Flag Etiquette

L.A. (Canoga Park), CA(Zone 10a)

I have three small (~ 16 in x 12 in) American flags. One is cloth and two are plastic. They are all faded and in some cases the sticks are broken. I'd like to get rid of them. Are they supposed to be burned like big flags or can I just throw them out?

Burlington, NC(Zone 7b)

Memory serves me that they should be burned - the flag or likeness of it comes under that rule.

I saw a flag yesterday that should be taken down from public display because it was in tatters. My thought when I saw that one - is to contact a local boy scout troop or someone like VFW/Military related group to use as an exercise in proper disposal protocols.

Just a suggestion,

So basically, you are saying that a flag is a flag and should be treated as such, even if it is small and plastic.

Northport, ME(Zone 5b)

The flag is a symbol. When it's not a good symbol anymore, a black plastic trash bag doesn't mean you are not patriotic. You have chosen new and brighter ways to show your patriotism. Some flags do get severe respect when worn out. The flag over the grange hall is tattered and gets lowered for the last time. You can ceremonially burn a flag or just replace it. Fly your brand new flag. If an old flag had special meanings for you, keep it safe. You don't have to burn it.

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

You can drop off any worn flags at an American Legion Hall or VFW. Once a year they will burn all those that they have collected. Just give them a call.

Vieques, PR(Zone 11)

I can remember when I was a small child, maybe 6, that I was at my grandparents house in South Charleston, WV.

The post office was 4 properties over from us.

I went in and demanded they take the flag down because it was pouring rain.

Initally they ignored me but I stood my ground.

The flag came down.

The american flag means as much to me as my relationship with my daughter and Lee.

The only reason we moved to Vieques out of all of the Caribbean islands was because it was part of the U.S.

I will go to my grave believing that the U.S. is great, one of the few free worlds there is.

Therefore, when one of my flags gets old, I replace it, but keep it.

I fly the following.

1. US Flag
2. PR Flag
3. Vieques Flag
4. Florida State Seminoles Flag

I think I have covered everything important.
