I always hear the greatest things about Oregon. I think you will love it there. And, for sure, you can raise roses there....

Mount Angel, OR(Zone 8a)

Well, Jan, if I get to Newport, I am looking you up, girl. And I hope you will do the same when you come to the valley. We actually really like Newport ; so chances are I will try to connect up. I figure we are about an hour and a half apart. Welcome welcome, Joann

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

from what I read, some parts of Oregon are apparently much colder than other parts. I guess it's because it appears to be a really big state.
Will either of you live near Medford where Jackson & Perkins Roses is?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Newport is on the central Oregon coast and Medford is more inland. We used to live in Newport before we moved to Tombstone, AZ. I can't wait to get back to the ocean and green trees and the best part is the SEA FOOD. You don't get much sea food in the desert. Hehe.
Looking forward to meeting you Lenjo. I will contact you as soon as I get my computer up and running.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Newport is great. They are doing alot of "tourist" ads now. And I am just up the road from Joann in Vancouver, WA right across the Columbia river from Portland. Will you be Newportjan?

Vegas,NV Filbert, SC(Zone 7b)

Congratulations and have a safe drive.
I am sure you are going to love being back in the middle of trees again after being in tumbleweed heaven. I had to laugh at your seafood comment. Most people in the dry desert states haven't a clue what good seafood tastes like...

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Welcome back to Oregon, Jan! When my family and I go to the coast, Newport is where we usually end up. I would love to meet you sometime!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Hehe, I'm not sure if I can change my name but yes, I will be NewportJan, Anastatia.

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Congratulations Jan. There is an excellent Sheltie breeder in Newport , Sivad Kennels, and Glenesk Kennels across the road in Beaver Creek. That is if you were wanting a Sheltie. But then who wouldn't ?? Anyway, glad to see you moving from the hot and dry to the cool and wet.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I think you can change your name.
I used to live on the coast of NC and I miss the seafood too, and crabing and oystering, and fishing (pier, deep sea, and surf fishing), floundering and just riding the waves.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Balvinie, I used to have a Sheltie and yes they are wonderful dogs. Ours was named Shilo. But I already will have two dogs and that is plenty for now. I will show you pics of my kids. The little border collie, Wendy, will be coming home with me on Sunday. Wallace is the resident man of the house since my DH is in Oregon already.

Welcome back to Oregon! Newport is clear across the state from me and I've only been out to the coast once in the past 12 years, but who knows, we might get to meet in the middle sometime. Dave will let you change your screen name one time, so consider carefully. Oh, love that seafood, nothing like having it fresh. Do some beachcombing for me, ok?

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

Welcome back to Oregon. We used to live in Coos Bay and Myrtle Point and when my DH retires we are hoping to be able to sell this place and buy something closer to the coast. I need my fix of whalewatching and DH needs his fix of deep sea fishing and we both love fresh seafood. We LOVE Newport !

Hope to see you next summer. Right now we are on the west coast of Idaho lol That is how my DH says it anyway.

Woodspirit, Oregon has a 300 plus mile long coastline. There is a range of mountains called the Coast Range just inland from the coast about 20 miles max and then there is a large valley called the Willamette Valley that is probably 50 miles at its maximum width but it runs probably half the length of the state. The Willamette River runs through the valley and dumps into the Columbia which separates Oregon and Washington. At the east end of the valley is another taller mountain range, the Cascades. Then across those Cascades, Central and Eastern Washington where it is much much drier, colder and hotter. Some is desert and desert like. Mary E lives almost to the Idaho border and Anastastia lives right on the northern border but just across from Portland in Washington. Mgh is in the middle of the Willamette Valley about an hour from Newport. I am about 45 minutes north and east of mgh and an hour south of Anastastia. I am sure I have got you thoroughly confused. Here in the Willamette Valley we get lots and lots of winter, spring, fall rain. Our summers are dry but fairly mild. My hubby is a native Oregonian so is has webfeet; LOL, he really gets tired of the rain and wind. But he is a farmer and wouldn't live anywhere else. They say in Oregon we don't tan but rust. LOL

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

LOL Lenjo! I think you gave a great description of Oregon. I grew up in Klamath Falls (high desert, elevation approx. 4500 ft.) .....southern part of OR. I used to think people were crazy for thinking OR got so much rain.....then I moved to the Willamette Valley (temperate rainforest, elevation approx. 300 ft.) What a change it is from where I grew up!

Jan, welome back to Oregon, I used to love going to Newport........I dont know when I would be able to get down there though when i go visit family in Vancouver and portland. Will try, and if I do, I will surely let you know.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

It sounds like y'all have a makings for a round-up. Lenjo, you did not confuse me at all. I could visualize your whole state by your description. I would have to live in the eastern I think. I'm used to the rain. I take it the Willamette runs north, then. The French Broad runs north here for a little ways but then turns west in Asheville, NC and then eventually goes southwest into the Little Tennessee and then south into the Mississippi. In my area, it is a beautiful trout stream. Did I ever tell you that I have a record for trout-fishing in N.C?

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

I live in far western Idaho just a mile from the border of eastern Oregon. I can see the Snake River trees from our house and that is the border through this area. Seems Idaho owns the land to the middle of the river and Oregon owns the other side. Our area is arid high desert similar to what MaryE is living in since she is only about 100 miles from us. We have sagebrush hills and the summers are hot and dry and the winters are moderately cold and always at least a breeze is going through here. A rare day is one with no breeze or wind.

I grew up in western Montana trout fishing every time I got a chance. I love fishing but haven't gone in many years other than one float trip we took this summer. DH only likes deep sea fishing so when we move closer to the coast I will finally get to fish again.

What is your record? That is great!

Lani

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

er, well I'm talking about fishing down a trout stream with very slippery rocks.
My record is that I have fallen in more times in one trip than anyone else in North Carolina.

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

FOFLMBO! I have done that myself but I didn't get the record for it. LOL I did a nice head dive once too that was to the delight of my brother since he was standing there watching me when the bank gave way. LOL Not my idea of a graceful entry into the water of a beautiful mountain stream and OH BOY was that water COLD!!!!!!!!!! Glacier fed streams are not known to warm up even in the summer. brrrrrrr

Crossville, TN

Oh Jan...I knew it was coming...but I will miss you. But, hey....I've never been to Oregon...YET! LOL Jo

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

Come on up Jo! Just point your car north and then when you get to Idaho point it west but before you cross the border come see me first.

Yup a good NW roundup is in order for next year sometime.

Crossville, TN

Have it near an airport...I can't drive that far...I don't even drive to Tucson...but I can be packed and ready in less than an hour. Jo

There is an EXCELLENT aquarium in Newport. I go to Oregon once a year, and the coast is one of our favorite spots. (My son lives in Albany.) It is a beautiful state and has such variety.
