In several threads rabbit poop is mentioned as fertalizer for Brugs. How do you do it? Can it be used right away(from the animal) or does it have to be composted?
Whats the Poop on Rabbit poop?
I am one of the poop mentioners. LOLOL
I am no expert, I just play one on TV, hehehe, I just happened to get gabbing with a gal that took some pants I offered on freecycle & when she found out I was a gardener she said they raise llamas & rabbits & would I want a bag of their poo...HAR
The llama is dry & looks just like big coffee beans. The rabbit was much wetter & kind of gross. But I put a shovel full into a bucket & filled it with water and just let it steep for a few days. Then I used the poo tea to water my brugs. Often big chunks came out of the bucket and onto the top of the pots, so I called my mom who is the greenest thumbed person I know AND lives on a farm, and asked her if I should remove the chunks. She said no, cuz they had been in water and should not burn and that everytime I watered it would just fertilize a little more. She was right & I will tell you, my brugs have never looked so good. I am going to throw some llama beans in the pots for the winter, the gal I got it from said they would not burn & they are like time-released fertilizer. I have used the llama beans on a tree that I have in a pot, but I have not noticed any difference, but I really would not expect to on a tree, you know?
Once Spring is here again, it is right back to the rabbit tea. If you can gain access to some, I would highly recommend it. Maybe someone that has more experience will come along and tell you another method. :~)

donna, that is so awesome!
llama beans act like osmocote; rabbit doo is more like miracle-gro! wow!
If anyone is looking for me, I'll be out rabbit hunting! You guys are too funny.
Gee, all I need to do is find a Llama. LOL. A guy from here a while back, Root, swore by rabbit doo. He was a great gardener. Had incredible healthy plants, huge tropicals in Kansas!
i think i'll trade in my 2 golden retrievers for 2 llamas.
Personally I think the rabbit doo is the way to go even though it is grosser. And to be fair it was probably only gross cuz it was under her hutches & the sprinkler hit it keeping it "moist". barf.
I think the reason I liked the results so much was it was nearly instant gratification AND I don't have to do it again till the clumps are gone. LOL I may even try to dump more clumps next time & I may get another month out of it.
One cool thing she told me about the llamas, apparently they will choose a "bathroom location" and all the llamas in the gang (or whatever they are called) will use that location. She said that sometimes you will see them running full out from the back forty to use the bathroom. LOLOLOL When the bathroom gets too tall they will choose a new locale and start using that. I wonder who gets to choose the locale...oldest? tallest? meanest? And she said they ARE mean. Apparently they can KILL YOU! OMG! GO WITH THE RABBITS!!!! The worst they can do is beat you with their feet and bite you. LOLOLOL
Gosh, next time I see a llama I will know to run the other way!! I had no clue.
shhhh..I'm huntin wabbits..wasacally wabbits...

Elva, I have a good friend who raises Blk Angus cattle and used to go up to her place and get buckets of what she called "cooked for a year" manure. It did wonders for my plants and her gardens were unbelievably beautiful. She was always careful to warn me, though, not to apply it too heavily in case it was not quite "ready". Cow manure is a great natural fertilizer.
Now.. about potty training those wabbits...
Barb
Both rabblit and goat manures can be applied to the soil right away and will not burn the plants.
Thank you all. Ive got me a poo pile reserved at the Ag center of our High school. Yippy! I the poo I could ever want for free! No lamas though.
I used to raise and show rabbits and used the manure all the time. Rabbit manure is called "cold manure" and can be applied either fresh or composted without burning the plants.
I get rabbit and goat poo from a local farmer. He cleans out the pens and under the hutches and puts it in a big pile. I just take a shovel and some mulch bags and load up! I am finally seeing earthworms in my soil!
One more thing about rabbit poo, it doesn't have weed seeds like horse and cow poo.
So I don't have to make a tea! Wonderful news Cala! When I use processed ferts I just grab a handful and throw it in the pots, so can I safely use the same amount of Rabbit doo?
Boy that sound even better!!
Thanks Cala!
Would Guinea Pig poo work as well? She is a vegetarian. I've been snitching a few cups of her alfalfa pellets for tea too. :>)
Up until now, I've just been dumping everything from her cage into the compost bin. Shavings, poo and any uneaten food stuff.
edited because I forgot to spell check, and it was obvious!

Barb
Don't know about guinea pig poo, I'll have to ask my friend. Her son had a bunch of them.
We used to keep a pet rabbit at the greenhouse in TN. We would just dump his pellets(poo) right in pots of flowers(my personal flowers, not ones for sale. The customers were funny about stuff like that, lol). It never hurt them or burned them. Once a pellet got on a mum flower. A customer said "is this a mum seed?" and we almost died laughing!
"A mum seed"? OMGoodness! Too Funny!
When I was a kid and we took some dry rabbit poo to school in a little bottle, (Dont laugh ok.. we were just kids) and told the city kids that they were smart pills , only a couple took us up on trying one....that was over 40 years ago....lol
Elva, how do you think I got so smart?
oh, my!
Lol Kell.....They only reson I did it was my older brother did it to me.good thing I smelled it.yck !
That was mean of us..I know...It was for show and tell at school ....we got a good spanking when we got home .....
Even now tho when we are out walking that back 40 and I see dry rabbit poo ..I say oh look smart pills...LOl

remember rootdoctor, he love using rabbit doo ?
I think he used to layer it deep in his planting beds.
He had some of the most amazing brugs and tropicals growing in Kansas.
Elva, please send me some when you come across them! I find I am getting dumber by the day since I hit 50! I sure need a brain boost.
Lol Kell....
We also called sweet tarts (candy) smart pills..LOl
Hey 50 isnt old. I am pretty close to 60.....
I'm still around here,I have moved south,I do not have my puter up and running yet,so I get on a friends when I can,I am looking for someone down here that raises rabbits,I have a whole new yard to work on.
LOL Root! Did you see what I wrote about you above on Nov. 11th? When I wrote it I was remembering our great thread on rabbit doo way back when and the laughs we had. it. I often think of your great garden in Kansas. Down south nothing will hold you back!! I sure hope you get to visit us more often!
I will Kell,I should be back online soon!
Hey Rooty we miss you here at DG! Great to see you back on-line!!
I've never heard of using rabbit poo before. I love this idea. Maybe I can really talk DH into getting a bunny, I've always wanted one! If nothing else I'll just have to search the yard for droppings.
How often do you apply it to the plants? Can you use it on any plants? Is it best to bury it in the soil near the roots or is top dressing with it good enough? How much of it do you apply per plant?
My biggest question is....is this safe to use on veggies and food items? I don't see why it wouldn't be, since the bunnies get into the gardens and do their business there anyway, right?
I feel like I just hit a jackpot! Bunny poo! LOL Someone not far from me does have llamas. I'll have to find out what they do with their poo. Oh, that'll be an interesting phone call!
Thanks for the info!
Heather
Hi Heather,
From what everyone is saying you just scoop the poo right on top or you can make a tea (soak poo in water). Good luck with the lama lady down the way. I know the look you will get when you ask because I got the same look at the ag center when I asked for rabbit poo. " You want what..."???
LOL, yeah, I can see it now...can I have your poop please? Oh, pretty please?
I don't know how many llamas they have, or how much poo those animals make. I'll be waiting till spring to contact them. However, I'm going to start working on DH for a bunny now. Although, I'm starting to wonder about my zoning laws and how many animals I'm allowed to have? I need a farm!
I know people here that keep them in the house as a pet rather than a cat. They can even be box trained. Or even made into a gumbo!
Never in my house,(either way) but some do. Besides that you have Lamas down the street, what could they say!?
The llamas are about 7 miles down the street. Most of my neighbors don't have pets, and if they do they have one dog or cat. We have 3 dogs (just got a puppy last week) and 2 cats. I would need to keep a bunny inside, I couldn't make it stay out in the cold...and I'd never be able to eat it. It would be a pet. The more I think about it and the more I research it, I have no idea where I would keep a bunny in my house! They actually need a rather large cage, and I don't know if I want all that hay in the house...I think it might stink, or at least the other animals would get into it lots. They are adorable tho, and I guess pretty easy to litter train.
I had a bunny when I was a kid. We kept it outside and something killed it rather quickly. I don't want to go through that again.
I guess I'll have to find someone who has bunnies too.
Yea all the benifit with none of the hassle! What kind of pup did you get? I just got me a baby too. She is the sweetest little black lab. She is already spoiled! DH thinks Im a nut! He says she lives better than we do. And I say your point is????
Oh, a black lab, how sweet! We have a yellow lab mix. She's spoiled too...a bit on the pudgie side, LOL. Our pup is a Sheltie. His name is Baxter and he has his own thread here http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/558602/ if I did that right!
