When you "choose" hardiness zone is it the average cold temps you shall go on, or is it the coldest it can get. I wrote after the coldest we can get but have gotten suspicous that it is wrong.

Hardiness Zone question
In the US, our zones are defined by the average minimum temperature. So it is an average of sorts, but for all intents and purposes, it's also the minimum temperature the area will receive in a normal winter.
Thanks Terry, Then I am on totally wrong hardy zone.

Here's a link; http://www.usna.usda.gov/Hardzone/hrdzon3.html
You should be able to figure out where you belong.
I am zone 4A & it can get to -30º here in winter, but not often. Most winters -10º to -20º is about right.
As far as plants go, we can get some Zone 5 things to live for a few years. If they are along the house foundation or mulched real good, they make it most winters. Even Zone 4 plants have a probelm some winters.

And then there is the Heat Zone Map.........for growing season temperatures. Some of us in the Midwest and plains areas have a better growing season for warm weather crops like corn, melons, and sweetpotatoes than higher hardiness zones in the northeastern and western costal areas.
when I go after our Hardy zones they dont at all match yours. I dont understand why it cant be a global thing, since we garden and love the same plants. all of us want to know the same thing when you are in the position to by a plant. how much "weather" can this plant stand...
One more thing, did "forget" that I have moved 206 miles 2 years ago, and that added two zones for the better :0))
Sweden is split in to 3 zones and they have only considoured it out of farmers point of view, It doesnt add up when you look at plants. But they have started to reevaluate what we can grow in our gardens instead as they have said (this can only be grown indoors)
Hey I have moved from a zone 3a to a 6a with the help of you :0)) My poor wallet... rotflol
