Canadian Postal Codes/Zone Inclusion

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

I can't say a plant grows here because it won't let me. Do I use Seattle or the border zip code or is there some way to add Canadian postal codes? I'm willing to help make it happen. Thanks.

Unfortunately, right now the system only allows for US zipcodes - BUT !!

Long ago I told everyone that if they ever found me a database with all the cities of the world, along with their latitude and longitude coordinates, then I'd be able to internationalize PlantFiles.

I found such a database a few weeks ago (I can't remember how I found it; maybe someone sent me the link) and therefore I can work on this. It might be a while, though!

Thanks Dave! I look forward to the Internationalization of PlantFiles. If you need assistance with the Canadian postal codes, just holler.

Can you say that 3 times fast?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Oh I wondered why my postal code didnt show up when I posted in plant files!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Dave, maybe you were thinking of the new ZIP code database you hunted for a couple weeks ago, due to the members whose ZIPs are not in the current one?

No, this is a completely different database - it's a database of the world rather than the US.

It has the lat and long of all the cities in the world.

Sounds great. I'm also willing to help if needed. But Canadian postal codes are more complicated and specific than US Zip codes in that they will narrow one down to a specific block on a street.

Sounds like a military database,lol.

I'd be willing to help with regards to Canada also; I own a mailing business and deal with postal codes all day, everyday.

Should I use the zip code for the border?

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

So I found a zipcode for the very small US landmass surrounded by water closest to Vancouver called Point Roberts 98281. Considering there isn't many people who live there and I can't add my postal code, I guess I'm going to use this one.

Dave, I'm really looking forward to seeing the PlantFiles "go global". Is this something you'll be looking at any time soon?

Tks,
Erynne

Yes, definitely!

I've been experienced only in US Zipcodes for so many years that it's still pretty new to me to support non-US addresses, but that is changing. With Go Gardening I learned a lot about international lat/lon coordinates and I will absolutely be applying that knowledge to each feature of DG that currently is limited to zipcode.

It's a big architectural change, however, so it will happen one piece at a time and I'll have to go slow so I don't break everything. :)

Thanks for the update! It will be of great use to see who has had good luck with certain plants in our own corners of the earth too!

Tks,
Erynne
