. Plus, it's temperature controlled so higher rental charge.

I got some other phone numbers but before I could make any calls the power went off. Of course, I only have a cordless phone, requiring power. So, I went to town and had a late breakfast and now the power is back on.

So after 1pm I'll make some phone calls to see if I can find another storage unit reasonably close by. (Everything here closes 12-1 for lunch.)

dmc, I think I'm just numb now. Be glad when this is finished and I arrive safely in Florida.

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Darius, I am so sorry things are not going right for you, no wonder your are numb , it seems you have one problem after the other how unfair is that? Very!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Maria, years ago there was a comic strip character that always had a black cloud over his head, following him around. Sometimes I think that black cloud found me after they discontinued the comic strip!

Actually, I think bad times help build character and compassion.

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

don't I know that, Darius?

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Good luck hunting down storage Darius. Geeez if it aint one thing it's another. Sucks to be you....right now anyway. Wasn't that Joe Bxfltpxz or something like that?

Only had one meltdown this morning. Spent the rest of the time wrapping packages for the postoffice. Last visit, (Monday) it was jammed, and I use one that is seldom busy. Today will be another wait I'm sure.

But it's noon and I'm not even dressed yet, or had breakfast. Went on Ebay last night and bought additional Blue Willow place settings that weren't available at the supermarket in '84 when they had them on a special sale. Just a little retail therapy. Bought two complete place settings, which included cups and saucers. Asked if she would reduce the price if I didn't want them....sent me an email and took the price down a lousy $2 for each set. Guess I'll get them and resell them. Anybody want 4 cups/saucers?

gotta go. Good day to all (grabbing donut on the way out)

M5, drill a drainage hole in them and put a small plant in them. Something like a small fern, a little AV, maybe some muscari bulbs for forcing? I can picture a little line of them by your kitchen window or on your table as a centerpiece to beat the winter blahs.

Central, WI(Zone 4a)

oooo, darius,,,good luck and I agree with you, it does build character,,, I think I have built enough character in the last 5 years that I prolly have enough for a little while anyway. Would be nice to have a little character building rest for awhile,,, I know that goes for All of us here,,,,LOL

Hi to everyone...Apologies (again) for entering the wrong date on the thread title. I usually have my mind on something when Dec 7th rolls around. (My dad was at Pearl Harbor...and today as well as his birthday - New Years Eve - tend to put me in 'remembrance mode.')

I'm babysitting so don't have time to sit here.

TTYL,

LOL Kelly I rmember in the "dark days" my brother saying all the difficulty would build character and I burst into hysterics crying "I HAVE ENOUGH CHARACTER!~!!!

Luckily I'm still coasting on all that character (thank you God).

I remeber Joe Btfsplk!! They need to bring him back. He's a man for our times!!

MaryE What books by Eugenia Price? Name rings a bell...I'm needing some more books.

Maria I smelled the pie!! Nothing like apple pie hot from the oven!!

darius wish we could help...you need a break

Everyone else - nice seeing you! Taking a break here from card and ornament crafting!!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Yippee, I found a storage unit!! AND, it's within 5 miles of the one I was supposed to get. Have to go this afternoon and pay the deposit, supposed to be snow and icy tomorrow.

Central, WI(Zone 4a)

dmc,,,that's how I feel right now,,,,I have enough character for the time being,,,LOL

darius,,,that's awesome,,,good for you

Oh goodness ... Hi y'all
Don't know where my day has gone ... but I've certainly not been on the computer. LOL Have missed every single one of you this morning ... and have skimmed over the posts. Can't remember who said what, but here are my comments. LOL
I love Eugenia Price. When you read her books ... think about me. She write very discriptive books. I've never read a bad book by her. Be sure and read her triligies. Just wonderful! The scenery is just like mine. She can really put it down on paper. Oh, the discription of coastal GA.

Darius, glad you found another storage place.

M5, hope things are better for you today.

Julie, hope you're still having fun.

Mary, something you said struck a note with me and I was going to comment ... but I don't for the life of me remember what it was ... so I'll just say hi for now.

Hi also to Sarv, Kelly, Defoe ... and oh Carat ... good to see you back posting. Missed you. Hi to those I didn't mention by name.

Y'all forgive this messy post today. I'm trying to catch up with everyone. Hugs all way round. :)

Back from the grocery store and $127dollars less in my wallet - man, how can I spend that much!! I bought some butterscotch schnapps (it is hidden in my car...) didn't someone say to add it to hot cocoa?? Seems I remember something like that - pleaseeeee let me know someone!! I have to hide liquor because DH drinks everything like water. Whatever he drinks - water, juice, cider, beer- he downs gallons of it.

Darius- the cloud has moved on....wonderful that you found a new place!! I'm jumping up and down for ya.

Speaking of character - I have enough too. I do believe that misery does visit everyones life, just hangs around longer with some.

M5- I wish I knew more about buying on ebay. But then again, maybe I don't!!! I spend enough with being on that! Love that blue willow pattern.

Haven't heard from my mom and the blood pressure thing today - hoping no news is good news.

Geek - did I tell ya my highlighting job turned out great! I'm proud of myself!! I look pretty spiffy if I do say so!

Well, going out to dinner at my favorite restaurant with a group I used to work with. Most of them are still teaching, so I enjoy hearing all their bellyaches~~

Beautiful soft snow falling and stupid cat is out sitting in it - she is all covered with snow. What a character she is.

Central, WI(Zone 4a)

sarv,,,
Yep,,,I'm pretty sure that would have been me,,,*shy/sly grin*,,,,,add a shot of that Butterscotch Schnapps to your Hot Chocolate and it'll warm you right up,,,I *LOVE* those,,, Have even had a couple too many on occasion,,,LOL

OOOO, I might have to go to the library and look for her books as long as they are being recommended so highly,,,Thanks.

Kelly
