How many RNs are there on Dave's????

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Some of us were talking on the Brug Forum and we found there were so many RNs among Dave's gardeners. Also amazing was how many of us have more than 1 pet and even birds and we also loved decorating or collecting something old/antique. We must have the nurture gene in triplicate!

Can you post if you are an RN, what your specialty in nursing is, if you decorate or collect vintage and which pets you have? Just for fun!

I am not a nurse, and for a long time when I heard the word "nurse" I would first think of the doctor's office, hospital, and someone who sometimes was good at giving a shot and others that were not so good, some that were friendly, and some that were not so friendly........

Well, after spending three months in the hospital with our son, who was diagnosed with leukemia in 2002 I have a complete different outlook on them. They are the backbone of the hospital and if not for them, the hospital would not be in exsistance.

My son is an only child, and I have to admit he was spoiled before he ever got sick. It was not a bad spoil and everyone that I ever met said, "Shelby may be spoiled, but it is for certain a good spoil."

The nurses went out and above to take good care of him. If I was sleeping and if shelby wanted something and they were in the room they would go get it for him, and not let him wake me up. His nick name became Mr. Shelby, and everyone addressed with that.

If he wanted someone to talk, besides myself, his dad or girlfriend, they would make the time. They told him, "Shelby, I have to go give someone a shot or give medicine and I will be right back, and they were!"

When shelby was finally released after Thanksgiving of that year they told him we have you down for the Staff Xmas Party, and yes, Shelby did attend. Again they went out and above and made him feel as though he was one of their families.

Two of the nurses at the time he was there were going to have babies, and before Shelby was released for the last time. He made his now wife go buy baby gifts for them.

So to all the nurses here at DG, I salute you to a job well done, and all I can say THANK GOD FOR NURSES. I don't know what we would do with out them. They get yelled at, spoke terrible at, and they understand. They give all they can give and more.

Thanks to all of you for what you do, and what you stand for.

Kell,
I am an RN. I have two dogs and one kitty. Would be GLAD to post pics. I don't really collect anything in particular. I do love antiques. I think that is because I am becoming an antique myself.
I work in a REALLY small hospital on the Ky/Tn border. We know most everyone that walks in the door so it is easier to know what is normal and not normal for them. It just makes it harder to lose one because you do become so attached. I work on the med/surg floor of the hospital. I have been there for 14 years. Sheesh! My feet hurt! Now surely we aren't the only nurses here. Lets hear from the LPN's as well. I couldn't make it through the day without the hard work of mine.

Though I'm not a nurse, I do work in a hospital. I'm a lab assistant in the microbiology dept. Sort of a distant cousin to you nurses! Kell, those flowers are beautiful!

Nap, that is a very important position as well. In our hospital we all work together. That is the one thing I love about it the most. We don't say you are an RN so you do this and you are the LPN and you do this. We work as a team. If we didn't, I don't think we would ever make it sometimes. Hospital work is hard, no matter what department you are in. It takes all of us.
I want to know what both of those flowers are. Beautiful!

Oh Annie, what an ordeal for your family. I am glad to hear Shelby is now married!

Lets see your kitty and dog Janet! I bet they are adorable!

Candela, I was just looking longingly at an old oak plant stand. They wanted $325!! It was great though. What kinds do you have? What a great thing to collect.

I have worked in so many different hospital units over the years. My first job was as a neurosurgical ICU nurse at Childrens in Boston. My last hospital job was Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology at a small hospital in California. Then I had my own baby and raised him for 6 years till I went back and ran a dermatology and allergy clinic. I sold out to the good hours and no weekends and no holidays!!

a friend of mine just moved out to california to work as a nurse for the indain health services and just loves it. telemetry is so tough. the ratios are always bad. i heard california has mandatory rn patient ratios is that true.

We can agree on that, jen. And also on how gorgeous those flower shots are. Please tell us what they are.

In a year I will be an RN (if everything goes as planned)! The school, work, wife, and Mom roles make it tough. I work on a Med Surg floor as a tech right now. I don't know where I want to end up yet. I share a cat and dog with my daughter. I'm not much into collecting these days. I do have a few pieces of antique furniture that I refurbished. It takes more time, effort, and money than I have anymore. I'm happy admiring other's collections.

Hi Just a paramedic of 20 years with 2 daughters who are med-surg nurses A CNA and a director of hospice daughter. Have 1 Corgi named Corky and 14 cats.

Mayfield, KY(Zone 7b)

14 cats! Wow. That must be a record. You need to let the pet forum know about them. Some real cat lovers there. I guess that would be easier than 2 cats and 14 daughters. LOL

markleysburg, PA(Zone 5a)

Only 5 daughters and 5 sons but all the cats are fixed and in a very large barn where they are content. I was raised alone so I like crowds Shirley

Mayfield, KY(Zone 7b)

Aww how nice to have so many children. Makes the holidays so exciting.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Good luck to you, Nmax! It is great you have gone back to school. I couldn't! Not enough brain left.

Cass, yes there are mandatory minimums but they must not work that great for when I interview for RNs they come in complaining so of their hospital loads.

Marclay...14 cats! WOW. I thought I had too many at 4. But double WOW to 10 kids. You must have a big house and a huge heart.

After being out of school for 30+ years I went back after son was done with his chemo in 2003. I took Medical terminology/Transcription, and loved it, but unless you've had several years experience, good jobs around here are very hard to find.

I found a job with an agency for the care of people with learning disabilities/in group homes. I love my job, and when our son moved to Green Bay, I had empty nest syndrome so bad......not anymore I've aquired 8 more! To me it is very rewarding job, and will probably be with the agency till retirement.

Although I'm a dog person, and we've always had at least one cat. In 1997,Tabby, our 20 year old cat was too tired and we had to put her to sleep, I said no more pets. We still had Ginger our collie, and Butch our yellow lab. I gave Butch a shot twice a day for three years, being a diabetic he just couldn't go any more and we had him put to sleep in 2000. Then before I knew it Lemeau came along, a black cat with just a little white under his chin. Well, couldn't let the poor thing starve to death, and the rest is history. Then came Goldie, but my son took this one, a orange tabby with extra toes on each foot. Then Shelby was diagnosed and we took Goldie to our home. In the mean time someone shot Lemeau and the vet amputated the leg to the shoulder. Six weeks after that Goldie had kidney stones removed. ( my vet loves me, and I know for a fact I own at least one of the chairs in the waiting room.)

Time passed, and the Twins came along. The nurse across the street that worked at the prison brought us 2 tabbies, greay white and black. One had long hair and one had short hair. She kept the two males and we took the females. We named them Pauline and Geraldine. Then Pest came along, a tortie, and a pest she is. Sometimes I think she thinks her name is "you better run." I was afraid the twins would beat her up. But after introducing her to the others, one day, while sitting in the tv room, all of a sudden the twins came running down the steps from upstairs and Pest was chasing them! lOL

Then Pinky came along. A little black feral that showed up, not more than 4 weeks old. We set up a heat lamp with food and water and then in the spring won her love and captured her. To this day she still will fuss when we pick her up but she is quite the character. Then we were blessed with a Mamma cat that gave us 5 babies.

Ginger the collie was 17 when she just couldn't go anymore, and we put her to sleep, such a hard thing to do, but she had a good life, and was loved very much.

Now no one wants cats around here, and I often wonder how many other cats have been shot. All the cats are fixed and oh yes, the babies names are Clara, Eddie, Dorothy, Delores, and Bobbie. They all have different personalities, and are are loved very much. I've always said," if they are going to live on this property, they must be fixed!

The last time I put up a tree all of them just loved it, but only lights were put on. The only tree I put up now is the miniture one, because cats+decorations+ trees are a disaster waiting to happen at this house! LOL

What a nice story, Annie. Thanks for letting us hear it.

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

I am not a nurse, but it is great if they can have time to garden and care for their own pets and family. It seems like they are all so overworked.
I have never met a Nurse that wasn't cheerful or helpful when I had a relative in the hospital.

Mayfield, KY(Zone 7b)

That is so nice of you to say Windy. It isn't always easy but people with your attitude sure make our jobs more enjoyable.
