My suggestion about the neighbors is to let the hunter-friends know the property
boundaries and where they can hunt and where they can't. And w/o getting them
PO'd at you. I guess I'm a little paranoid but I sure would hate to have folks w/guns
mad at me, especially if I didn't know them! (I have a number of friends & colleagues
from work that hunt and they are terrific people. I certainly don't mean to say I think
all hunters are nuts. But there are nuts in every crowd.)
Thanks
Tam
Our new home!!
Thats what i'm thinking, they are the ones with the loaded guns, lol.
I am not anti-hunting by any means. I'm sure in a few years i'll be whooping with joy when i hear shots, especially after the flower beds are grazed.
We have guns in the house, but when we first moved here we all agreed that there would be no hunting on the land. Guess i didnt take in to consideration the other people that were in on that conversation, lol.
I've wondered all day where the happy medium is in this, but i cant seem to find it. There just isnt enough room around us for people to be hunting back there. Its not exactly a subdivision, but there are people and livestock.
Who knows, maybe the guy i spoke to went back to his friends house and informed him of our talk. Maybe, just maybe, they'll respect that and there wont be a problem?? I can hope, eh?
Its funny how i didnt think there was a problem until we walked the lines and realized how far back we went. I had no idea that we owned pert near to the other road.
Michele, i've been looking online for a fluorescent sports bra for you, but can't find one, lol. Maybe a fluorescent bandana?
I'm thinking that here the orange garb won't be a prob. w/ tan lines.
It's a bit cool for bra and shorts.
Unless your Polar Bear'ering it.
Then just forget the bra and shorts.
The blinding white glare............lol!
Hunter Orange knit and baseball caps are everywhere this time of year.
That should be enough.
An Orange Dayglow collar is a must for the dogs though.
Jen I'd say your place was a boys club for quite a while.
Now that someones living there and using the land it should stop in quick order.
I'd put a sign by the front road entrance.
Just state "NO Hunting! Don't bother asking."
I see those all over around here.
I'm guessing you'll also find people snowmobiling and ATV'ing/Off-roading there too.
Might just as well nip it all now.
It would though be nice to see cross country skiers there.
Generally they are land friendly and quite pleasant people.
Ric
Ric - you are right about the ATV & snowmobiler's. My place drops off
very quickly on the road side. We've got an old dry-stack stone wall
about ten feet from the road (maybe 4-5' tall). One year I saw a snowmobile
track along the road, go onto our property and then fly off the stone wall.
Fortunately it wasn't very tall where they "fell" off. With the snow pretty deep,
it was very hard to see the wall I'm sure. Scares me that someone could
get hurt someday!
We're too steep for crosscountry skiers ... but its a great sledding property.
A friend of our's son was killed snow mobiling around a Bank Barn.
Cut it a bit too close and hit the rock wall supporting the barn entrance ramp.
I luv winter hiking. I think the woods there will be great for it there Jen.
Also luv snow mobiling but on trails made for it in isolated areas.
We've been to Michigan and done it on lakes there.
65 MPH on ice!
WOW what a rush!
Ric
now i'm thinking i need to put marking tape on the fence so they dont crash in to it.
i thought country living was supposed to be peaceful, lol.
we had a blast exploring the woods!! I found 2 old milk, grr, what are they called? jugs? buckets?....the big old metal ones that have the handles on either side? bill laughs at me because i always call them the wrong thing. : ) we found 3 or 4 trash piles back there that will be needing attention come spring, i can only imagine the treasure i'll find. this was an old dairy farm and i'm thinking the woods were the dumping ground after the cows were sold off.
I may be able to give your trash pile a run as well! LOL I think we bought the twin properties states apart! Let's see, I have rolls of fencing, 2 washers, sheet metal, car tires, tractor tires painted green and white from gardens long gone, a huge satellite dish and who knows what are under those?!?! Oh, I nearly forgot the assortment of beer and pop cans. I know why the previous owner was way off on the price of garbage pick up. He had never paid for it! LOL
Jen, after reading the Christmas post, I had to go and look at the work duds you wanted. Might I say those come in some lovely shades of soil. :) Finding lipstick should not be an issue. LOL Hubby and I were looking at boots as well.
Maybe we can paint big smiley faces on the backs of the barns? A smiley face with a rifle? A giant stop sign??? I wonder how long it would take me to put up fencing and paint it hot pink? :)
Lucky you that you got a satellite dish!! Someone from here, i think auntea's husband used an old mesh satellite dish, turned it upside down, put it on pilings and gave her an instant gazebo....it was incredible when the flowers were in bloom!!
yeah, i already looked, carhartts dont come in girlie colors : ( so i'll have to accesories with girlie stuff, lol
i had on bills when i did the snow angel and once i was on the ground i felt like a sumo wrestler and i'm quite sure i looked like one trying to get up, lol. Good thing we live in the country, eh?
You know, painted the fence is a half bad idea!! (being serious) I wonder if its waterproof? It may not stay on the fencing itself, but i bet it would on the wood? Hmmm, i can see it now, lol.
Lucky for me, i didnt see any washing machines, but i did see an old lawnmower, 2 rolls of fenching, old barb wire, ..wouldnt it be cool if i actually found antique farm stuff? i could put it in the front yard and use it along with the tractor tires, lmao.
You pick, are you Paris or Nicole, lol
ROTFLMBO Welllll, supposedly Paris is thought to be the more sexy of the two but she is such a um...is bimbo acceptable? LOL I better go with Nichole. :)
I remember seeing a pic with a satellite dish as a gazebo and when I first saw it back there, that was my first thought! The kids said it is broken but hubby said he thinks it is still in good shape. I want to get back there now that the grass/weeds are dying down and check it out. The guy that brush hogged for me didn't do there because the spot is a bit tight and fenced on three sides and of course he was on a BIG tractor and there is that pile of....stuff back there. I mean come on, I am going to *need* some tacky yard art! LOL I only have one piece right now. At my old house our doctor lived across the street. He is getting his house ready to sell as well and his girlfriend had one heck of a good time tossing out his 20 year collection of stuff. One thing she tossed out is the base to a table. It is two owls on a tree stump and the whole thing is white except their eyes which are orange. It is freaky and neat at the same time. I asked him what it was and he told me it had been a table his mother bought him and he never had the heart to tell her he broke it. He told me to take it. I didn't at first but then did later. A few days later I told him it was in front of my pond and told him I would send him a picture. He was delighted that I saved it from the trash. LOL
As far as painting the fence...I really have a thing for those long meandering white horse fences. For a laugh, I priced the pvc ones. OUCH! To do 800 linear feet of it with the three board style, I would be looking at $4400 BEFORE delivery and taxes are added. Four board fencing is about a buck more per foot. Might I mention how good cattle fencing is looking? LOL
I just came in from watching my eldest daughter get on the bus. I caught something out of the corner of my eye. Then I realized it was four somethings. As soon as I figured out they were deer, they turned and I could see their white rumps. I had my daughter laughing as I whispered "Run. Go the other way. They have guns back there.". LOL Then I had to hope they wouldn't get hit by a car or bus that would be approaching any second. They turned and went back across the street. It is so nice and quiet out here.
I just put up fencing around my shrubs this weekend. Michele - I'mnot sure you'll be
whispering "Run. Go the other way" after they've mowed down all your new shrubs
and perennials! I'm whispering "Run. Go towards those nice orange men with sticks".
LOL Tammy! So far they have stomped through a couple of beds but not eaten anything. I did say so far. :) I am sure I will be cussing them one day in the near future. It was nice to have a chuckle in the dark with my 12 year old. I have nothing against hunters but I am just not one for killing things. I darn near killed a line of people to miss an opossum the other night. LOL
I met a lady in town a few weeks ago because she hit the biggest deer in this neck of the woods. I stopped to see if she was okay. Her SUV was totalled. The darn thing was still alive under her car lifting it! I had to laugh when she told me later the hunter that shot and took the animal was upset because part of an antler was missing. Everyone in town was on the lookout for this guy as a trophy I suppose.
I've been pondering the idea of learning to use a bow an arrow because I don't like guns. I wasn't any good at archery in school for that whole week we got to try. At least they don't make loud noise when fired. :)
Chele,
I can't even pull back my husband's bow! They ate my roses and scupernogs at my old house. I'd sit there and watch them though. Too pretty and magical to me I guess. You can pick up a deer off the side of the road still breathing every morning on my way to work. Makes me want to bring a gun so I can put them out of their poor misery. An arrow would not be quick enough. I don't have anything against hunters, I just hate to see them sitting in the road, unable to get up but head's up.....very upsetting. I wish they wouldn't insist on darting out in front of cars and trucks. But that's life I guess eh?
I agree with henry up above saying that your land probably was sort of a hunting club, and now the hunters just need to know it's NOT. Legally you should follow the DEC posting rules, but if the hunters have particular entry points it wouldn't hurt to put a sign that says something like "No Hunting. We have children, dogs and horses that use this property". You are probably right that they are respecting your wishes now that they know them. Although you don't know your neighbors yet, in a small town people usually do try to get along. It's kind of embarrassing to be feuding with someone who you'll see several times a day at the store, hardware store, post office, church, etc.. Or whose kids will be friends with your kids.
ANyway, I'm sure hoping they're changing their ways!! We have an unmaintained 110 acres parcel that I TRIED to post. Then people ripped down the signs I did get up. SO we went in and found some treestands and removed the floors, and put posted signs right on the rest of them. I posted all the entry trails. I'm not keeping up with it though since it's a jointly owned property with sibs and they don't bother.
Jenks, you sound as bad as my 10 year old. LOL If I would do it, she would have me pick up every dead animal on the side of the road and bury it. We are on the road a lot now between this house and our other house and there are lots of sad "oh" and "awe" coming from her with every body on the road. We are especially sensitive to it at the moment since our dog was killed the night before Thanksgiving. The kids accidentally let her out. She was only out for about ten minutes and I was after her as soon as she took off. Only one car came down the road. It was not hard to figure out that car killed her. They didn't even stop. She was jet black with a hot pink collar and there is no way they didn't know they hit her. I am very thankful for the second car on the road beside mine. The man stopped and helped me put her in the car so I could bring her home to bury her. In a matter of minutes, I saw the good and bad of humans. It does not help that we live on a road with a speed limit of 55mph. That means some are going 75-80. :( Anyway, I don't want to be a thread killer. What is done, IS done. It just seemed relevant.
It is only supposed to get to 48 today as opposed to the 68 we had yesterday. I was able to get the pond filled at the old house yesterday and tilled over. I am trying to decide whether to work here today or there. Always so much to do and we don't even have critters yet.
So Farmer Jen, what are your plans? LOL
{{{{{{{Chele}}}}}}}
I'm SO sorry to hear that.
She was a dear sweet pain in the butt.
I'll miss her bugging me.
Tell the kids we both send our sorrow.
Ric
Here Jen, we are going shopping!!!

Is there a TSC store near you ? We have one here. Lots of good things & some of the best prices.
Carhart clothes are another brand name getting your hard earned money. I worked construction in winter, when we needed heavy coveralls & coats. Other brands are just as good & 1/3 to 1/2 the money. Do some shopping unless you must have thee brand. I'm sure they laugh all the way to the bank!
Have a Great Day!
Bernie
I wonder if mens coveralls look as good on women as they do men? do you reckon they make them with tapered legs and bust darts? lmao
drives me batty thinking about the stuff that i'm going to need for the winter. one trip to the barn will require more clothing in a day than i wore during an entire winter season in MS. Does that make sense, lol
Nicole, thought for sure you'd be Paris because of the blonde hair : ). I've got the ditz part down pat, just dont have the hair for it, lol
Funny thing about winters up north, 50º in October is cold, in January it's a heat wave!
I've seen some gals in coveralls that looked great, then there are others, oh my!!
Bernie
LOL Bernie! I am close to at least two TSC stores. I have such fun in those stores! If I had money I would be dangerous! I have not invested in any designer work wear or any at all yet. Jen wanted some Carhartt for Christmas. :) I am happy to take her on a virtual shopping trip.
Whoops! Ran out to watch the kids get on the bus and lagged in hitting the send button. :)
Me putting on coveralls oughta be about as attractive as dressing your hog in them. LOL When I was younger, I wanted a figure like Dolly Parton. Problem is even when you get it, really bad things happen when you keep the shape but it gets bigger and bigger. ROTFLOL I think I would fall into the OH MY category. :P
It is snowing here again. I have to go cut the metal "trunk" off the little Christmas tree I put out front. First it kept falling over so I weighted the stand with some nice big rocks. Those 45 mph winds came through here day before yesterday and bent the darn thing. LOL
R33, thats what i'm talking about, lol....and ohhhhhh i have my choice of colors..black or bark.....bark, what kinda word is that for color description? they could've put tan, khaki, suedalicious, you know something more festive than "bark"....i say "barf", lol I wonder when men put them on if they wonder "hmm, does my shirt match?"..does red go with bark?
the biggest drawback right now is trying to get the finances figured out. we still havent settled with insurance and fema denied us. the creditors are starting to call and slowly what we worked so hard to achieve is crumbling around us. don't know what else to do tho.
bernie, yup we got a tractor supply store, and apparently they think women dont know what they're in there for. i was looking for something, dont remember, and i must have looked confused because a rep came up and asked if i needed some help...told him what i was looking for and he proceeded to take me up and down every aisle.....he was just as confused as me, i knew what i wanted, just didnt know where to find it....i hate people that think that just because were women, we dont belong in hardware stores or parts stores. after we finally found it, (i remember now, a sledgehammer), he started looking at railroad pics, shovels, etc...just kinda rolled my eyes and went to what i needed..he was *still* looking at rack when i told him "thanks for your help"
Bernie,
I bet they look like sumo wrestlers, dont they, lol
MSJen~"Suedelicious"?? Do call Carhartt and ask them to add that color!! LOL!!Or we could have a petition to rename the colors?
I love the old time tack and hardware stores which have owners on staff - they know every nut and bolt in the place. I never find a "helper" who knows his or her way around. I bought a gate and stock tank, along with other items, and there were two girls on registers who looked to be about 18. They said there was no one to help lift the items into my truck, and looked pretty lost about how I should get the items in. I wrestled them myself, in the rain. I assumed there would be someone out in the yard to help at least - I'm not asking them to do it for me. But then I figured I was a good role model for the girls. I refer to myself as the fat suburban housewife when I take on jobs that the guys won't even touch. I don't believe that helplessness is going to get anyone anywhere!!
back home at our feed store, you didnt buy 1 bag of feed and load it yourself.....1, 2 or 100, the warehouse loaded it.
my last trip to ts i bought 10 bags of sweet 10. well since they didnt have customer rules posted, i did what i thought was logical and stood in line empty handed. when my turn came the convo went something like this:
Me: Hi, how are you?
her: no reply
Me: hmm, okay then ,i need 10 bags of sweet 10
h: huh?
M: you know, sweet 10, the horse feed
h: oh...(she looks kinda puzzled), but you dont have any for me to ring up. you have to bring it up and the carts are over there (flipping her arm to point out the general direction)
m: okaaaayyyyy
just then the manager walked by and i politely asked him if he could help, well come to find out they do have a loading dock, but they dont like to use it, especially when its cold and rainy. he showed her were the barcode was in the book....then i really confused her and asked for 10 bags of shavings, lol
i think i'd much prefer to pay a little extra to support the feed store here in dansville rather than drive 20 miles to buy from a larger chain that has no customer service skills.
oh, and then there was the time, same store, that i needed to buy 2 hay racks.....same sledgehammer dude. Finally got it out of him that the racks were outside, we walked out and found them, 3, well i only needed 2, so I tried pulling them apart while beezlebub watched. I finally got them apart, only to find out they were bent, which i'm not surpised considered how much foot and arm pressure i had to use. He *never* lifted a finger to help. Sad, eh?
Must be the managment there. Our TSC store have very friendly, knowledgeable people. Then go out of their way to help, almost to helpful sometimes. We used to have rabbits. When i bought feed for them, if more than 1 bag someone always put it on the cart & took it to my truck & loaded it.
I would look up the manager, introduce yourself & COMPLAIN about the service. If that don't work , go to their website & lodge a complaint. I'm sure TCS would be interested. A poor customer service probably means a lowreturn store.
I agree that it is nice to patronize a local feed store. If it's a Co-op you will get a dividned at the end of the year.
Bernie
Bill loves going to TSC. They fall all over him when he walks in, guess because he's spent alot of money in there? Dont they realize that I"M the one that controls the checkbook, lol
Bernie~ the people in your area are probably more knowledgeable overall. TSC is just hiring from the local community, and here it's younger folk who I'm sure have never been on a farm, and don't seem to care. There are plenty of jobs, and few farm or animal oriented folk, and that's the pool the employees are drawn from. I think they're friendly, just clueless that they're not working in a card store! Same goes for Home Depot. When it opened it was great - now they seem to have switched over to mostly disinterested people who wave vaguely when you ask where you would find something. I just don't go there. Vote with your dollars!
When you're dealing with a family and locally owned business, you usually have people who are invested in their products.
Jen, I can't believe you were supposed to push 1/4 ton of feed around the store in a cart!! I hope they have heavy duty carts!!
Co ops are a great idea. I should look into forming or joining one!!
Guess you could always cut a bag open, poouuurrr out the Sweet10 and tell her to scan off the empty bag.
Oh yeah and by the way there's a clean-up in Aisle 6............
Ric
ROTFLOL Ric!! I LOVE it!!
LOL Ric!
Our store has been here a long time, although they moved to a new building a couple years ago. I've lived in this area for 20+ years, some of the TSC people have worked there the whole time.
Our Home Depot was a parking lot for Menards on Friday. They are about 2 blocks apart. Seems Menards had better deals than HD.
HD here is a joke. Menards out does them on everything. HD sometimes prices things 1¢ less than Menards. Who cares ? Menards here is another store thats been here a long time & so have lots of employees. Many are over 20 yrs.
http://www.menards.com/
Check it out here. They are expanding so maybe a store will be by you soon.
Bernie
I bet the first time i accidentally on purpose knocked over one of the displays they'd offer to load it at the loading dock, lol.
I can just see me "Oooppps" lol
Bernie
Tractor supply is really new around us. They opened a few stores in the area less than 3 years ago. That might explain why yours has knowledgeable people. Although ours might get strangled before they learn where stuff is!!
There is one near us our vet recommended as one place to get the wheat bran at during the colic episode. We went to our old reliable Boss Brother's, but I love to check out new feed and tack places. None are real close except the one down the street that sold me half a load of seedy, late cut hay and half decent hay. I'll never go back to it, despite the fact I'd really come to like the ladies that run the place. I saw them picking and choosing what to stack on the truck.......red flag went up and I should've stopped them and asked, but I didn't realize how bad it was until I got it out of the bed. Now I don't know what to do with it. I was going to use it for bedding.....
We've got an old-style Agway here. Most have either closed or turned
into yuppie shops (lawn furnature and pots, no feed or rural stuff). I
buy EVERYTHING I can at that Agway in the hope that stay in business.
They sell all sorts of birds, feed etc etc. A new TSC opened not too far
from them so I'm really pulling for Agway.
And as to being female & buying "guy-stuff"... when I bought my little farm,
I started searching for a tractor. Since I never was on a tractor and knew
nothing about them I was a bit green LOL. Anyway - I found an ad for
a used Kubota 21HP B-series tractor that sounded good. My DH came
with me to look at it but the sales guy kept talking to him. So DH walked
away (so the sales guy would talk to ME since I was buying it). A little
later I "borrowed" my friends husband since he knew a lot more about
tractors to get an informed opinion on it. He was buddies with the guys
at that shop. After I bought it, he told me that my DH & I had caused quite
a stir! Imagine the MAN walking away and leaving his little woman to
deal with such a big decision! Now I always go by myself. Less distracting
than having a hunky husband on my arm LOL
WOW!
Jen, i just love your place, it IS breathtaking!!!
Hugs to you. Please call again soon...
[got my co puter back up!!! uyippeee!]
tf
woohoo, TF, is back in da house : )
