looking for Sanguinea seeds

Springfield, MO(Zone 6b)

Does anybody have any pure wildform Sanguinea seeds? I would like the plain old fashioned tri-color red tube shape, not hybrids. I understand there is a yellow wildform also. I got some seeds from seedman but I don't think they are going to sprout. I also got some "Golden Lady Brugmansia" from them and I can tell by looking that they are Daturas. So I have my doubts if I got genuine Sanguinea seeds from them either. I am pretty new with Brugs and any help you can give me is apprecieated.

Corte Madera, CA

bumping this up.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Most people here do not grow sangs, John. The do not do well in heat and they want cool nights. I used to have them but they would get too mottled. I have some small ones from crosses I made, but they are not near flowering yet.

I think it was Jeanette who was going to cross some sangs, but it will be 9 months to seeds.

Hey Annapet, any pods on that San Francisco sang?

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

You might try Whatcom Seed Co. Seedrack. That is where I got my seeds and they all came out pretty good. Got both red and red with yellow. Very pretty. I think they were $3.65 for 10 seeds or something like that.

I tried to pollenate some on my sister's plant but I haven't been down to see if they did anything. They are in her greenhouse but it is 11 degrees out right now and I don't know how her heater keeps up with it. She has it set for 45.

Corte Madera, CA

ok, kell. next time, i'll get out of the car and take a stroll. and perhaps knock on the door. lol.

jeanette! i was looking for your thread. i fell in love with the photos you posted. ordered the seeds, and can't wait for them to get here.

Springfield, MO(Zone 6b)

Thanks everyone, I will try whatcom.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

I couldn't find the other thread either but I have some of the pictures on my desktop that are not wonderful but will post them.

I called my sis and asked about the pod I tried to start and she said the flower fell off but it appears there is a pod there and maybe seeds starting to grow in it. She is newer than I am. LOL

Here are the pix. Jeanette

thanks, jeanette. oh, wow. i just love it, love it! chanting for the pod.

seeds got here, and i hope i didn't poach them. left them close to the vent (i don't have a heating mat)....either they woke up, and cooked.

john, where did you end up getting yours? nosy people want to know =).

Springfield, MO(Zone 6b)

I ordered from Seedman but havent been happy with their labeling. (see previous post). I then ordered some from Whatcom Seed Co. They only had the red, which was what I was looking for anyway. They haven't arrived yet but I remain hopeful.......:)

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

I got seeds from ebay, pretty expensive for seeds $10 for five and only one germinated, she is still growing but over a year old and looks like a small seedling and the stem is very weak.I won't try any more.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Jnette luv the color on the sang. I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed for your sister.

Springfield, MO(Zone 6b)

It gets hot and humid here in the summer, maybe the Sangs will do O.K. if I bring them in under aircond. for the hotest month or 2. I'm getting ahead of myself, I haven't even had one to sprout yet....I'm looking forward to trying to grow some as an experiment.

Corte Madera, CA

john, have they sprouted yet? i see some seeds breaking out on my sang project. woo-hoo!

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Hey Moonglow, you got seeds sprouting already? Must have been that heating vent. LOL How many did you plant?

I gotta say my sister's did great. She has one in her greenhouse about 8 feet tall (in the planter) the other 2 are about 6+ feet.. They are all (I think she has 3) about 4 feet across. One trunk each. They have a couple of flowers starting to open up now but were in full bloom earlier. I think I deleted the picture. Can't find it.

Jeanette

Corte Madera, CA

oh, wow, you deleted them? lol, your photos were the reason i started lusting for sangs. 15-20 on rockwool (roll eyes - - - what am i going to do with the rest...)

that is so cool about your sister's sangs. i remember they were really quite spectacular (sigh...)

my yellow sang is about to bloom....will post photos.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

A yellow sang.....ooooooh! Post pictures soon!! I've been looking for seeds for a yellow but can't find any.
:) Donna

Corte Madera, CA

the suspense is killing me, donna. will definitely post photos.

john, anything happening with those seeds?

Springfield, MO(Zone 6b)

not yet.........after the soak and cork seed coat removed, they are swollen and have a good color.....but its only been a couple of days.... I wonder if I should germinate at a cooler temp than normal?

Corte Madera, CA

i hope someone in the know tells us.

your seeds didn't come with sowing intructions? this is from rare exotic seeds where i ordered mine from. awesome germination rate. i potted up 6 seedlings today, and will have more.

"Germination:

Easy to grow from seed. Soak seed in warm water for 24 hours before sowing. Place seed on the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost in pots or trays and cover with a fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination. Maintain an optimum temperature of 60-65F (15-18C). Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged; germination usually takes 14-30 days, sometimes more, don't give up. Germination is greatly assisted by applying bottom heat.

What is the bottom heat technique?

If your home is on the low side of 70ºF, your seeds will benefit from bottom heat. Give warmth from underneath to stimulate early growth, and to help seeds to germinate. The ideal situation is to maintain the soil temperature at 70ºF. For this, you use an electric soil warming cable kit, or a heating mat that goes under your flats; or any other source of heat. With the proper temperature, you will cut by 2 or 3 the germination time."

Patience Patience. So hard!!! LOL. I am looking at seeds I have too everyday. I received one packet of seeds that were white when I peeled them and they are all up in less than a week. The rest were dark so older seeds, and I will have a wait on them. I am so excited to have new seeds with different genes than I have on my own.

Looks like good directions to me, Annapet. I personally do not soak mine and I do not have a heating pad. My house is kept cool. If I complain, my DH says "Put on a sweater!" LOL But many people do both things with great success.

I have always wanted a good propagation mat. I know Santa is not going to be getting me one, so I may just get one for myself. I have bought cheapies twice and could not even tell when they were on.

Thumbnail by Kell
Corte Madera, CA

lol, kell. still very low tech, like i told ya. no heat mats either. and DID NOT follow those directions. did the rockwool thing in a ziploc left by the vent. got worried because i left one bag there far too long. seedlings seem ok. but i NEED a good light source. will do your shop lights set up. can't believe i have not done it yet.

what's a good propagation mat? i just LOOOOOVE starting seeds.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

I planted some KBS x Pink Velvet on the 13th. No heat or light. I just checked 2 of them. One is up but not the other. I had soaked them overnight and peeled them.

I hope to get them under light next week. I planted them in the tall cups like your red ones Kell only clear. I only put about an inch of soil in them and then plan on adding soil as they get taller. Like you do tomatoes. What do you think?

Jeanette

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I have put soil on top of the stalks of cuttings and also I have buried log cuttings under dirt after they have sprouted out. None rotted, but the delicate stalk of a seedling may Jeanette. I really do not know. Maybe soemone else has experience doing it that way.

You know even a newly emerged seedling puts out a long tap root very quickly. I have started seeds in those cups and they have done well, loving to put that root all the way down. Just be real careful not to over water.

Thumbnail by Kell
San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

See how long the tap root is on a new seedling.

Thumbnail by Kell
Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Don't know. Maybe I will dig them up and plant higher up in the cup. I wanted to keep them in the cups so they wouldn't get too big. I don't have that much room. Remember what we talked about before Kell? A way to keep them small until it was warm enough to put outside.

Jeanette

Corte Madera, CA

kell, wow. look at those roots. are those costco cups as well? love to see roots grow on mine, so that will be the way to go. doing a costco run tonight. and HD. my seedlings cannot rely on the south facing window light anymore. no sun these days.

jeanette are your sister's sangs growing pods now? =))). goodluck on your seeds.

Columbia, SC

spacewarp, you probably already know that Thompson & Morgan has a listing for the seeds, but then they note "it's not available." Sigh.

Kell,
I love the cups with the dome lids. Are they slurpie cups? I have get some of those?

Crystal

Springfield, MO(Zone 6b)

Woo Hoo! 2 Sang seeds have the white tips of roots coming out. I thought I had thm too warm, they have been 78-80 F the whole time. I get small dome cups at Mc Donalds. Their small shakes come with a dome.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Good for you John!!!!

Sorry, I know you aren't going to believe this Moonglow but I was down there today and didn't go to the greenhouse. There is so much ice everywhere. Guess I should put a spike on the end of my cane. LOL My sister is in Arizona for the holidays so I can't ask her to look.

Our weather has warmed up to 41 degrees today and I am going down to watch the ballgame on Saturday. Gotta borrow a TV. I cannot believe these rules the FCC put on these cable companies. At least that is their excuse. I ordered local channels. The guy comes out here and I have 2 trees in the way of the dish. The cable company cannot hook up my networks because "line of site"
problems is not a reason to give me other networks if I can get local networks. Even if I can't get them.

Those 2 trees by the way, are marked to be cut once the loggers get around to this area. By then the football season will be over and this is the first time the Seahawks have done crap.

What I started to say, before I got sidetracked, is that if the ice melts because of the change in temperature, I will go out to the gh and see what the seed pod :) is doing.

Boy, that sure took a lot to get it out didn't it. Did I put you all to sleep?

Jeanette

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

If anyone is interested there is a beautiful red Sang on ebay. Just like my sisters, yellow on the base turning to deep red on the opening. Mine is orange where this one is a deep red. Beautiful. It closes in a few hours, a live plant in a 4 inch pot for $3 plus $6 shipping.

I didn't see if there were any bids but they have 3 of them so the price probably won't go up.

Jeanette

Hi Jeanette,
I would love to have one. Wish it wasn't so cold so that I could order one. Is there anything that I can order that would take the cold, it's about 34 degress here today.

Crystal

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Crystal,

Sorry, 34 seems warm to me. I know, it isn't necessarily for the plants.

You should look at this ladies ebay list. She has wonderful prices for nice stuff. I guess. I have not ordered anything from her, but you could look at her feedback. I didn't.

Just click on viewing her other stuff. She says she is just a small greenhouse seller. Let me know what you think.

And, Merry Christmas. Jeanette

Corte Madera, CA

jeanette, is it casacolacreek? i googled that seller, and saw tctopcat on another forum. may be the same? if the latter, i ordered from her quite a few times and she has awesome plants. they get to me so lush and green. not even tired from the long trip.

i'm starting more sang seeds today. should i care for them the same way like the other brugs? do they only not like the heat when they are grown up already?

thanks!

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Ok, here is the number on ebay. 7733732870. Her name is
dawn-001. It is all underlined if it makes a difference. She has some really super plants if you can grow them. I told rj about her electric blue peas and he said he was just getting ready to plant some.

As far as treating the Sangs, do them the same as any other seeds. When they are plants, I did not find thqt they were a problem unless they were in the direct sun. I just moved them into the shade and they did fine. Same with the ones my sister did. BTW, there were still tons of ice around her greenhouse today. Even my 4-wheel jeep didn't like it. Our weather wasn't super hot last summer. Maybe in the mid 90s and they did fine in the shade.

Let me know how they do. My daughter came in today from Seattle so she and I are going to set up my shelving for seed starting. She got me a double heat mat with a thermostat for Christmas.

Corte Madera, CA

Thanks for the info, Jeanette.

John, we want photos. LOL. This is way too exciting.

BTW, first night with the lights on, my seedlings responded. Looking up now. Before they were leaning towards the glass (to have a glimpse of the sun). I just need to fatten them up. They have become sort of leggy.

Just waiting for the rain to give me a little break. The pollen on the other bloom must be ready and I'll just pollinate that one, too.

BUZZZ, BUZZZ!

=)

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

You need to get those lights down low to the plants or they will keep getting leggy. an inch or 2 above. Real close.

Jeanette

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

My daughter checked out the Sang the other day and it has a pod about one and a half inches long. Pretty slow I suppose because it has been so cold here.

Corte Madera, CA

happy new year, jeanette! oh, there is a pod! i hope it grows and grows.

the first bloom on mine wilted and has fallen. it lasted for a week though! i guess because it's not in full sun, and the temps are low.

hoping a fat pod grows!

=)
