Garden Party in Orange County

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Arlene,

Sorry I wasn't home when you called, had to babysit tonite. :-)
I will try to find a few moments tomorrow to sneak in a call to you about Sunday. Trying to figure out what to bring also. It looks like were having a Greek type luncheon...how about a Greek Salad, or give me something else to bring that would go with everything else, ok?

I have several Red Amarylis bulbs that I dug up last week, is anyone interested in some? I can bring about 7-8 large bulbs.

Donna

Valinda, CA(Zone 10a)

I have invited Ginny, a new Dave's Gardener to come along with us. She is going to bring a salad, she mentioned spinach and hard boiled eggs.

We are covered for food; just bring your lovely self

I would love a bulb or two from you. I realize that I have a healthy Cleradendrom Ugandense that I can share with someone; we will have to dig it.

looking forward to Sunday!

Settled on the sandwiches; so go to the first post to read about them.

One has a lot of garlic the other has a bit of heat to it.

hope everyone will like either one or the other.

Today is beautiful ~ no wind ~ hope tomorrow will be the same so we can enjoy the out of doors!

Hi Donna, Have a wonderful time. Had promised one of my daughter's that I'd drive her patio set over to her house that my neighbor gave her. She's only off on Sunday's...next time. Get lots of plants everybody!

What a rush! Meeting even more great DGers. However,
Princess Molly was worn out!

Oh, Ginny!
These are calling your name!

If you will email me your address, I will mail them to you.

Otherwise you won't get them back until January.

JasperDale has offered to have a garden party next; if he does it in January when I am here, I will bring them then.

Wow! Did I get set straight!
I had a Thunbergia Batascombi planted in the wrong place; JasperDale and Donna showed me where I should move it.

I also had a Clerendendon Ugandese planted in a place and it was giving my tropical hibiscus trouble. Donna took one home and I have already transplanted another into a large pot to put by the pool. It's really pouting but JaspDale assured me it will probably come out of it.

What would I do without you guys?

Thanks for all the great information!

In the foreground you can see the Ugandense overpowering my tropical hibiscus. I love the plant but can't be having it give my trop. hibiscus grief.

"spin" won the door prize; sorry I didn't take a picture of it; it was the most beautiful orchid - one yellow petal and the rest with brown stripes on it. I have never tried to grow orchids and found a wealth of info on them from our dear George!

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

Nice thing about hosting a garden party . . . .people bring you gifts! I did photo the gardener's hand soap but the pic didn't come out good. This picture is of the fresh flowers I received!

Thank-ya
Thank-ya!

I am the one with stripey's on me; then Donna (SoCal), Ginny, JasperDale, George & Sue

Edited to say, sorry . . . I know some asked not to have their pics posted and I may have goofed; please email me if it was anyone in this pic and I will see if Admin will remove it. Guess I got carried away.

Mike,
I learned Sooooo much from you. Thank-you for sharing so much cultural info . . . you helped me so much. And thank you so much for helping with clean-up. That made finishing up the day so much easier for me.

Valinda, CA(Zone 10a)

Arlene, thanks for a very fun day. Sue, Ginny, and I had a great time. It is so nice to meet fellow Dave's Gardeners.

Orange, CA(Zone 10b)

I had a wonderful time. It was great to meet and talk to everyone. The food was yummy, too.

Thank you, Arlene, for making it happen.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Stop it you guys, you're making me jealous! I'm glad you enjoyed your day, think of me yesterday, toiling in the shed putting up pegboard! And sweating too, it was hot!

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Sorry I haven't checked in yet. I crashed when I got home Sun. nite and yesterday was a very busy day and wasn't on DG for but a few minutes.

Arlene, thanks for the gathering of our little group. The food was awesome and I want that recipe for the chicken curry pitas, please. I also thank you for the big Cleodendrum you gave me. She is in a pot at this time, and looks a little sad from being dug up, but she'll be fine in no time.

It was so nice to meet 3 new people from DG, Ginny, Jasperdale and Quyen. Spin brought 2 guests with her...her step sister and hubby. It was so nice to meet them also.

I am off this morning to Knott's Berry Farm for a few hours today. They are having a special deal for Vets this week and we are taking my grandson, DD and SIL. I will post the few pictures I took soon.

Thanks again Arlene. Hope your enjoying this beautiful weather were having here in SoCal this week.

My children fly back in tomorrow so i decided I should take some time to post a few items.

George,
This is for you in case you need something to ID the "Misty Isle" hibiscus cutting I gave you.

A little blurry but good enough for Id

Found the tag for the Penta ~ STARS AND STRIPES ~ says the variegation is stable and that it is hardly ever without bloom; it is supposed to get 1.5 to 2 feet tall; if that is the case it has a ways to go as it is only about 8" tall right now. It appears to be doing well in full sun.

Blurry but this is the variegated bougainvillea "Double Delight". From Thailand, its is also supposed to be excellent for pots and hanging baskets; the bracts are supposed to be a two tone pale pink and white. ( I knew I would not have bought one that had those bright pink common colored flowers you see en masse all over SoCal. Right now I intend to keep it controlled as a ground cover.

Here is what the "Double Delight" flowers will look like.

Donna,
For ID, here is the Clerendendrom Ungandense you took home. The one I transplanted looks terrible but I trust Mike is right that it will come back. The first one I ever had came from Calla and then I was hooked on it. It didn't do well in Iowa but went crazy in CA.

Found the tag for that lovely lacy plant in the back yard. I think Mike was the one to ID it correctly. Shocked to find it was a vine but did read you can prune it back and keep as a bush but the foliage is so lovely, I think we will let it be a vine.

Pink Trumpet Vine Podranea brycei

Can take sun to shade, low water usage, blooms spring to fall; soft pink blooms veined in red.

Justicia brandegeana 'Variegata' Variegated Shrimp Plant

This one seems to be doing well in full sun and has been a prolific bloomer; I may prune it back a bit as it looks like it could get gangly

Justicia "Fruit Cocktail" seems to be more bushy than brandegeana.
The bracts are a lime-gold accented by bright red flowers.
Love this one!

The third Justicia:

Radiant ~ has bigger buds than the others and is truly "Randiant"

Here is the bud before it blooms . . .

Thumbnail by TwinLakesChef
OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

I think the buds are even beautiful; here is the whole plant getting ready to burst forth with bright pink flowers.

George, this is "Powder Puff" that you got a cutting of; this is the third day of its bloom so it is quite faded but in the first day you will appreciate much more the colors, shades of pink to white.

Sorry you missed it!
This hibisucs, "Cirlce of Love" bloomed the day after you were all here.

Donna and Mike,

You were curious about

Crossandr infundibuliformis 'Lutea' Firecracker Pland

Mine doesn't look as good as the picture in Logee's
East African native; supposed to get 1 - 3 feet tall; maybe by next year it will be there.

Although, not centered, this is a better picture for the color tones of "Circle of Love"

Now I will get back to work to be ready for the children to return; we are doing Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow night when they return. (guess they were too late to find turkey dinner in Canada LOL)

This is Jami Lou; bloomed yesterday; picture is a little dark.
